NEW YORK, March, 29, 2011 – It was announced today at CinemaCon, by Bob Berney, President, Theatrical Distribution that FilmDistrict will release “The Rum Diary,” based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel that was ultimately published in 1998. It stars Johnny Depp and will be released on October 28, 2011. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson (“Withnail and I”) from his own screenplay and also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. “The Rum Diary” is produced by Infinitum Nihil, the production company headed by Depp and Christi Dembrowski, along with Graham King and Tim Headington. Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis also produce.
“The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s “The Lost Generation,” Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.
“Hunter S. Thompson became close with Johnny Depp during the filming of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and showed Depp the unpublished manuscript for The Rum Diary,” says producer and FilmDistrict co-founder Graham King. “I am extremely proud to bring this novel to film and to honor Hunter’s legacy.”
Peter Schlessel, CEO of FilmDistrict and President of GK Films, says, “The Rum Diary” is a special project for all of us here, as it is a true collaboration between both of our entities. Depp gives an extraordinary performance in this remarkable adaptation.”
“Robinson directed one of my favorite films, “Withnail and I” – combine that with Hunter S. Thompson and it’s a match made in celluloid heaven,” says Bob Berney, President of Distribution, FilmDistrict.
“The Rum Diary” is a GK Films, Infinitum Nihil and Film Engine production produced by Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, Anthony Rhulen, Robert Kravis, Tim Headington and Graham King.

So Jack Sparrow meets Love story with a splash of the mob? Alright
Are you kidding me? Are you KIDDING ME? The life and tales of the late and great Hunter S. Thompson (Dr. Gonzo) can be summed up as Jack Sparrow meets Love Story with a splash of mob? Go read a book, and fuck yourself while you’re at it.
I’m ashamed to be human.
I’m thrilled to see this project coming to fruition. Let me also suggest another Johnny Depp dream performance (like Depp’s brilliant turn as Hunter in “Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas”) – Johnny Depp as Keith Richards in a “Rolling Stones” bio pic – directed by Martin Scorsese of course.
It would be awesome to have this get made while the key members are still alive -allowing the actors to spend time and absorb their mannerisms. Scorsese has not only done a Rolling Stones concert film, but has used their music – extremely well – in countless films. Depp and Scorsese is a pairing that cinema needs.
“Rolling Stones”
Suggested Cast:
MICK JAGGER – Jude Law
KEITH RICHARDS – Johnny Depp
RONNIE WOODS – Clive Owen
CHARLIE WATTS – Ewan McGregor
So horrible it might work
Much more pumped about this follow up to “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” then another “Pirates” movie.
Love everything in this project and now movie ready for us except this Amber Read starlet (what did you think Johnny ? Come on..) and i am not jealous believe me ! lol not seriously i would have been good with lot’s of other young actresses..but this young lady is just not really good, she has a nice plastic granted but as for acting..not so much..well i will still go to see this movie but i just hope she proves me wrong..i doubt it..but i will anyway go for my love everything Hunter S Thompson, Johnny Depp and other Jenkins, Ribisi, Eackhart and Rispoli..
p.s: great idea Jason, i would love to see a Depp/Scorcese collaboration..
I waited decades from Hunter’s first mention of The Rum Diary to the eventual publication. It’s a great read. I’m very happy Johnny is bringing it to the screen. It was fun seeing Raoul Duke and his Samoan attorney briefly at the start of Rango.
Rango was amazing, great job.
I love Bruce Robinson as a director and can’t wait to see the caliberation between him and Johnny Depp!
I’m glad to see the film finally make it to release, but after reading that the character of Yeamon (so pure yet so nasty) was cut, I’m reserving judgment. And for the record, Chenault is not Sanderson’s fiance, nor even Yeamon’s, but a frigid, yet desperate and pathetic Smithie using sex to search for…something.
It will be interesting to see how Depp portrays the morally ambiguous, self-serving yet clueless Kemp (who–due to it being the 1950′s) thinks he’s old at age 30!). If his characterization is even close to the masterful portrayal of, say George Jung, then it should be well worth watching.
@Mme Olenska,
There are quite a few fans with the same complaint as yours, that Yeamon has been cut out of the movie. However, according to Hunter’s family, it was Hunter’s decision to cut that character out of the film.
