BREAKING: Looks like Universal Pictures has won the battle for the next film to be directed by Oscar-winning The King’s Speech helmer Tom Hooper. The dealmaking has started for Hooper to direct Les Miserables, a full-blown musical adaptation of the Cameron Mackintosh-produced perennial stage hit. This is the first film he’s begun negotiations on since winning the Oscar, but insiders in Hooper’s camp stopped short of saying it would definitively be his next film. I hear that’s how it will work out.
Mackintosh is producing with Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and Bill Nicholson has written the script. The intention is to begin production before year’s end, somewhere in Europe. After the success of The King’s Speech — a $13 million budget film that could reach $450 million worldwide gross when it’s through — Hooper had been widely courted for his next slot. The Weinstein Company tempted him with Tulip Fever, and I’m told there was talk of an adaptation of Macbeth, among others. Hooper was tempted instead to film the musical adaptation of the 1862 Victor Hugo novel, the struggle by ex-con Jean Valjean to outrun his past and his relentless pursuer Javert. The musical, which opened in London in 1985, features such songs as I Dreamed A Dream, On My Own, and Bring Him Home. It is certainly a different film from Universal’s stage musical foray Mamma Mia! (which made the studio a fortune), but Les Miserables is appealing because it’s a branded musical with a reasonable price tag that will attract a strong cast. ICM is making Hooper’s deal.

If you are willing to go with an older Valjean, Mandy Patinkin could nail the role
Alfie Boe has to play ValJean! There are other wonderful parts that Hugh Jackman could do. I so hope they make this with the integrity that Les Mis deserves….the actors have to be able to really sing for this!
Isn’t this about 20 years too late?
Val Jean absolutely has to be ALfie Boe. After seeing him in the 25th Anniversary Concert it is impossible to imagine anyone else in the role.
The actors that everyone has suggested would be great in Les Mis as a non musical movie, but since they are doing the musical version, they need broadway type performers that can really sing. My vote is for Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean. Take a look at the PBS special of the 25th Anniversary concert at the O2. He is AWESOME! and as a bonus…he can act!
Looking forward to the movie musical, Les Miserables. Alfie Boe as Valjean and Ramin Karimloo as Enjolras. Both men enthralled the 25th anniversary concert audiences with their superb and passionate performances. I admittedly am not well versed in the politics of casting major motion pictures, but this amazing story must be told through the strong and soaring voices these men possess. I can think of a musical from the early 1960s that starred a young lady not yet well known to Hollwood: Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins. I believe she won an Academy Award!
Ben Barnes could play Marius, but the movie would have to be played asap. He has a gorgeous voice – sang a couple of songs for the movie Easy Virtue and did the whole soundtrack for Killing Bono. His acting could improve, but I never liked Marius that much anyway, just his songs.
Someone mentioned Robert Pattinson a ways back…and then others have questioned his ability to sing. He can in fact sing, rather well however I don’t think I’d be impressed with him for Marius…but you never know, maybe he’ll shock us!!!
This could be a huge hit or a giant miss. I don’t want to see Nick Jonas in this film. if they cast him, I won’t watch the movie period. He was sadly miscast in the 25th Anniversary show. It was agonizing to watch him screw up what people like Michael Ball did so beautifully, and you could tell Nick was not comfortable with the show. He almost looked like someone they drug in at the last minute because their original choice came down with hepatitus or something.
I’m not so sure I would want them to cast Matt Lucas either. He grates on my nerves because he thinks he’s the funniest person on the planet. Forget Hugh Jackman. The ONLY logical choice is Alfe Boe and I do believe he can act.
Okay. I’ve stayed quiet for long enough!
Valjean > Alfie Boe (He’s perfect for this)
Javert > Hugh Jackman (Again, brilliant)
Fantine > Amy Adams or Keira Knightley
Eponine > Definitely an unknown 16-year-old!
Marius > Hmm… someone unknown but who has done a couple of films?
Cosette > It’s a small part (she has like, 15 minutes of stage time) so I think an unknown 16-year-old would be best (but who can sing well)
Enjolras > Please make it be David Thaxton. Please!!
now i dont think it is fair to compare nick jonas to michael ball, yes michael ball is awesome but nick jonas did the best he could and for a pop background he did an amazing job. i think he would make a good not great choice for Marius.
Alfie would be perfect for Jean Valjean
Anne Hathaway for Fantine
Samantha Barks for Eponine
hugh Jackman for Javert
and an unknown for cosette
