EXCLUSIVE: After suing Paramount Pictures to recapture rights to his Harry Bosch crime novels The Black Ice and The Black Echo, Michael Connelly is in talks to make a new film alliance with Yellow Bird Films, the Swedish production company run by Soren Staermose and Ole Sondberg that generated the Stieg Larsson crime novel trilogy adaptations that started with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. They are also producing with Scott Rudin the Larsson adaptation for Sony Pictures that David Fincher is directing with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara starring.
In order to get those books out of Paramount, the deal comes with a provision they pay the studio $3 million for sitting on the franchise for close to two decades. Connelly is paying that money himself, illustrating that while crime doesn’t pay, writing about it sure does. The move comes just as another of his bestsellers, The Lincoln Lawyer, was released in film form with Matthew McConaughey starring. I’m told the deal being worked out for the Bosch series will make Connelly a partner in the film venture. This is his signature book series, revolving around Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective who has been the centerpiece of 16 novels that have sold millions of copies. The two books were optioned in 1992 and Connelly sued last year because when he attempted to recover rights to the stalled film project, he felt that Paramount loaded an unreasonable amount of development costs and interests onto the package, with little documentation to back it up. Connelly’s deals are made by Joel Gotler, who would not comment. UTA, which reps Yellow Bird, also had no comment.

It is amazing to me that Connelly has only had two films made of his writing (one of Clint Eastwood’s worst films and this new one).
What was Paramount thinking all these years?
Harry Bosch is a franchise acting role. We can only hope it is cast correctly…
I AGREE WITH YOU. CASTING IS IMPORTANT. MICKEY HALLER / MATTHEW M. I WOULD LIKE HARRY BOSCH TO BE THE FELLOW FROM MEMPHIS BEAT (TNT).
Eeeeks, to have a Connelly/Bosch project on the same page as a Patterson project?!
Not fair to Connelly, who DOES write his own books, and does a phenomenal job of it!
I’m a big fan of Connelly’s books, but I would much rather see Bosch translated to a kick ass cable series, much like Raylan Givens on Justified.
Long live Harry Bosch!!! Stuuuuuupid Paramount ex-ec-u-tives… Looks like Connelly has hooked up with some serious film makers and extricated an exciting character from Paramount’s hacks and Hollywood’s development hell. Heading off to see the Lincoln Lawyer tomorrow!
poor Connelly. but finally he won. I wish him the best.
the Paramount managment is a POS.
They should pay Connolly for sitting on his books. They took something that had a value off the market for 15 years – basically did nothing and they get paid for it? Nice deal.
Yay!
Of course, 20 years too late to cast William Petersen. Ah well.
That’s funny. I see a face like William Peterson for Bosch too. I never thought about him. I’ve thought about Russell Crowe. Why do I see chuncky people when Connelly thinks Harry is wiry and looks
like House? I guess it’s because he’s strong. But nobody sees House as packing a punch.
Michael Connelly should’ve let Hieronymus Bosch loose on the Paramount toads 20 years ago and the case would’ve been solved!
Well now this explains why Harry hasn’t been around! Love Michael Connelly’s novels. I have turned many friends on to his books. Exciting to see GREAT WRITING in the theaters again…not just fluff and blow up junk….awesome!
