Logo, MTV Networks’ channel targeting gays and lesbians, has picked up all five seasons of the fabulously campy British comedy series Absolutely Fabulous. It will launch with a weekend-long marathon April 16. “When it comes to ‘OMFG’ television, Ab Fab sets the bar with its notorious, hard-partying duo Patsy and Edina,” Logo’s SVP Marc Leonard said. Ab Fab follows publicist Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and her best friend, Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), as they live the life of excess in every possible way.

I wish they’d team up with BBC and commission a new series.
I still believe this could be a HUGE hit if they did an US version. Yes yes yes, I know the false belief that “US audiences aren’t ready/don’t get this type of humor” but given that it’s already a success here proves that notion false.
Anyone ever see or know how to get a copy of the FOX pilot from 2 years ago with Kristen Johnston and Katharine Hahn?
I was always curious to see how that turned out.
bad.
JJ – I went to the dress rehearsal of the Fox pilot. I had mixed reviews. Kristen Johnston played a FANTASTIC Patsy but it ended there. It was still neat to see what they tried to do with it though the pilot wasn’t strong at all and it was a very weak script so I completely understand why it was passed on.
I wonder if the Logo network will censor all the fun out of this series in the way they do everything else. It has always seemed a contradiction to me that a network based on gay liberation would be so restrictive and morally judgmental of the work it showcases.
word, stephen. Logo is prissyer than anyone else in television. The guys that run that network have sticks up their azzes.
It’s not the programming and development people who censor this stuff – it’s Viacom’s standards and practices people who censor these shows, as far as I understand. So the same people who are deciding what’s appropriate for Nickelodeon are the same people determining what can and can’t be allowed on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
i’m shocked this didn’t happen upon the launch of Logo network. What took them so long?
Dull dull dull. Anyone named Edina and Patsy is a bore. I couldn’t get thru one episode without changing the channel.
Interesting on the ‘censorship’ of Logo – so long as there is bare flesh everyone’s cool – or screeching drag queens. But showing crazy drug-fueled lives? (Like that ISN’T going on in Boyztown WeHo…) – give me a break!
I’m sorry…an actual adult human being–not a cartoon, not a 13-year-old–actually said, “When it comes to ‘OMFG’ television…” and this person is a senior vice president of anything?
Well, my goodness, I’m going to have to recalibrate my settings for “cretinous.”
I’m with you there, Really?.
I can’t figure out what is worse though; using to term “OMFG television” or thinking that this 20 year old recycle will cause anyone to say “OMFG” or anything like it.
AbFab was licensed by MTVN for Comedy Central a few years back. This seems more like a renewal of the license than something new.
I agree. Comedy Central is where the US first ran AbFab. Just a renewal and switch, no biggie.
What I fear, though: Sitcom rerun eps keep getting cropped as nets want/need more ad time. An episode with a :27 TRT on BBC may have been :25 TRT on Comedy Central and could run even shorter now on Logo. Your fav moments could be excised! Hope it’s not the case…
1990 called – it wants its comedy back.
I wonder why LOGO has not acquired the ground breaking SHOWTIME series “BROTHERS” ?
Its a classic and not only the first series on Showtime but the first series to star two openly gay characters and the first show to realistically deal with AIDS . Not to mention it was damned funny.
Thoughts?
There were a couple of AbFab US knockoffs. One can say that Cybill, with Christine Baranski in the Patsy Stone role, came close.
I ABSOLUTELY love AB FAB. Solid and strong acting/comedy. Wish it could have kept going forever. But, we don’t need an American COPY. We already had an American “version.” It was called Cybil. Let’s not forget AB FAB started back in the 90′s… I know our creative talent can come up with come fresh ideas. The networks have to continue to take more risks.
LOGO, LOGO, LOGO… poor confused, underfunded, mismanaged LOGO. An idea with so much potential– to be the grown up MTV for the cutting edge gay community. A focused, in-your-face, exciting network to honor the past and be on the pulse of tomorrow. You would think: documentaries, reality series, drama, comedy series, movies of the week, music video shows, workout and cooking shows, series on AIDS prevention and HIV awareness. Instead…. we got one show–Noahs Arc. And for some reason, it all stopped there. Cancelled after two “seasons”. I mean, what else are people who watch LOGO watching that its only series wasn’t matching up to? RuPaul is saving that wasteland network’s ass right now.
For some reason, reruns of 90′s tv shows (endless marathons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and now ABFAB) seem to be the only programming this step-sister network can afford. WHAT A SHAME. Logo HAD so much potential. Now, it’s just an embarrasment for the community, as well as the parent company.
