Looks good – probably won’t be CITY OF GOD, but better than THE HUNTING PARTY. Ryan’s accent surprisingly comes off good too. I’d see this.
That “one picture” of a bird and child reminds me of another famous picture of a buzzard hovering near a dying African child.
The photojournalist published this pic & it won awards.
He even described the scene, and said that he angrily chased that damn buzzard away from the dying child, whom he couldn’t help.
But, sadly, it really does take only one picture to change the world.
Because several years later, this young award-winning photojournalist committed suicide.
Friends said that he never got over his picture of the buzzard hovering near the dying child.
I’m crying as I type this.
You’re thinking of Kevin Carter who was part of the Bang Bang club and in this movie. There’s also a great song about him by the Manic Street Preachers.
Sir Charles, thanks for the info. Didn’t know that photojournalist was that well known.
Look underachieving To bad, it’s great subject that should of been made by a better director.
Silver directed a great film. Shut your cake hole.
The word around the campfire is the script, not the director, lets the Bang Bang Club down. Apparently, it drags down in the Second Act by focusing on a romantic relationship by one of the lesser members of the Bang Bang Club and his love interest. Oh, and Ryan Phillippe is apparently not his “thespian best” in this film, which hurts it as well. Too bad because this story and topic deserves better.
Seconded. I was pretty interested when I read about the project in development. Three impressions from the trailer: Unfocused mess, poor writing and sub-par acting. I like Kitsch from FNL, not sure how he’d do as a movie lead. Phillippe doesn’t have it, and I don’t get why Akerman keeps getting cast in everything.
It looks all over the place with multiple characters (and uncharismatic leads), a love story, famine, war/uprisings, and then the personal toll stuff.
Hmmm Another hate on the white man picture. Apartheid was an awful time, and am glad it’s a thing of the past. True Fact: SA use to be a very prosperous place. Ask anyone who lives there now, it went downhill fast. B.E.E their form of affirmative action isn’t working as well as they thought.
A prosperous place? For who? It sure wasn’t for 90% of its population who were considered as second class citizens just because of their skin color.
I will watch it just because of Taylor Kitsch. I miss Friday Night Lights.
If the “white man” weren’t so evil throughout history (ie, Apartheid, U.S. Slavery, the genocide of the Native Americans, the perniciousness of the missionaries and the church through the centuries) we wouldn’t have movies describing their tyranny and evil, would we? Why the rush toward historical denial, Quinn? You sound like a twerp, Quinn. Pick up Howard Zinn’s People’s History of the United States and “educate” your knuckle-dragging, ignoramus self. Pretty please…
(PS – how could you expect South Africa to be a miracle overnight when, under decades of white rule, black and coloreds were not allowed to be educated, were subjugated to inferior jobs and places of living, were not allowed to do that which allowed whites to get ahead. South Africa needs to cleanse itself of decades of white oppression before blacks and coloreds can become educated, positive contributors to the middle class workforce, healthy from the ravages of alcoholism, drug abuse and HIV….. Remember how the reservation system and genocide set Native Americans back in America? The same is true as to the impact that apartheid rule had on blacks and coloreds.)
So I’m glad the Bang Bang Club is shedding light on a period of world history some whites would love to easily dismiss or forget. Kudos to the filmmakers.
They couldn’t find two Better actors, for this Drama…
Hi Hollywood, save the nudity for the movie screens, wouldja? Seems the trailers are just getting laxer and laxer with regard to T&A. Does the MPAA need to start regulating trailers now?
So funny how all the violence and bloodshed in the trailer didn’t bother you at all, but you see a little flash of breast or butt and you can’t deal. Man, i am so thankful i am not your wife or husband. why is horrific violence okay but the human body offends you?! get your head checked, freak.
You betcha!
We can’t have any nekkid people runnin’ round gettin’ everyone all riled up! I’ll git my gun out if I have to, put a stop to this tom foolery. Just ain’t respectable. Why can’t everyone have good, common sense family values?
Howard Zinn’s People’s History of the United States? Worthless, horrifically slanted Marxist proaganda, pure sand simple. Pabulum for the weak “blame whitey” mindset. Next.
well, um, ‘whitey’ did cause slavery and jim crow and apartheid, right?
just saying…
The undoubtedly great story behind that photograph looks like its been skullfucked with the White-man-suffering-while-trying-to-save-Africa formula. Ryan Phillipe needs to read scripts more fucking closely. REALLY closely.
The book is phenomenal. Should have been a great movie. It is AWFUL. Laughable and ridiculous. You can’t even fault any weird portrayal of important social issues, it is amateurish and bad.
Am seriously tired of watching as hollywood (even indies) makes movie after movie about the black experience through the eyes of pretty white people. so tired and LAME.
there’s “The Big Bang” movie with banderas and “The Big Bang Club”.
That’s a lot of bang, er, for the buck!
