WASHINGTON — The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) today announced it has named former U.S. Senator Christopher J. Dodd as its new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Senator Dodd, who completed five terms in the United States Senate in January, will assume his new role on March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day).
“Senator Dodd is a battle-tested leader whose reputation as a strong leader on major issues facing this country has prepared him to serve as the Ambassador for the movie business. I, along with my colleagues, agree that he was worth the wait,” said Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairman Jim Gianopulos. He added, “We’re also grateful to Bob Pisano, who has done an excellent job of leading the MPAA during this transition period.”
Senator Dodd, a Democrat, represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 2011, where he was Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and the author of the historic Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Dodd also served as Acting-Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee during the 2009 consideration of the Health Care Reform Act. He also was a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has been widely respected as an effective lawmaker able to successfully reach across party lines.
“I am truly excited about representing the interests of one of the most creative and productive industries in America, not only in Washington but around the world,” said Senator Dodd. “The major motion picture studios consistently produce and distribute the most sought after and enjoyable entertainment on earth. Protecting this great American export will be my highest priority.”
“In several important ways, taking this step represents a continuation of my work in the Senate, from advancing the interests of children and families and creating and safeguarding American jobs to the protection of intellectual property and the expansion of international trade,” said Senator Dodd.
“It is also an honor to follow in the footsteps of Jack Valenti and Dan Glickman, both of whom I worked with on many occasions over the years. I look forward to working with the studios, the Association staff and all who work in our industry on the major issues facing it during this time of economic and technological challenge and global growth.”
“We conducted a thorough search to identify the very best individual to lead the MPAA,” said Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Lynton. “We’re convinced we have found that person in Chris Dodd. He is uniquely qualified to represent and protect our industry globally.”
“Chris Dodd not only has the political instincts and experience, but he’s the right person to lead the film industry through its toughest challenges regarding content protection and piracy on a domestic and global scale,” said Barry Meyer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros.
Alan Braverman, Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel at the Walt Disney Company and MPAA Search Committee Member added, “This is a critical time for the motion picture industry and we couldn’t be more pleased that Chris Dodd is leading our team. His vast experience in consensus-building and innovative approaches to resolving complex issues make him the ideal choice to lead this organization.”
Born in Willimantic, Connecticut, Senator Dodd attended Providence College, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, and then received his law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 1972. He served in the Connecticut National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves and practiced law in Connecticut before being elected to Congress in 1974. He also served as the General Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the re-election campaign of President William J. Clinton in 1995-1996. Senator Dodd and his wife, Jackie Clegg Dodd, have two daughters, Grace and Christina.

Some things go out with a whimper or a bang.
MPAA goes out with a DUD…oops, I mean a Dodd.
Mr. Dodd did not do a very good job protecting us from the banks all the years we were abused leading up to the financial collapse. Yes, he may just be the political animal the MPAA needs.
This is so ” low rent ” LA
LOL
This is a very poor decision by the studios, at a time when Hollywood is facing more challenges then ever they make a purely political hire. We need innovation, vision and energy, not old hat corrupt politics.
Chris Dodd is a criminal and a liar, and once again Hollywood plays favorites instead of bringing in the best. And they all sit around and wonder how to get teenagers back in seats. Another nail in the coffin of the studios, how stupid can these people be?!
I like the move… It speaks to the MPAA’s strategic approach moving forward. Partner with someone who can leverage existing relations and who knows where the bodies are.
C’mon, admit it:
The first two sentences “I like the move… It speaks to the MPAA’s strategic approach moving forward,” were clearly written by some kind of computer-generated corporate buzzword program. Right?
But the program obviously went awry in the last part: “Partner with someone who can leverage existing relations and who knows where the bodies are.”
For Dodd, the bodies will be at Charlie Sheen’s house.
And so far as “leverage existing relations”, I’d ask whose? This is a corrupt senator who’s never taken any interest in Hollywood, let alone be able to influence anyone anymore.
Very. Bad. Choice.
A nice guy, not known for hard work or being especially sharp. Typical of members of congress.
But he’s probably a better schmoozer than Glickman. He’s not accustomed to having bosses.
Bernie’s Corpse is a better Schmoozer than Glickman.
Does the job include a low interest sweetheart deal mortgage? If not, his deal was better as a Senator.
Much better than Glickman, who was a boob. in Congress, Dodd had real relationships, and had he beat Daschle for Majority Leader when they were both running, the Dems may have done a better job against the Bush machine in the aughts. The Countrywide stuff and his opposition to Elizabeth Warren were troubling, but for this job, he’ll have the passion and relationships that it requires, much more than Bob Kerrey would have.
“The countrywide stuff and his opposition to Elizabeth Warren were troubling”…
Troubling???? If you gloss over this as merely “troubling” I can’t imagine what you’d consider material. (And let’s not even start to discuss the tax breaks he engineered for the hedge fund industry, or the money he took from the financial lobbyists, or how his wife manages to sit on the boards of five health care fund providers.)
“…but for this job, he’ll have the passion and relationships it requires…”
His passion is for money. But please enlighten me: Where has he displayed any passion for the movie business, or any relevant ‘relationships’ that would be in our best interests?
Please — just one concrete example.
ditto ditto ditto
Protecting us from the banks??? HA – Who was protecting us FROM HIM and the whole CountryWIde scandal? How Dodd profited from the Housing Scandal? That is why he is NO LONGER in politics. Get educated.
Chris Dodd was voted by Judicial Watch of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” in 2008 and 2009 for his relationship with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and getting preferential treatment with Countrywide Financial. Glad to see he’s bringing his integrity to Hollywood.
Stop complaining! He’s a Lib…which means a ratings system overhaul will probably happen sooner rather than later!
Great. We hire a corrupt congressman who has always sold out to the highest bidder to represent us. Lots of integrity there.
On the other hand, I hear he’s going to save us money on hotels when he comes out here by staying at Charlie Sheen’s house.
I believe you, A producer. My first husband worked for Dodd and says he’s, to put it quaintly, a skirt chaser.
You seem to have misread his job. He’s working for the entrenched media, and the corporate interests of the entertainment industry. His job is to gladhand in DC, do the bidding of the industry, and not to stir up trouble.
(And you might want to do a little research on this — like what Jack Valenti said about home video recording in the 1980′s: “I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone.”)
The poster child of corruption.
An old white millionaire, battle tested in the arts of bribery, corruption and technological naivety, will now take the reins and lead us into the digital age.
This sounds like it will end well. Where can I pick up my “Media Consumption ID” before the line gets too big?
Amazing how this “Senator” who was one of the main forces behind the sub-prime collapse via Fannie & Freddie Mac, pumping billions and billions of tax-dollars into these failed programs even manages to see the light of day. Using him as a public face for the industry is like trying to put lips on a turd. It stinks no matter what.
You mean the subprime collapse that happened because the big banks sold crappy mortgages to people who couldn’t afford them, and then proceeded to slice and dice them up into derivatives that were worthless even though they were sold as if they were solid gold, at which point said mortgages went bust, and the economy collapsed? You mean THAT subprime collapse? Instead of the red herring Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac BS explanation you teabaggers are so fond of talking about endlessly because you don’t give a Flying F if the big banks run amok unregulated ruining the global economy?
Your Affirmative Action In Chief sued Citi Bank to force them to give bad loans to minorities when he was Senator from Illinois. But you sweet leftists never did any homework on Hussein so you wouldn’t know the facts of his heinous involvement in the sub prime debacle.
Your also so ignorant and uneducated you attack the banks and Wall Street, even though they are the ones that created Hollywood from the get go! What utopian money vomiting machine are you going to create to line your pockets with? Your all such a bunch of phony hypocrites.
Dude, you can’t see the forest for the trees. Or in your case, the truth for your dislike of the tea baggers.
Starting with Clinton, home ownership became the benchmark for Presidential success. Bush continued the policy. But the driving engine for the meltdown was the way Fannie/Freddie lowered their lending standards, whereupon the bankers gamed the system, the regulators got captured by the people they were supposedly regulating, and the whole thing went down in flames.
Ain’t nobody innocent here – there are as many villains on the left as on the right. And that includes Dodd, who was a key player in this.
So you can moan all you want about the bankers. The bottom line here is that now have one of the nation’s most corrupt Senators lobbying for Hollywood.
He and his wife are sleaze merchants, she was on the board of directors of AIG.
DC politics and now Hollywood – great places to practice the art of the “fail up.”
I’m surprised to see that there are no comments about Bob or Harvey Weinstein. I think this move is going to make the Weinstein brothers the most livid.
Are you kidding me? One of the architects of the financial collapse, who couldn’t survive a re-election challenge? Is Hollywood so blinded by its partisan political hatred that they are going to risk its future on someone like Dodd? I’m not a Republican by any stretch, but Good Lord, are the the players in Hollywood that completely brain damaged?
Amazing…the frothing, foaming libs are so quiet on this story….
I saw Carrie Fisher do her one-woman show “Wishful Drinking” at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut and she mentioned that she had f**ked (her word) Chris Dodd back in the day. It was hilarious!
