UPDATED: As expected, FX has renewed its sophomore drama Justified for a third season. The pickup for the Sony Pictures TV-produced series comes just in time for FX’s upfront party tonight in New York, where the cast of the neo-Western crime drama starring Timothy Olyphant is slated to appear, along with actors from the other FX series. Also expected to get a renewal momentarily is FX’s animated comedy series Archer.
FX brass have been very happy with Justified’s performance. Despite hitting a season low in 18-49 last week, the series is running way ahead of Season 1 as it has emerged as a big DVR gainer, getting a 55%-60% ratings bump from time-shifted viewing. Season-to-date, the drama has averaged 4 million viewers in Live Plus 7 for its original Wednesday 10 PM telecasts. That is up 16% from Season 1. In 18-49, the average is 2.1 million, up 16%. With multiple plays included, each episode of Justified draws 7.4 million total viewers this season, up 9% from Season 1 and close to the cumulative viewership for FX’s flagship drama Sons of Anarchy. The average total 18-49 audience for each episode is 3.8 million, up 10%. Here is FX’s release:
LOS ANGELES, March 29, 2011 – The FX drama series Justified is enjoying one of the most critically acclaimed seasons of any show on television this year and today the network has ordered another season of the hit series, picking up a 13-episode third season. Six all new episodes remain in season two, with the second season finale airing May 4.
“Justified was a critically acclaimed hit series in its first season, but the show has far surpassed our expectations this season,” said FX president John Landgraf. “Creatively, the show is on a roll.”
Developed for television by Graham Yost and starring Timothy Olyphant, Justified is based on the popular Elmore Leonard character “Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens” from his short story Fire in the Hole and some of his other novels.
Yost said, “I always say that the best review we’ve ever received on Justified is the fact that Elmore Leonard gets a kick out of the show. I must add to that. Now tied for the best feedback we’ve ever received is the news that a network as cool and original and supportive as FX is bringing us back for another year.”
“The show’s appeal speaks volumes to Graham’s fresh approach to storytelling,” said Jamie Erlicht, president of programming and production, Sony Pictures Television.
Through seven weeks, first-run episodes of Justified are averaging 3.9 million viewers (+15% vs. season 1) and 2.0 million Adults 18-49 (+18% vs. season 1). The weekly multi-run average viewership for the season 2 is 7.2 million total viewers and 3.7 million Adults 18-49, respective gains of +6% in Total Viewers and +6% in Adults 18-49.
Yost wrote the pilot and serves as Executive Producer/Writer on the series. Leonard is an Executive Producer on the series along with Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Dinner, and Olyphant is Producer. Justified is produced by FX Prods. and Sony Pictures Television.

Note to FX, please get good again.
I’ve missed you.
Well, for me, they haven’t ever stopped being good.I like their current shows like Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Archer, Louie, It’s Always Sunny and Rescue Me.I also really like Lights Out and Terriers.
In regards to the last 2 shows that were launched in recent months, they’ve been great shows, they just haven’t been hit shows.
This is some of the best news I’ve seen today… I can’t wait to see where they take this story, now that they know they have another season!
Thank god. Best show on TV. Olyphant is awesome.
You said it all, love justified. Great acting.
Yes, great news because ‘ Justified ‘ is absolutely wonderful , from top to bottom. Mark my words Olyphant will become a huge film star in the next couple of years. And, ‘ Archer ‘ may be currently, the best well-written comedy , best animated tv show, and the best politically- incorrect comedy on tv right now. I like the fact that F/ X continues to take creative risks , like AMC. But, it would be perfect, if F/X executives would be more patient and allow more new shows to grow an audience, instead of axing them quickly .
At the risk of going off topic or being boring, I think that FX could have kept Lights out, even Terriers for a second season. Since they don’t make TV seasons like they used to (no more than ten to thirteen episodes). I do respect FX for their variety of varied programs. Sons of Anarchy Rocks!
In the same breath, Justified is some kind of winner of a show. I have never seen a hero on TV as cool as Timothy Olyphant in years!
Awesome, they got the renewal, the viewers and now it’s time for some Emmy recognition. This is one of the best shows on TV.
Justified is the only show I make a point to watch. The rest are garbage. Olyphant was great in the movie “Hitman” and is just as awesome in this one.
Wonderful news that Justified has been given season 3. Great writing and excellent cast. And of course, Timothy Olyphant as the hero.
To add to a previous comment…..let’s get an Emmy for this show and for Timothy Olyphant, an outstanding actor!
Too bad “Mad Men” couldn’t jump to FX.
WOW AWESOME!!!!!!!!! ONE MORE SEASON!!!!
I LOVE FX, ALWAYS LOOKING FORWARD TO THEIR SHOWS.
TIMOTHY OLYPHANT HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ACTOR FOR MANY YRS &
HE JUST GETS BETTER & BETTER!!!!!!!!!!
NOW HE JUST NEEDS AN EMMY, WHICH IS VERY WELL DESERVED!!! ROCK ON TIM!!!!!!!!!
Great news!
Yeah! I love Jacob Pitts!! Whoo hoo! Justified Rocks
Wonderful news about Justified. It’s the only drama on tv that I make a point to watch. Great show and wow oh wow – Timothy Olyphant is awesome …doesn’t look too shabby either, in fact best looking actor in HW.
Justified is perfect from beginning to end. Even the Theme song keeps playing in my head. (Wow, so catchy) Walton Goggins SHOULD hands down at least be niminated if not win an Emmy for his portrayal of Boyd Crowder. Hope we get more seasons after #3, a la “The Shield.”
I am timothys numbet i fan and the is great and i just cant take my eyes off of him and yes he should be up for a emmy he should of been up for one last year they keep putting the same actors its boring and wow tim is hot and a great actor and the rest of the cast is great also the actor who plays boyd should also be up for and emmy…
Boyd snuck up from behind and stole season 2, in my opinion. Raylan is totally awesome, except when it comes to women. Winona over Ava and her shotgun? WHAT?! Love you, Justified! I think Mags Bennett used to live next door to me…
Totally agree. It’s nice to have two great actors on opposite sides of the drama.
LOVVVE that show! Hope Raylan and Ava get it on again. She is some HOOTTTTTTT.
I love watching Justified has been picked up for another season can’t wait to see where they take it. The last episode of the season was awesome.
Justified is the best show in years & the only one I will not miss every week. I even watch when they play the same episode back to back. Last night I watched all 4 hours of Justified. Tim & Walter are wonderful. Nick is great too. Sorry to see Mags Bennett go as she was so good. Very impressed with Joelle & Natalie & the rest of the cast. Keep up the good work & let’s hope there are many more seasons of Justified.
It is amazing how well they capture the atmosphere of Eastern Kentucky. I am very pleased to see they renewed Justified. I hate to see Mags go but Raylan and Boyd will make it interesting one way or another. lol
I am very happy the powers that be have decided to renew Justified. It is a wonderful show and one of the few my hubby and I both agree upon to watch. We loved Timothy in DEADWOOD and he is just a wonderful actor. I hated to see Margo Martindale die. She is a wonderful character actress and is wonderful in every role she has played. And she hails from the Great State of Texas!!
Can she come back as the nice twin sister…………..
I’m a 64-year-old retired journalist, a Vietnam veteran and, for three years, a military policeman working in a Tokyo red light district. I’ve been a roadhouse bouncer and a sheriff’s deputy in rural Arkansas. I’ve seen it all, and nothing brings back those feelings of excitement, the expectations of danger, like this show. I love it!
Awesome , one of my very favorites !!!
maybe try to infuse a little more of the kind of character development that dead wood did. good guys bad guys or indifferent guy can still be interesting. glad to see a third season is in the works. from a died in the wool yankee who thought deadwood was the single most entertaining series i have ever watched. so much so that my wife bought me the whole three series on dvd, which i borrow to friends whenever they show a interest in the series.
Glad to see it’s been renewed. But when does it go back on?
Deadwood and Justified are outstanding shows. Really happy that J is going to continue. I love Olyphant’s facial expression of “being amazed at people’s continuous and expected poor decisions.” O has that same quality that Nicholson and Trivolta have: the ability to keep you interested by merely having their face in the camera without having to say anything. Keep it going.
