Katie Couric was on David Letterman last night amidst speculation that she is leaning towards leaving her CBS Evening News anchor job to do a daytime syndicated talk show when her contract is up in June. “I have no idea actually,” she said about her plans. “I’m figuring out what I want to do; I’m in the process of figuring out the future.”
Letterman gave her a pep talk about staying put. “Once you take the anchor chair, that’s what you do,” he said. “It’s not like it’s a temp gig.” He listed long-time evening news anchors like Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings. “They get in it, they saddle up and they ride into the sunset.”
“You can’t leave. Because it takes awhile, there’s a period of adjustment to get accustomed to the trust and build up faith in the character of the person presenting the news. And you can’t just pull the rug out from under the viewers.” Here is the video:

Well, Couric’s raging diffidence about staying on was her exit announcement, right there. She’s gone. And if I were running CBS News and watched that interview, I’d help her pack.

What Dave said is spot on! Not that I am a huge fan of Katie but CBS is the network of Walter and Dan; people who became trusted and well loved. When it comes to news, especially the evening news, it takes a while.
Maybe Katie knows its best to get out. Maybe she doesn’t believe in herself; that she has what it takes. Dave is surely a fan of Katie and believes in her. She doesn’t seen to share that. She has doubts. Whether its in herself, or in the network that they’ll give her the time to build that long earned trust, is yet to be seen.

CBS has made it clear that they are not gonna pay her the same as her current contract, so why should she stay? Does CBS even want her to stay…
Just “maybe” Katie might do something really interesting like join Keith Olbermann at Current next Fall, once she gets some time off during the summer to spend with her girls. That move would benefit both her and Current: They’d be getting another solid journalist, and Katie could stop worrying about the ratings BS and go after news she cares about.
How about Katie stays and Letterman leaves? Sounds like a win win situation to me.
She is terrible, worst anchor by far and no amount of time will fix her lack of skill and gravitas. Interesting to hear the halfhearted encouragement from the crowd… felt trumped up by some producer giving them a cue. Nobody will care if she leaves.
They should BOTH retire now, no one is watching either of them.

You may recall that during the first months of her current gig, she had frequent commentaries and interiews with the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, with only a single token appearance by Michael Moore as “balance.” Couric a liberal? If you believe that, I’d like to introduce you to Harvey Fierstein Jr.
In fact, all three evening news anchors are conservative: Couric, Brian Williams (whom no less than Karl Rove labeled the GOP’s “go-to guy” at NBC) and Diane Sawyer, who worked in the Nixon White House, f’chrissake. But by all means, keep yammering about this mythological “liberal media,” because we all need a good laugh.
