Sony Pictures has brought in David Koepp to do several weeks of work on the script of Men in Black III, the film that took a production hiatus and starts up again March 28. The picture still has to shoot the time travel sequence of a sequel that sends Will Smith’s Agent J back to 1969, with Josh Brolin playing a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K character, and Alice Eve playing the younger Emma Thompson (she’s the head of the Agency). Koepp has been a reliable writer on such Sony tent poles as Spider-Man and Angels & Demons. He’s repped by CAA and attorney David Fox. Sony has kept a skeleton staff in place while they work out the bug of the script, but the studio is adamant they had time, they like the footage they’ve seen, and that director Barry Sonnenfeld will deliver for its May 25, 2012 release date.

MEN IN BLACK III: TRAINWRECK
Is this a remake of “Unstoppable”?
Oddly enough, the fact that they are actually taking the time to fix things gives me hope this could be a good, fun movie. Usually for a pre-sold, blockbuster franchise they would just push on through without worrying about the script, *cough* Iron Man 2 *cough*.
10 yrs olds make coughing jokes like this.
Are the characters that old?Josh Brolin is 43 and Alice Eve is 29 and they’re playing Tommy Lee Jones’ and Emma Thompsons’ characters over 40 years in the past?
I think it will recoup. Love it or hate it it’s an established “brand” and that seems to be all that matters these days. No one minds until they’re not the beneficiary of a system that rewards gimmicks and “relationships” above all. Business as usual.
What happened to Will Smith’s career? For a while it looked like he wanted to be a serious thesp, but that went out of the window with the groan-inducing Hancock, and now he’s making the second sequel to a sci-fi comedy fluff piece made almost 15 years ago. Either he’s desperate for the money or all the serious roles are passing him by as directors realize he’s yesterday’s news.
I liked Hancock but you’ve made a good point. What’s he been doing for the last few years?
Honestly, all I want is for it to be better than MIB2 at this point. That’s all I ask.
Talk about a disaster in the making. Most movies with script problems half way through shooting usually end up in the dust-bin of history as pure trash. This seems to be headed that way too.
MIBIII is Amy Pascal’s Waterloo/Stalingrad. If this tanks she’d be insane to think that Will, Spielberg and Sonnenfeld won’t throw her under the bus. There was bad thinking that lead to this INCOMPLETE script getting fully funded, and rightly, the exec in charge should pay the price.
Will Smith movies don’t bomb. You’ve gotta go all the way back to Wild Wild West to even sniff a bomb and I strongly doubt he’d let anything ever suck that badly ever again.
168mil in WW box office for SEVEN POUNDS didn’t exactly have execs dancing in the street.
There’s nearly a four year gap between that and MIB3. I hope Smith’s fans still remember him.
Thank God! Koepp rules. Etan had written one helluva hot mess of a script. Why on earth did Sony hire him to begin with boggles my mind.
A “younger” Tommy Lee Jones and no one thought to see what Josh Hartnett was up to?
I don’t think he would work, as they were looking for an actor to match Jones, physically.Tommy Lee Jones is 5’10.Josh Brolin is also 5’10.Josh Hartnett is 6’3.He’s much too tall to play a younger Jones.
Will Smith is 6’2 and noticeably taller than Jones.Josh Hartnett is an inch taller than Smith, and almost half a foot taller than Jones. The height difference between Agent J and Old K/Young K would be too noticeable.
MIB with less Tommy Lee Jones is something I’m not looking forward to.
Sonnenfeld and “Men In Black III” = Landis and “Beverly Hills Cop 3?”
As long as they keep Will Smith’s trademarked quotes from the first two movies: “Get off my planet!” from MIB 1 and “I make this look good!” from MIB 2.
No Rip Torn? That really blows.
After that horrible scene in MIIB where he bicycle kicks some alien like Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat, I’m sure he’s not keen to return.
MIB I failed a cohesive 3 act structure, ended abruptly, and offered little to remember other than the intergalactic TSA terminal, D’Onofrio as the villain, and David Cross’s cameo. Obviously the BK cups are driving the franchise.
@wiki wiki you couldn’t be more tragically off, Will Smith desperate for money ? You may not like the guy but his track record is remarkable, he’s far from yesterday’s news.
I agree this is probably a good sign that they wanted to strengthen the script before restarting again, regardless it’s an established brand and will do well whatever they do.
What planet do you live on? “What happened” to Will Smith is that after becoming the highest grossing star in box office history his family asked him to take time off. During this time off he made his young son into a budding movie star, and his daughter into a budding pop star who will be starring in the remake of Annie. I know snark is encouraged here but ignorance isn’t. Get your facts straight before you post recklessly.
yeah! what he said!
did that guy just say david koepp rules? …check imdb with the exception of carlitos way ..which was based on a book …that guy ruins movies
why would you think david koepp would make anything good …check him out on imdb dude…. its a mess
Koepp is insanely overrated. It’s close between he and Akiva when you’re trying to figure out which one is more overrated.
Oh Sony Pictures.
You so craaaaaaaazzzzy.
Why did this thing go on production hiatus ? Back when I did some extra work different color pages were a daily occurance, but production never stopped. If this “bug” stopped production it must have been a mean bastard. Did it go unseen all the way into filming ?
