The James Bond franchise has put Daniel Craig in drag to endorse the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. Produced by Barbara Broccoli, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy), and written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), this is the very definition of ill-advised:

What in the world…
No. James Franco was a bad idea.
Ill advised to bring attention to inequality? I beg to differ. As much shit as I give audiences for paying to see crap like “Grown Ups”, surely people won’t be turned off from seeing future Bond films because of this. And if they do — they’re idiots.
I tried posting this response to the juvenile, politically correct and factually incorrect stunt several hours ago, but Nikki and the girls refused to run it— but as no one, not even Nikki, should fear the TRUTH I will try again:
AND THE “INEQUALITY” IS WHERE:
The Secretary of State of the United States is, and has been on two other occasions, a woman— and if she had run a smarter political campaign would be President of the United States today!
The most powerful person in American politics other than the President— and until recently was the Speaker of the House of Representatives— is a woman!!
The highest paid performer on television is a woman!!!
Two of the three network news anchors are women!!!!
Over 60% of all journalists are women!!!!!
Over 60% of all graduate students are women!!!!!
Over 60% of all Law School students are women!!!!!!
Over 60% of all Medical School students are women!!!!!!!
Over 60% of all college students are women!!!!!!!!
Over 50% of all CEO’s for Fortune 1000 corporations are women!!!!!!!!
OF the over 500,000 local and state government officals over 55% are women!!!!!!!!!
The presidents of over 50% of colleges and university systems— including Harvard & Princeton— are women!!!!!!!!!
Over 50% of all Congressional staff are women!!!!!!!!!!
Over 60% of all federal/executive branch personnel are women!!!!!!!!!!
Of the 9 Justices on the Supreme Court of the United States, 3 (one third) are women!!!!!!!!!!!!
Over 60% of all sitting federal judges are woman!!!!!!!!!!!!
IN FACT, the founder and CEO of this website is a woman, etc., etc.,etc,. etc.,etc., etc.
The “Glass Ceiling” exists only in the minds of the politically correct run amok for whom the truth is an obstacle to the endless perpetuation of stereotype and myth— and does an injustice to all the trailblazers who brought and fought for gender equality throughout our society.
Since this is a film & television website, why don’t you rattle off the number of women film directors. It’s only 4% and hasn’t budged in a decade. At this rate, it’s estimated that it will take women 700 years to achieve equality in the film.
YOU DO NOT SEEK EQUALITY, BUT QUOTAS!
Excellence in the arts in not gender based but performance based— $$$$$$$$$$$ equals success, not some arbitrary number. By your own logic, cast about this website daily and admire all the women in positions of import in Hollywood.
Play the % game at your own risk— and is stupidly pointless besides as your comment seeks to deflect from the subject, the inane stunt video, and the reality as I gave but a few facts.
Nice try, though.
I’m guessing you are “whiskey” reincarnated. I’d recognize your women hating rants anywhere. If you think people work in Hollywood based on “their excellence in the arts”, you obviously don’t work in this business. Why do you hate women in particular? Something must have happened For you to direct this amount of rage toward them? What’s up? Seriously?
Dear Jen; (SEE BELOW)
Rather childish and weak personal vitriol— but perhaps that is actually the best your obviously frustrated self can muster.
SORRY if reveling in the facts about the successes of vast majorities of women in all fields of human endeavor troubles you— but perhaps it is simply due to your inability to measure up to the rest of us.
SERIOUSLY, I will not bother to give you any more facts as it is apparent that you have trouble with the truth and obviously with men.
NO amount of information will suffice as you are like an insect trapped in ancient amber. Jen, society has passed your old tired myths, stereotypes and hatreds behind.
Best of luck to you and write if you get work.
DJT
P.S. Maybe you can get a job with NPR— they like to make up hateful and intellectually insulting stuff, too. Fit right in!!!
wah wah wah get over it..men made the world…they do a better job most times and they dont leave to take care of kids…it would be a better world for families if one parent (mother) stayed home with kids…latch key kids are a horrible idea…i work with women that pay all their salary in day care..they just cant imagine being home all day with the kids…get over it and dont have kids then…our division is also headed by a woman that likes to hire men..so go figure..
Oh shut up, you moron. Don’t be pissed because the woman you work for is smarter and harder working than you and she is…oh dare I say it, your BOSS.
no she is not..she is the owner’s niece…i guess thats one way to get to the top…
Okay… I think I’ve seen too much now.
look, it’s Cate Blanchett…
The only thing this proves is Daniel Craig is ugly whether male or female.
he is talented and taking risks good for him
Wonderful piece. Riveting. Smart and brave.
Designed for the citizens of the UK. Obviously not for idiots still infected by the Puritans bullshit legacy stateside. Bravo to Craig, Dench, Broccoli and Taylor-Wood.
Thanks Deadline team, for proving just how far we haven’t come here in the US.
Yes, it is “puritanical” to expect men to dress like men and women to dress like women. I hope to one day evolve so we won’t have to conform to such heinous expectations.
Or maybe… you’re an idiot.
I agree with Sara.
Has there been a more misogynistic film franchise than James Bond?
The point. You missed it.
Bad idea. Really bad idea. Cringe-worthy, to say the least. You don’t mess with a franchise character like that.
Out of character, fine. But to bring James Bond and M into this damages the 007 brand.
Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman are spinning in their graves.
…Not to mention Ian Fleming!
wasn’t cubby broccoli a gangster? and why is it that my posts don’t get posted anymore. i’ve been writing in this comment section since it was part of the l.a. weekly.
Misogynist.
What a horrible way to disrespect the James Bond legacy. You just don’t mess with a brand character like that.
Cubby Broccoli, Harry Saltzman and Ian Fleming must be spinning in their graves!
How embarrassing.
In your face, Alan and the likes! Spread the word, women are 51% of the population in the US, according to the 2010 census. I’m glad to see the Brits are doing something about it.
He looks great in drag and should wear this disguise in the next Bond movie. Thunderball’s opening fight scene had Connery punching a “widow with a veil” after a funeral it turned out to be a bad guy in drag and it was a great fight scene. I’d enjoy seeing Bond being forced to fight two or three bad guys while dressed as a woman it would be funny and entertaining.
The only people who have a problem with this is backward thinking American Hollywood hacks who somehow still live with a 1950′s mentality. Oooh, James dressed in drag. It’s the franchise’s ruin. Middle America shall collectively reach for the smelling salts.
This is the 21st century, you know.
There’s nothing wrong with the idea, but the execution was so pathetic…like 19 year old kids thought of it.
Agreed. Really badly directed and put together.
And a terrible frock.
I commend DANIEL CRAIG for putting his neck out there and doing this ad. It’s hard out there for women, period. Only getting the message out there will it make it easier for the next generation….including my young daughter, Braco!!!
He’s not James Bond. He’s an ACTOR! Actors act, remember?
Yes, but he’s playing James Bond in the film, and M is castigating him for his attitudes.
I know the intent of this was to highlight women’s equality, but message that comes through is all about 007.
What the hell is wrong with the UK? Terrible ad, just dreadful. Another overreach by the PC Police.
How is this a bad idea?
Is the issue that it emasculates the guy who plays James Bond? Because I don’t think it does, if anything it makes me respect the actor more. To be willing to get in drag and get involved in this campaign. Judi Dench is saying some pretty important facts while Daniel Craig gets your visual attention; it’s a nice pairing, I think it gets some good information across.
Did you miss the point just because he was in drag? Grow up.
Must you distract attention from the video’s purpose — the fact that women aren’t treated with equality?
Good job Deadline, glad to know you’re focusing on what counts. The evils of sexism are nothing compared to a male icon wearing drag.
so you think is this what women is all about for you? make-up?
wow. did i just see that? i miss connery
Alan, you’re a moron who in one neatly pathetic paragraph has proved that men -well, certainly you – are not superior to women. As for this clip being misjudged, who cares? Even if this did hurt Bond – which it obviously doesn’t – anyone who worries more about a movie franchise than the persistent global unequal treatment of women needs to take a long hard look at themselves. There are actually things happening in the world outside the movie business, folks. And before I get accused of being someone not working in Hollywood and thus beneath contempt, I do work in it.
You’re absolutely right, Mike. To end the horrible persistent global unequal treatment of women, more men need to dress like women… That will surely solve the problem.
How about we just call this a terrible idea and try to actually solve the problem?
