Fox said earlier this month that the 3D Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is due to be released Feb. 10, 2012. Today’s release:
LOS ANGELES (March 29, 2011) — Lucasfilm, one of the world’s leading film and entertainment companies, and Prime Focus, the global visual entertainment services company, are proud to announce their collaboration on the 3D conversion of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace for theatrical release, heralding an exciting new era in Star Wars entertainment. Prime Focus was selected by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) following an exhaustive testing process.
“It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology, the resources and the time to do this right,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas. “I’m very happy with the results I’ve been seeing on Episode I.”

People don’t even want to watch it in regular D.
So very depressing.
George, please, I’m begging you: MOVE ON ALREADY!
You used to be a real filmmaker, remember?
Seriously! George, has great as STAR WARS is and was for its time, you’ve milked this cow long and hard enough. Time to move on.
What ever happened to your long-awaited RED TAILS? Still in post-production?
How about fixing the STORY. ACTING. STORY. ACTING. STORY. ACTING. Lucas fooled us once. Not again. There’s only one real STAR WARS trilogy and it’s got Ford, Fisher and Hammil.
I think the problem here is that George Lucas has always been the only one who is happy with the results of Episode I, and the rest of his terrible prequel saga.
I concur!
Episode III was very good. The problem was the story arc. I & II were pretty much set up for III. The original trilogy was a prototypical hero’s journey. Watching the emperor setting up his takeover isn’t that exciting until he brings it about.
If that’s true, how did it go on to gross over a billion dollars? I get that you and many others didn’t like it, but to say that Lucas was the only one happy with it is simply false.
I actually like the first movie more than Episode II. And I enjoyed the hell out of Episode III. And no, I’m not 9-years-old.
Yaaaaaawn. Who cares? 3D will be as played out as this dated franchise by the time it’s released.
Talking about beating a dead horse.
God the thought of sitting through THAT movie again, well I just threw up in my mouth A LOT.
Now Empire Strikes Back in 3-D, ok I’m game for that. But any of the second generation garbage is just that, garbage.
Wouldn’t this be beating a dead horse, reanimating the horse, killing it again and then beating it?
Fantastic
By “time to do it right” does Lucas mean completely starting over at the development stage?
If not, PASS.
No way I’m sitting through any Star Wars film again.
I thought Phantom Menace was pretty good!
except for the unnecessarily long pod race crap!
I shall translate what Lucas really means here. When he says:
“It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology, the resources and the time to do this right,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas. “I’m very happy with the results I’ve been seeing on Episode I.”
What he really means is:
“It’s incredibly important to me that we make more money off of this lousy movie, the money is the only thing I care about now,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas. “I’m very happy with the financial projections I’ve seen and the audience research because there are millions of morons who will spend their hard-earned money on seeing Episode I again only this time in 3D then I can be even richer and get even fatter and even lazier. I love money!”
You’re WAAAAAAY off-point. It’s not about money anymore. Lucas is worth over a billion dollars with more coming in every day from toys and video games, ect-ect…
He never has to work another day in his life if he doesn’t want to.
What’s going on is, he’s delusional. Lucas ACTUALLY believes people want to see Episode 1 again and that they’re excited to see it in 3-D.
None of his friends have the courage to tell him his choices and vision is slop now. That happens when you become successful.
Jar Jar coming at you in 3D? Apparently the prequels can get worse.
Dear George – I was excited to see the blue ray box set of the original (and only, for me) trilogy for sale until I noticed that you are only releasing the “remastered” (translation – butchered) version. No sale here. Han shoots first.
Yes, Jar Jar Binks in 3D I know I’m stoked!
How about instead of spending the money on 3D conversions, he spends it on giving the unaltered theatrical editions of the original trilogy the remastering of audio and video quality they deserve, to be put on Blu-Ray?
This was answered on the previous Star Wars 3D talkback, apparently Lucas has to share that money with his ex-wife, if he does anything new with the original trilogy that he made when he was married to her she gets half of any new profits, which is why he won’t try to make any more money from the old films.
George, the problem is that the damn characters are to 1 dimensional! No 3D is going to change that!!!!
I don’t even enjoy watching quality films in 3D. Why would I want to suffer through this pile of crap?
You guys are stupid. Quit talking shit. Star wars in the business.
I personally don’t know anyone who liked The Phantom Menace – I mean, not one person, and this included some distant acquaintances. I’d be curious to see how many people actually show up for the theatrical release.
While the original films are part of my core DNA having grown up on them, the recent trilogy was so underwhelming and mindbogglingly blasphemous (ruining the concept of the Force), that I must say it:
Of all the properties in Hollywood being ‘rebooted’, maybe Star Wars needs it more than anything, if ONLY because of the more recent movies.
George, use all the money…hire INCREDIBLE writers, VISIONARY directors, and for everything that is Star Wars Holy, FIRE all the YES MEN surrounding you. When you decide you want to introduce Jar Jar’s cousin, you need someone to tell you point blank: “No, George. That’s a TERRIBLE idea. Now go to your study and work on THX1139 while we kick ass on this reboot”.
Are people even going to go see this?
The Menace was never Phantom and this proves it.
Re-release? Are you fking kidding me? Is Lucas totally out of ideas? Judging by Indy and the glass skull (or whatever the title was) I say yes. Everyone should boycott this atrocity.
oh yeah…NO STAR WARS REBOOTS!! Lucas had his chance and he blew it. The last star wars films should exist as a reminder of how an awesome, multi-million dollar story can be yanked from the hallowed halls of fan-ticipation and dragged through the gutters of “what the fk is going on here.” I don’t think Lucas would let any other director put a hand on the franchise anyway. He definitely shouldn’t be allowed to do the reboot. We should pass a law against it.
The haters can hate all they want, but judged on THEIR OWN TERMS they were pretty good films for children. I can’t wait to see them in 3D. And ALL of you will be buying tickets to see eps 4 -6 in 3D, making Lucas even more rich! he has the last laugh on you.
George…George is that you???
Ah, all the haters are out in full force today. If all of you hate Star Wars and George Lucas so much, why read the article? Why comment? You are all the type that bash Star Wars fans for being nerds with no life, yet here you are posting on an article about Star Wars, just to say you will never go see it. Fine, then don’t. But tens of thousands of Star Wars fans will go to see this and do love the entire saga. So when the 3d comes out and it makes a lot of money, it will give all you envious losers another chance to rant about Lucas.
Thank you George Lucas!
You seem to have missed the point. Many of the comments here are not from Star Wars haters at all, quite the opposite. I am a Star Wars nerd as you put it and feel the same way as many others – that I have spent my last dollar on anything Star Wars having been a dedicated fan/customer.
That’s the question…will anybody rush out to see this?
And in the news, Recently George Lucas was on the USC campus signing autographs at his leisure and giving another large grant for his self important ego. The following conversation was heard,
“Mr Lucas, my parents truly enjoyed Episode 3 and 4 of your Star Wars saga.”
“Thank you young padawan”
“Um, Mr. Lucas, you do realize it is fiction.”
“Pardon me young man do you know who I am!”
“Yeah, actually now that I think about it, The Phantom Menace was pretty much a piece of shit.”
“You can’t talk to me like that, I can have you removed from the school.”
“Ok, The Phantom Menace was a piece of shit, sir.”
“This isn’t the class your looking for.”
“Dude, You’d have more luck with a vulcan sleeper hold then that jedi mind trick bullshit. Go play with your Howard the duck statue.”
“I am a genius, I am a genius, I am a genius.”
To this Mr. Lucas starting feverishly signing autographs and then pulled out his light saber and started hacking at the students. Several students received bruises from his outburst.
Sadly, security was called in to calm the situation. Mr. Lucas then attempted to jump over them and pull their weapons to him with his outstretched hand, Instead, he jumped off a sofa, tripped over his toy saber upon landing and inadvertently landed on a young student in a motorized wheelchair. The student reacted by charging his chair forward driving Mr. Lucas through a plate glass window.
Mr. Lucas was taken to the hospital for several cuts and bruises and the students attacked are pressing charges.
Pardon, “you’re looking for.”
