Chloe Sevigny, star of the Playtone-produced HBO drama Big Love, is tackling another project with the pay-cable network and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s production company, this time on the longform side.
HBO is developing Lizzie Borden, a four-hour miniseries about the infamous story of Lizzie Borden who, in 1893, was acquitted of murdering her overbearing father and step-mother with a hatchet, but was publically condemned. Sevigny, who has been the driving force behind the project, is set to star as Borden as well as co-executive produce. Because of her relationship with Playtone on Big Love, she took the project to Hanks and Goetzman, who are executive producing. Sevigny, repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment, also brought in writer Bryce Kass, who is in the midst of writing the script.
Sevigny, who plays sister wife Nicolette Grant on Big Love, is the second star from the departing polygamist drama to set a miniseries project with Playtone and HBO. A couple of years ago, Bill Paxton teamed with Hanks and Goetzman to turn the book Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy into a mini.

IMDB’d writer Bryce Kass. His profession is “Thanks” — because his only credit is a “Thanks” on an independent film. His other real credit must be “Friend of Tom Hanks”. Although that hasn’t done much for Peter Scolari (who’s now doing Erectile Disfunction radio commercials on XM). Well, at least Tom’s friend Bryce will get points to join the WGA and share in the health insurance for a year. And then Tom’ll hire Graham Yost or some real writer to actually do the work.
Oh, and don’t make the mistake I made the first time — I IMDB’d Bryce CASS (with a C) by mistake. I chuckled when I saw it was a 13-year-old actor kid. But when I looked up the Bryce KASS — I saw that he actually had fewer (meaning no) credits compared to the 13-year-old.
Oh, shut up. Who cares?!
I’ll go this way instead: it’s NICE to see an unknown writer get a shot like this — refreshing, even. Where does it say this person got the job for being friends with Tom Hanks? Do you know this to be true? Unless you do, shut your mouth and continue your downward spiral of jealousy, bitterness and (from the sound of it), unemployment.
And let us know when you get your shot so we can tell everyone you blew Ron Howard for it.
Extremely shallow and bitter comment, but then again, it is Deadline.
And BTW, Buffy, “Thanks” credits are mostly awarded to those who are important to the people making the project; in other words, important people deemed it important enough to thank this person, which carries its own cred, beeotch.
Ugh, does this story really need to be told?
Lizzie Borden took an axe.
And gave her mother 40 whacks.
And when she saw what she had done.
She gave her father forty one.
Sounds like a happy comedy doesn’t it.
Brilliant casting. She actually scares the crap out of me already on BIG LOVE.
Agreed. Chloe is arguably the most under-rated actress on television / cable — she’ll make a dynamite LB.
For the life of me I can’t figure out why Sevigny doesn’t have an armful of Emmy’s and SAG awards for her role on Big Love. She is sensational and has embodied this incredibly complex character. I’ve been looking forward to seeing what she would do now that the series is wrapping up.
how about the actor that plays her brother. he is brilliant. they’re both excellent.
But who can forget the creepy/fun 1975 ABC TV-Movie-of-the-Week version of The Legend of Lizzie Borden story starring Bewitched’s Elizabeth Ashley?!
It was Elizabeth Montgomery, and it was one of the best made-for-TV movies of the 70s. It’s going to be hard to improve on it.
Agreed, Donna. Scared the bejesus outta me as a kid.
I agree. that was a great performance & movie
And you all remember why it was great, dont you? I still remember her in that-wow!
Borden-philes are dancing in the streets…and, hopefully they find a kick ass director.
Now maybe whoever owns the rights to the Elizabeth Montgomery 70′s TV movie will release it on home video.
At last years SXSW, Chloe mentioned in an interview she did that she “would love” Bennett Miller (of Capote) to direct it. Whether that will come to fruition is anyone’s guess, but someone like that will be great.
The whole Lizzie Borden stuff went down maybe 15 minutes from where I live. Score for me or something?
Great story. Excellent casting. Just wondering why somebody would be so lame, as to post that well-known rhyme…
Gawd, why are so many commenters on this site such awful haters! If youve grown so cynical, maybe it’s time to move back to where you came from and consider a new career.
In the meantime, let me offer kudos to a young writer on his first big break. May it be the first of many successes!
To the loser who trashed Bryce Kass for not having any credits on IMDB — this is his bio, which lists some of the work he’s done.
Bryce Kass sold his Screenwriters Colony project, I’M COMING HOME, to Scott Free/Fox 2000. He recently completed an assignment for Scott Free entitled OCEANO and his latest original screenplay, FATALVILLE, is set up at Original Media with Charlie Corwin producing. He is currently at work on several new feature and television projects and continues to direct music videos and commercials.
So how’s your career going, Buffy?
Hanks is known for giving unknowns a chance. He’s probably the most ethical person in showbiz. I wish I could write a script for him.
Seconded. Hanks is a class act.
Very, very talented lady, and always compelling onscreen.
She’s a truly great actress, one of the best in her age bracket. I hope she becomes a major star by the time she hits 40.
does EVERYTHING that HBO makes have to go through tom hanks now?
Anyone else think of Kagney Linn Karter in that pic of Chloe?
I never caught on to Big Love but this miniseries sounds interesting.
I actually can’t wait to watch every minute of this new show coming to HBO. Hope it gets finished and ready to role on a tv near me and you soon, it’s the only reason I keep paying for that channel-so I can see what Chloe does with this character! She was why I loved Big Love so stinking much.
