UPDATED: It’s the end of the road for HBO’s psychiatry drama series In Treatment. And it isn’t. While there will be no fourth season of the half-hour drama series in its current form, it may continue on the pay cable network in a new incarnation. “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted,” HBO said in a statement. “However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.” What I glean from the carefully worded statement is that Dr. Paul Weston may not have held his last session. Because Gabriel Byrne’s character has been central to the show, it is conceivable that a potential In Treatment 2.0 would keep the series’ therapy theme and its main character, Dr. Paul Weston, while probably abandoning the setup of marathon sessions with a handful of patients each season.
This would not be the first time In Treatment has beat the odds; it did it once after its second 45-episode season. Back then, the series was almost pronounced dead after it ran out of source material (the Israeli show it was based on ran only for 2 seasons), its showrunner Warren Leight departed and star Byrne was vocal about the grueling demands of the role, which has him virtually in every scene, indicating that he may not be back. In the end, Byrne went back and HBO ordered a third season of the series with new showrunners, Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman.

Well, at least HBO has Boardwalk Empire and Treme which are two of the greatest shows on tv right now. Both became great toward the end of their seasons. And HBO has Game of Thrones coming up.
In Treatment is the only show on HBO that is grounded in a sense of reality. True Blood and Boardwalk are over the top in the extreme. Boardwalk seems to thrive on sadistic violence and True Blood on sadistic sex. Boardwalk also treats it characters (especially the female ones) with outright contempt. The writing for both Boardwalk and True Blood became increasingly phony as the season went on. Boardwalk has these fake monologues which cover for it’s inability to write a scene.
“cover for it’s inability to write”
Everyone is laughing at you.
The only thing that’s phony is you, troll. Your teeth falling out of your mouth in the retirement home? Perhaps your limited intelligence (“it’s inability to write”- seriously?) cannot enable you to understand how both the series can be historically accurate and thrilling, but hey that’s why you’re just a retirement home quack, while the literary press and critics have hailed Boardwalk as the best thing on television.
I guess they only get the New York Times and the New Yorker at the retirement home.
The NY Times and The New Yorker were nasty to BE. They didn’t get the show at all.
I don’t either but it’s nice to look at. They play it on mute at the rest home. All the porn shots keep us calm.
“how both the series can be historically accurate and thrilling…”
Limited intelligence? A misspelled word indicates inattention; a misplaced modifier indicates incapacity with the language. Seriously.
Thank you for your comment. I love IN Treatment I also hope it returns
I agree that HBO shows tend to use extremes in behavior as a replacement for plausible dramas with good writing.
I agree….In Treatment was fabulous. Made one think, for a change. I will NEVER understand WHY HBO and all channels treat the public as tho we have no brains to think. I am sick of all the sit-coms that treat men as tho they cannot think for themselves. No need to go on….nothing will change. I was very much hoping IN TREATMENT would return, but was sure it would not. Wow, I was right again.
I totally agree with you. This is why I loved this show. It spoke to the human in all of us, and not to the part of us thats voracious for nothing but sex and vampire sensationalism. The human side. The side thats never addressed in any show, ever, and perhaps since.
Well said! It’s a sad state of affairs when the only brilliant show CURRENTLY on HBO is over ten years old…The Sopranos.
We watch every night..enjoying Italian dinner..as if it were the first time watching…thanks to the incredible David Chase.
If it weren’t for the availability of this series (in chronological re-run as well as on demand)We’d cancel our subscription altogether.
HBO is aware of the huge cume and fanbase..perhaps it’s strategic in it’s 8pm EDT and 11pm EDT slots.
A resurfacing of In Treatment would be a a smart move as Boardwalk Empire’s writing has declined..becoming more violent in an obligatory manner..with gruesome close ups of guts and blood.
It cheapens the production.
This won’t be news to anybody who watched the show. The 3rd season ended with Byrne’s character walking away from psychiatry both as a patient and as a doctor, essentially bringing the whole premise of the show to a close. Any further attempt to extend the life of the series, after that, would seem really quite silly.
I hope no one reads this who is still planning on watching Season 3–say, when it’s released on DVD.
Yeah, but Blade had Whistler by suicide with a gunshot to the head, but he was back, you never know.
It would be a shame to lose Treatment. Boardwalk, Treme, Big Love — they all have their over-the-top melodramatic moments but Treatment was real, episode after episode. If the writers are spent, that’s one thing, but if they aren’t, I hope they’re back at it. Why not follow Amy Ryan’s practice for a while, with intermittent visits from Paul?
When I watch Boardwalk Empire occasionally I try to pretend it’s actually a graphic novel come to life so then the lack of character development works and the over the top story telling make sense. The show is perverse in it’s presentation anyway. All the characters in it seem unhinged and out of their minds. The world is so malecentric to the point of female annihilation like a comic book. It’s an awesome show to look at in terms of production design. Steve Buscemi is like a cartoon character come to life and same with the Michael Shannon. I agree with an earlier poster that the monologues are very overwrought as if they need to draw attention to themselves and not move the story forward. Of course maybe that’s the style of the show and viewers just need to get used to it.
The world was “male-centric” in “Boardwarlk Empire’s” time. The writers are showcasing the sexism of the era. I agree it’s disturbing, but it’s also a nice reminder of how far we’ve come.
As for “In Treatment,” I hate to think the show has really ended it’s run. A lot of great stories emerge in a shrinks office. They certainly do in mine.
That is a great idea, but I like Pauls character more. I will have to be in treatment if they don’t bring this back!
I feel “In Treatment” is an absolutely brilliant series and would to see HBO be able to pull off continuing it in any way possible.
I completely agree. Other than True Blood, which is more of a guilty pleasure, In Treatment is the show I can’t wait to watch every week. The characters are entirely compelling, the writing is top-notch. I can see a number of ways they could change the format, and keep us involved with these characters!
Totally agree! The incredibly brilliant writing and acting can certainly be re-tooled. It’s simply too good and too unique to just go away.
I eagerly await the Jib-Jab Flash Animated version.
It sounds like it may be time for a spin off. They could easily spin the show off featuring either Amy Ryan’s Adele character or Dianne West’s Gina character. Both were compelling characters and both actresses are both talented enough to lead a show like this. I just really hope this show comes back.
Well, there goes my free therapy. Not like the WGA pays for it.
In Treatment is a remarkable feat. Gabriel Bryne is amazing. HBO has never properly supported this show. Probably because they all desperately need therapy and are too arrogant to get any.
Everyone I know buys it on DVD or watches it on their DVR so they can see more than one episode at a time.
True Blood, Boardwalk, Entourage all lack courage and compassion. They celebrate flash over substance and calling attenton to themselves in a negative way. The wriitng for them was really weak.
In Treatment is a jewel of humanity. Sad that HBO is letting it go.
HBO used to mean quality, edgy, exciting programming, but now it simply has convinced it’s audience it still makes those kinds of shows while actually producing crap. HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA? Dullest “comedy” I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t even try to be funny, it just tries to be “cool” and “hip”. HUNG makes me sad when I’m supposed to smile. ENTOURAGE should have ended it’s run two seasons ago. BORED-WALK EMPIRE is a snoozefest. But it’s not all bad: BORED TO DEATH and CURB are winners. EAST BOUND too. But then… MILDRED PIERCE… ugh. What looks appealing about this? HBO should have kept TELL ME YOU LOVE ME from 2007, ended ENTOURAGE in 2009, it did a great job with BORED, EAST, and CURB, but should continue to have looked for actual comedies/dramas, not these weird shows that are neither.
HBO still has Treme around, which was surprising in it’s first season.
I will still never forgive them for killing Carnivale.
Hell, right now whatever has gone on with Starz, Showtime and others have tried to push out the drama.
I’m eagerly awaiting “Borgias”
Agree – Mildred Pierce is HORRIBLE
Flitty is right (for the most part), but TELL ME YOU LOVE ME went off because the creator didn’t know what to do with season 2. Really weird stuff… if anyone knows the story behind this, I’m curious…
Sorry, you’re wrong. Not a good program.
Ah, so this explains why the third season was so lame. Original showrunner left AND they ran out of source material. Didn’t really stand a chance, did it?
In Treatment was very good and I hope it continues as a more conventional drama, but it wasn’t exactly subtle because most of the time it spoke out what the viewer should have already seen. True Blood is one of the most original and entertaining series in TV. Deliciously trashy and over the top. I don’t care for wannabe snobs who can’t enjoy both aspects of entertainment and feel the need to always pronounce that they only watch Mad Men or Treme and that all other TV is crap.
While True Blood is extremely fun and the viewership flagship Boardwalk Empire is HBO’s standard bearer. It didn’t win over Mad Men because the Globes like movie stars and new shiny things. It won because it’s better in most aspects than Weiners well written, but incredibly ovverated and oh so pretentious little primetime soap. Boardwalk = Best ensemble cast, best dialogues and best directing in all of TV. (Of course there are a few similar great shows on other channels like Breaking Bad, Lights Out or Sons of Anarchy).
The rest of the HBO shows (from Curb to Hung or Treme) are all good to great. With Game of Thrones and Luck coming they are back on the Throne.
Their new format should be one hour per week – either Paul should see three patients in 15 minute segments, then see his own therapist for the last 15 or lead group therapy for 30 minutes and see his therapist for the second 30. Excellent show – Gabriel Byrne is a wonderful lead actor who makes all the other actors shine.
Inside info: HBO used to be awesome. The only two shows that are in development there that are anything remotely daring and old school GOOD hbo are the Molly Shannon NUN show and Mark Wahlberg’s Starfuckers show.
I really loved how this show was so logical and how the payoff for following its logical sequence of uncovery and discovery made each episode’s closing act that much more poignant. Greek tragedy is like that; nothing random even if it seems so at first glance. We live in such bizarre times when we have available to us some of the best shows ever seen on TV as well as some of the worst. I only wished Angelina Jolie could have returned to HBO for a stint on this brilliant show…sigh…
Gabriel Byrne is brilliant!!!! I believe changing the format could be a wonderful idea. It got to be too many talking heads, too cerebral. Now there is a chance to show a bigger picture of their lives. It will probably be more successful than before!
The first season was great… The 2nd season, the sessions were good, but I think not having a strong romantic element hurt it a lot.
Hard to see how grueling the show can be on an actor when 99% of the shoot is on two sets. Sounds more like contract positioning.
It must be really gruelling. 28 episodes in the third series, each one 25 mins. That’s the equivalent of just under 8 standard length movies. Byrne is in every scene. As two handers the actual acting process would be very intense, not only technically but with the subject matter involved, emotionally too. An average shoot probably starting very early and lasting at least 12 hours. Bearing in mind the first season was 43 episodes and the second season 40 I think the word gruelling probably describes very accurately how Byrne must’ve thought about the show. Perhaps if there was a contractual angle it may have been the reduction of the amount of episodes in series three.
I will really miss In Treatment, which I stumbled across in mid-season 3. I went back and watched all of Seasons 1 and two via Netflix and enjoyed this quiet high-quality series a great deal! Great acting, great stories, great characters and great concept that we loved. (I also agree with another prior post that briefly mentions the Carnivale series, another television offering that was probably doomed because of it’s unique storylines and characters.)
I really loved this show and would love to see it in whatever form. The writing and characters are rich and changing just as real people, no phony or cheesey stuff. No need to make noise every second of air time. Characters get a chance to reflect, make changes or totally mess things up. The question of Amy Ryan’s character was never resolved. What was she thinking. Was Paul wrong in his hopes about her? I will hope for its revitalization.
Can’t believe HBO won’t bring back In Treatment. The only show with substance and real characters. I’d love to follow some of the characters as they move on in life. Finally a real show and not a reality show and HBO is letting it go. Hey HBO go see Dr Weston
In Treatment was one of the finest HBO offerings ever! I would love to see it come back, in any format. Also agree that axing Carnivale was a huge mistake. I also enjoyed John From Cincinnati! Treme is amazing ……… HBO rocks!
“In Treatment” is the reason I subscribe to HBO! What a shame that such a top-notch show might get axed… Truly, truly a sad day for those of us that recognize what a rare gem it is. Sad for those that might have started watching it finally.
so disappointed in HBO for canceling In Treatment. I loved the show and looked so forward to another season. I hope they reconsider, as it truly was top notch acting and content. What is considered great by today’s standards of television? Dancing With the Stars???
Yet another network cancels one of the most riveting, rich and engaging shows to bless modern television… There are few shows that can makes its viewers squirm in their seats and confront them with insights into their own psyches as well as those of others.
“Yet another network cancels one of the most riveting, rich and engaging shows to bless modern television… ” – I agree with you 1,000%
