UPDATE: TV Land just officially announced the series pickups of Fran Drescher’s Happily Divorced; Mark Reisman’s project, now called The Exes; and the second-season renewal of Retired at 35. As expected, the orders for Happily Divorced and The Exes are for 10 episodes each. Happily Divorced will premiere June 15, paired with Hot In Cleveland, while The Exes will launch next winter alongside the second season of Retired at 35.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE: It looks like that for a second consecutive time, TV Land will pick up two new comedy series. As the network is finalizing the series order to the Fran Drescher sitcom Happily Divorced, I hear the cable network is also closing in on a series pickup for the untitled Mark Reisman project (aka Ex Men). Both shows are expected to receive 10-episode orders. The Reisman comedy revolves around three divorced guys (David Alan Basche, Donald Faison, Wayne Knight) who live in an apartment building where their landlord is their sexy female divorce attorney (Kristen Johnston).
Fifteen months ago, TV Land ordered its first two scripted pilots, sitcoms Hot In Cleveland and Retired at 35, both of which went to series. Hot In Cleveland has already been renewed for a third season, with a second-season pickup for Retired at 35 also likely. Last fall, TV Land greenlighted three pilots, Happily Divorced, the Mark Reisman project as well a sitcom from comedy writer Terri Minsky. Word is the last one may not be going forward.

I don’t know if I like the change happening at TV Land. I like Donald Faison, Wayne Knight & Kristen Johnston, but I think I’d rather watch reruns of classic shows unless this show surpasses the on-the-cheap feel of “Cleveland” and “53.” I positively have no interest in any Drescher series, old or new.
this is HUGE, and GREAT for scripted tv. Too bad the WGA caved and fucked over basic cable residuals.
I’m a fan of TVLand’s approach — traditional situation comedies with appealing stars — but I’ve been disappointed by flagship “Hot in Cleveland” this year. The scripts seem poorly crafted, although the appealing actors do their best to make it work.
We need another channel then that sticks with the retro tv format instead of new stuff most people could give a crap about. Sorry, but people tune in to the few channels like TVLand for a nice trip back to the old shows. Is it really that hard to stick with that format and still maintain advetiser revenue without having to create NEW shows???
Well I loved the premise behind Retired at 35, I was really disappointed by its execution. If it doesn’t improve in its second season I’ll probably start watching it but the show does have its fun moments.
I’m just surprised TVLand doesn’t employ the TBS method of picking up there sitcoms. You know, the 10 episode initial “test run” followed by a 90 episode pick up to ensure it makes it into syndication. I mean TVLand’s only going to benefit in the longrun by having more eps of there shows completed…
And, just to make this last point clear, I’m disappointed that Rip City Cola isn’t happening anymore, I was hoping they’d pick up the trifecta of pilots. I guess they’ll only be picking up two shows per year from now on.
This is really depressing. I loved the fact that TV Land was trying to bring back old school sitcoms but do they all have to be about divorce! Rip City has the potential to be like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and instead all of TV Land’s new programming is going to be about divorced people dealing with the fact that they’re divorced? I know their demographic is people in their 40s but c’mon, even though a lot of us are divorced we still like to branch out with our TV shows.
Damn how bad was the Christine Taylor pilot that they wouldn’t pick it up. It had an appealing cast. Was the execution that bad?
Love Mark Reisman and this cast. Everyone in it is fairly hilarious.
Lucky for me I live in Chicago where we have MeTV, MeTOO, THIS and Antenna TV for retro TV shows and movies. I gave up on Nick at Nite/TV Land years ago.
That said I did like “Hot in Cleveland.”
And Kristen Johnson is tall, funny and SEXY.
Yum.
Count me among those who hope “Rip City” isn’t dead. The script was a delight — funny and warm and interesting. And the cast sounded terrific. Seemed like a great companion to “Hot in Cleveland.”
