EXCLUSIVE: It’s all over but the press release! Almost a month after Deadline revealed that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive dad of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother.
Zack Snyder is directing for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. The Superman film is being produced by Chris Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012.
Now, the speculation will begin on who will play the Superman villain. Early reports had Viggo Mortensen as the likely candidate, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible, if he signs that deal to star with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron in Universal Pictures’ Snow White and the Huntsman. Let the guessing game begin! Costner is repped by WME and One Talent Management.

ZACK, PLEASE HIRE OLIVIA WILDE AS LOIS!!! SHE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THE PART. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL AND INSANELY TALENTED!!! I’M YELLING BECAUSE I LOVE HER FOR THE PART SO MUCH.
Lois only has a small part. It would be a waste.
Spoiler alert: Her part will be more substantial in future films!
Please, Olivia Wilde is not insanely talented. I could see Rebecca Hall as Lois.
I would have liked to see Costner as a villian, but oh well
That would have been inspired. However, Snyder is not one for inspiration. He is a by-the-numbers guy. Always surprising to remember he went to art school, since he has so little imagination. Every image has to be spoon fed to him from some comic book or manga.
Your juvenile protest could be attached to nearly every A-list director in the biz. Certainly the same could be said of Nolan. As for Fincher….when’s the last time he did something original that wasn’t taken or adapted from a book?? Snyder at least tries to bring a unique visual style to the table.
That’s the point. The visual style has to be spoon fed to Snyder. No imagination even though he was at an art school at one time. I don’t think you understood the post. Dragging in the names of directors who don’t share that weakness of Snyder’s is bizare.
“He is not one for inspiration”? “little imagination”?
I think someone who can create the world of Suckerpunch must have some inspiration. Whether you think that movie is good or bad ..
we would like to have that imagination.
Sucker Punch looks xeroxed from Japanese comic books. Snyder’s previous work is xeroxed from American comic books. Dude has surprisingly little imagination.
I read these comments a while back and thought they were a little harsh on Snyder. He is, arguably, and by definition, visionary – for ’300′ alone – a unique fusion of visual style and dynamic storytelling, and I applaud him for that. Wasn’t a fan of Watchmen but don’t think I was the target audience, and it was still engaging and exciting.
But then I saw Suckerpunch last night, and I think his dream run is over.
Imagine, if you will, a twelve year-old geeky comic book fanboy winning a competition, in which he gets to dictate what film a studio shoots. He sits in the boardroom as the execs listen, and (*SPOILERS AHEAD*) says…
“It has to have guns. And fight scenes. And hot girls, yeah I like hot girls. In underwear! And they fight…NINJAS! No wait, MASSIVE ninjas. And one has a machine gun! Oh, and the girls are all really awesome fighters too. Not sure why, they just are. Then they have to catch a TRAIN…with a BOMB on it that’s going to EXPLODE…and it’s in a FUTURISTIC CITY… on another PLANET. And there’s guards there too… no wait, ROBOT guards! And also they fight other baddies… like ummm…NAZIS! yeah, let’s do Nazis… ROBOT NAZIS! And one of the girls has her own robot too…which can FLY! And also they have to fight ORCS in a CASTLE, and they fly down to attack them from a BOMBER! Actually we should put a HELICOPTER in some scenes too, with one of those SIDEGUNS! Ok, I think that’s it, that’d be awwweeesome. No WAIT, I forgot something. Let’s have a DRAGON! A FLYING, FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON. And the girl kills it, too.”
The executives sigh, and one perks up: ‘maybe we can do it like it’s all in her imagination’.
Jesus Christ, that was hard to sit through. And every element in the imagined boardroom is actually in the film. I also think I’ve forgotten a few.
He would be incapable of playing a villain, then he may have to stretch himself. The poor guy has a permanently fixed face – that dead-pan grin – that never appears to widen or droop.
One could suggest his non-plussed personality has been attacked by Kryptonite before he even gets to, ‘camera…..action.’
Awesome casting choice! Kevin Costner will make a great Pa Kent.
Now if only they could bring back Terrence Stamp as General Zod!
Time warp! Wasn’t this announced a couple of months ago?
It wasn’t official until now! It was just an ‘internet’ rumor!
But everybody reported it months ago. And hey, Deadline doesn’t do rumor, they do scoops! Deadline revealed this months ago and then hundreds of other sites reported Deadline’s scoop.
This is starting to sound really good.
Do it right, Zack Snyder!
How many reboots does this make?
I know! It’s beyond number, at this point. Why bother?
One, actually. Two, if you count Returns, which I don’t because it was set in the continuity of the Reeves flicks. Either way, hardly “beyond number”.
One. Superman Returns was a quasi-sequel.
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. Not the worst couple in the world. It’s weird to see all of these once enormous stars getting cast as grannies these days. But I guess that’s just how it goes…
They don’t have to be “grannies”. They’re just playing their age, 50+ makes perfect sense for Kal El’s Adoptive parents!
Diane Lane as Martha Kent, MILF!!!
Hope the role is deserving of Costner’s undervalued talents.
Anyway, please load up on more old actors. I’m tired of all these youngens. Actors get over 50 and they can’t collect a paycheck anymore. A few bombs and they are dogmeat. Hollywood forgets that once upon a time, the old actors made a lot of money for them. Where is the loyalty?
Loyalty is only as good as your last profitable project.
ARE WE SURE COSTNER WASN’T HIRED TO REPLACE SNYDER AS DIRECTOR??
That seems more logical. Who is the one with the directing awards here?
one could only wish
20 years ago, Kevin Costner would have been in the running to play Superman, and Diane Lane would have been on the shortlist for Lois Lane. And they would have been infinitely better than that wet blanket Henry Cavill and whoever they cast for Lois.
HAHAHA
God so painfully true. I was just thinking that.
Diane would have never been cast as Lois in 1991. Or even in 1996, post Judge Dread (*her biggest role to date at that point)
Her star didn’t shine until she was older, that’s what makes her so great.
Streets of Fire is the exception, and only because of the opening song. But that’s not enough to cast opposite a Superman-as-follow-up-to-Dances-With-Wolves.
Bogie to Huston; “What do you think …is casting 50% of a movie?”
Huston; “Closer to 95%”
No to Olivia Whatsherface, Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Lois.
You have me until “Zack Snyder.”
Let’s see some flashback footage from Field of Dreams make it appear as if Kal El’s rocket ship crash landed into the cornfield where the baseball players will eventually come. Kevin is standing there looking at his handiwork then with some CGI the space ship from Krypton crashes and Kevin runs toward it.
Costner is still beautiful.
Now THAT would be inspired. Great to have KC back in any event.
Great to hear kevin has been confirmed as jonathan kent. He is a great choice for the role. Can’t wait to see how he and dine are as the kents. Can’t wait to see what they do with the kents and I hope they keep pa kent alive for this series.
great news!
Now all we need is:
Liam Neeson as Jor El
Gemma Arterton or Jessical Biel for Lois Lane
Denzel Washington for Perry White
Adrien Brody for Lex Luthor
and NO ZOD!
You’d rather have yet another incarnation of the boring Luthor than Zod again? Bizarro world…
Costner is going to eat Snyder alive. He’ll roll right over him.
Enough with Lex Luthor! Been done to death! Bring in Brainiac and make it really interesting!
Superman story doesn’t really have a story! So casting is going to be the key. But I still have my doubts over Henry whatsisname. He doesn’t look like a Superman. Oh well, once he wears his undies outside his pants, may be he’ll look the part!
“Enough with Lex Luthor! Been done to death! Bring in Brainiac and make it really interesting!”
I just love how everyone thinks it’s okay to use Brainiac as a villain and not use Lex Luthor. If you knew your Superman comics, Lex Luthor was Brainiac’s creator and leader. So if they’re going to use Brainiac as a villain, might as well use Lex Luthor.
ACTUALLY @brockybalbos if YOU read YOUR comics you’d know Braniac was created on KRYPTON, and NOT by Lex Luthor !!!
Lex Luthor did not create Brainiac. Although considering how convoluted this character’s history has been it’s easy to see how you could get confused. Wikipedia has a good listing for the character who has been %#!*ed with more than the average supervillian. Personally I like the Silver Age version much better than the shiny metal robot thing of later incarnations, or the preposterous Smallville take. As to Luthor, I agree with other posters, give him a rest. Unless you’re going to go bald and intensely evil, forget it. Too bad they never cast Telly Savalas in the part.
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Ma and Pa Kent…boy, does this make me feel old.
And, regarding Zack Snyder…I, too, have been unimpressed with his work for the most part to date. His ride off of 300 has been extraordinary while not very satisfying.
