Warner Bros is going to the mattresses on mobster movies. The studio has given the green light to Gangster Squad, the Will Beall-scripted crime drama that will be directed by Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer. The linchpin of the film is Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen, and the studio is formally offering the role to Sean Penn. Ryan Gosling is getting the offer to play one of two cops who try to bring him down. Warner Bros has been sweet on Penn for some time for a role that could be as memorable a gangster turn as when Robert De Niro played Al Capone in The Untouchables. Cohen, a former boxer who became an associate of Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, was a charismatic figure who caroused around town with a gorgeous girl on his arm, and often with his attractive etiquette coach at his side. He once even took part in a Life Magazine profile. But he was also considered a sociopath whose vices included sex and extortion, and whose mood could darken on a dime. When innocent people got hurt, law enforcement hardened to the fact he had to be stopped. The drama, based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman, is the fact-based tale of the crime fighting exploits of a squad of elite Los Angeles officers in the 1940s charged with stopping him and other mobsters. Screenwriter Beall is a former South Central Los Angeles cop who wrote the novel L.A. Rex. Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are producing.
Speaking of Capone, Warner Bros has a project on his formative years, as well. Cicero, scripted by Walon Green, is also building momentum at the studio. I’ve heard there is interest from David Yates as a possible rebound project when he completes work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, his fourth Potter pic. Studio maintains no discussions have happened yet.

Harvey Keitel got nominated for an Oscar for this role in BUGSY.
When it’s done right there is nothing better than a well written crime story, especially based on the facts. Penn can certainly deliver & the 40′s is a great time period for it. Not as interesting as the 70′s perhaps but you get a great director on this and……Paging Mr. Scorsese…Marty…Marteee.
Another piece of antisemitic propaganda from Liberal Hollywood. Shame on the self-hating Jews behind this monstruosity.
How exactly is this anti-semitic?
It’s not she’s just stupid or crazy. Janet are you aware that some of the biggest mafia bosses of all time were Jewish? Ever hear of Meyer Lansky? Bugsy Siegel? How about the Israeli mafia? You are by far the dumbest person to ever post anything on the internet.
douchebags, methinks janet is being sarcastic. irony, anyone…?
Does this make Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese anti-Italian because they made movies about the Italian mafia? I wouldn’t consider “liberal” Hollywood as self-hating because it is making a movie about Jewish gangsters, and I think your implication that “liberal” Hollywood is all self-hating Jews to be in itself to be antisemitic.
i dismiss you based on your spelling
What a script!
I thought that the story in Cicero would be told in The Untouchables: Capone Rising.
Shame on any Jew who cleaves to Mickey Cohen as someone worth defending, Janet.
Is any violent homicidal sociopath worth “cleaving” to , no matter of ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, etc.?
What the world needs now more than ever…
ANOTHER gangster movie, with Penn typecast as a thug, filled with gory murders, low-IQ bums, flaming explosions, and good & bad cops.
Fucking fantastic, Warner Bros!
And they say Hollywood has run out of new ideas!
Mike Ovitz should play Mickey Cohen. After all, he’s had years of practice!
Now that I would pay to see.
As a Jew I am fascinated by the Jewish connection in the mafia and see nothing anti-Semitic about anyone who wants to depict this in a good movie. Self hating Jews? Nah! just some really interesting history that involves some very interesting ethnicities. I have always known about the Jewish connection and these projects sound like winners.
penn?? no way..cohen was a capitalist that hated commies..penn is pro commie & dictatorships and hates capitalism & america..i would definetly not go to the picture or any picture with him in it..thats my 2 cents..
Sounds to me like a perfect part for Mickey Rourke a truly brilliant actor——-I am so tired of seeing Sean Penn doing his usual overacted “gangster” role. It’s time for Hollywood to give Mickey Rourke the chance he deserves and give us the opportunity to once again witness a unique performance from one of the few true talents left in the movies these days…..
I was told by my mom that just before the FBI busted Mr Cohen at his home on Barrington Ave.in LA, as a 3-year old, I got lost cruising Barrington near his home. He was very nice to me and brought me home. We lived just a few mdoirs away from him. My mother opened the door and he said….”she belongs with you!”. What a story!!
al capone RAZA!!!
