EXCLUSIVE: It’s a happy ending to the pilot season for Jeff Hephner after all. The actor, who after grueling auditions landed the lead in NBC’s drama pilot Playboy but was replaced after the table read with Eddie Cibrian, has been tapped for a co-starring role opposite Kelsey Grammer on the Starz eight-episode drama series Boss. Coincidentally, like Playboy, the Lionsgate/Grammnet-produced Boss is set and filming in Chicago. Written by Farhad Safinia and directed by Gus Van Sant, Boss centers on Kane (Grammer), the mayor of Chicago, who is diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition that only he and his doctor know about. Hephner will play the state’s treasurer, an impeccably handsome and ambitious Chicago native who is clearly about to become a major player on the Chicago political scene. Hephner, repped by Paradigm and the Group Entertainment, is recurring on CW’s Hellcats and has also done arcs on NBC’s Mercy and Fox’s The O.C.

Good for him…
No way Playboy flies more than four episodes on NBC.
Way to go Jeff. You don’t want to be on any show where the producers think Eddie Cibrian is the right choice.
Ha! Nice
Great, now the Hephner fans (all two of them) can quit crying that he didn’t get Playboy.
If you knew Hep you’d be excited too man
where does a comment like that even come from?
Honestly, this is a win for him. This show has a better chance of succeeding than Playboy, which lets face it, if you’re not showing titties what’s the point? Greenblatt should have let that one stay at Showtime.
def worked out better for him. even if neither project gets past the pilot, this pedigree is better on his resume.
BOSS is already picked up for 8 eps.
Why did Bob Greenblatt pass on Hephner? He usually does a great job with casting? Why did he screw up here? If he wanted someone more well known for Playboy, fine? But, why did he choose Eddie? Personally, I would have gotten Jack Coleman to be the lead in Playboy. What went wrong?
I’ll tell you why Greenbacks passed on Hephner. Heph wasn’t in his crony pool. In other words, Bob’s “people” would profit more from casting Cibrian… and yes, owe him.
Best thing Hephner can do is silently stick them the finger by killing it on Boss. Hope he does.
Note to Bob: Karma doesn’t give a shit about your people.
Good for Jeff! Must feel pretty damn good to suddenly find himself on a series with 8 eps guaranteed, and so soon after dodging a bullet with the Playboy pilot debacle. I’m convinced that show will turn out to be Burlesque as a 1-hr, and another heavily promoted, overhyped embarrassment for NBC, a la the awesomely bad The Cape.
i’ve read the pilot. IT’S INCREDIBLE. it’s definitely old HBO quality. Albrecht is a dick, but the guy has sense like nobody else.
Too bad Starz isn’t doing Cocaine Cowboys series instead of Magic City. Owner of the hotel is good option, but the bigger scale would be better.
Which pilot script is incredible?
This is good news for him. Because it will only be 8 episodes, he could still do hellcats if it gets picked up for a second season.
Hephner is way to clean for playboy-an hes a winner!!An with this cast-can’t miss!
This is sweet justice. Sorry Greenbleck!
Nice. A good actor and an equally good guy.
Break a leg in Chicago.
What the hell? How do you know this? Bob is a fair man and wouldn’t stoop to doing something like that.
poor guy. Doesn’t he know that no STARZ shows succeed? This sounds awful.
