EXCLUSIVE: After being dormant for the past 2 years, the Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay-produced drama project for HBO Cocaine Cowboys is shifting into high gear with a new writer. Michelle Ashford (The Pacific) has been tapped to write a new pilot script for the potential drama series inspired by Billy Corben’s 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys, about the rise of the cocaine trade and the resulting crime epidemic that swept Miami in the 1970s and 1980s. The HBO project, from Jerry Bruckheimer Television
and Warner Bros. Television, will not feature characters from the documentary but will borrow from its portrayal of the events of the illegal drug trade in Miami during that time frame. Corben and Alfred Spellman, partners in rakontur, which produced the documentary, are executive producing the HBO drama with Bruckheimer, Bay and Jonathan Littman. KristieAnne Reed is co-executive producing.
Bruckheimer and Bay, who have worked together on such feature blockbusters as Bad Boys, Armageddon and The Rock, originally set up Cocaine Cowboys at HBO in the spring of 2008. In December of that year, Cold Case creator Meredith Stiehm was brought in as a writer. For the project’s second incarnation, CAA-repped Ashford will write a brand new script.
This is Ashford’s fourth HBO gig in the past couple of years. She also wrote for the pay cable network’s Emmy-winning miniseries The Pacific and John Adams and penned the script for the 2008 HBO pilot Suburban Shootout directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. She earned an Emmy nomination for The Pacific and won a WGA Award for her work on the mini last month, shared with Robert Schenkkan.

If this is even a fraction as entertaining and informative as the doco, I’ll be ecstatic. A real eye-opening look at the enormous impact the narcotics trade had on South Florida in the 1970s and 80s.
Sounds great!!! What does this mean for Bay’s involvement in LOGJAMMERS???
Will this be a series, mini series or movie?
I’ve heard that this is being developed as a series.
Looking forward to this. I hope those hack execs at Bruckheimer don’t screw this up again. They’ve been turning out some real turds.
Bay has been off Logjammers for awhile. I just hope those hack execs at Bruckheimer don’t mess this up.
They’ve been putting out some consistent turds the last several years.
Bay has been on LOGJAMMERS for at least a year now. He wanted to go back to the original source material which is a big mistake. Also Hogans.
I heard from a friend that this is a very good documentary and recently watched it. I really do hope that they use more than just the title in their adaptation.
Is it the same project Stephen Levinson was attached? Sounds great, Miami is on a roll. Magic City and now this.
There are a lot of people in Hollywood right now passing this link around and laughing at that headline.
Could be the second coming of Miami Vice (classic TV show, not the POS movie version), this time R-rated. Will visually look cool with Bruckheimer/Bay aboard. Looking forward to this one.
I love Michelle Ashford. Good for her!
Her script revision notes are just going to be pictures of boobs, guns, and explosions.
I will be a full supporter of this. Maybe even get involved with the production or even be part of the cast. If any is shot in Miami. Love it!!!
