Remember Nailed, the film David O Russell helmed before he made the Oscar-nominated The Fighter? That picture, which endured a litany of production shutdowns before Russell finally exited because he couldn’t get the money for post-production, got a recruited screening last night at the Arclight Pasadena. The film became a symbol of the financial troubles that have plagued embattled financier/producer David Bergstein, and sure enough, I’m told the cast and filmmakers were left in the dark about it. I’ve gotten reports from the premises. The title wasn’t divulged on the invitation, but the invite played up that this was a movie made by Russell–who was remade into an Irishman. The invite described the film as “From David O’Russell, the Oscar-nominated director of The Fighter, Three Kings and Flirting with Disaster.” The pic stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan and Paul Reubens. It’s basically a satirical comedy about health care. A small town waitress (Biel) gets a nail lodged into her head, which prompts her to behave impulsively and often irrationally. She can’t afford to have the nail removed because she doesn’t have health care, and heads to DC where she develops a relationship with a congressman (Gyllenhaal). Her attempt to wage a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington-type campaign for health care reform is challenged by the nutty things she does because of her affliction. Now, Russell has shown a deft hand at this type of comedy in films like Flirting with Disaster. The trouble is, he washed his hands of the film last summer because of all the money problems, and I’m told that last night’s screening played like an assemblage of rough footage, without the nuance Russell would have injected had he finished.
The backers are going to shop the film for distribution, but it is obvious that Russell will do everything he can to appeal to the Directors Guild to remove his name. That was foreshadowed by his exit statement issued last summer: “Due to a variety of circumstances, I am no longer the writer-director of Nailed,” he said. “This has been a painful process for me. The multiple production delays and stoppages, which were caused by David Bergstein and preceded Ron Tutor’s direct involvement with me, have now spanned 2 years, and the circumstances under which the film would now be completed are much different on several fundamental levels than when we embarked several years ago. I, unfortunately, am no longer involved in the project and cannot call it ‘my’ film. I wish Ron Tutor well.”
Russell’s name was also on the questionnaires that followed the screening, as viewers were asked if his presence was the reason they came. His resurgence through The Fighter would make him a tremendous asset, particularly with that strong cast. It will be interesting to see how distributors will react to the film because of Russell’s estrangement, and all that has gone wrong with the picture.

Here’s an idea. Get O Russell enough money to finish the film properly before a test audience tells you that yes, the author of the work is a reason to view the work.
WINNER!

What a swell town.
Alan Smithee… Paging Alan Smithee…
Tony Kaye, anyone?
When’s the screening of “Black Water Transit”, David McBergstein?
Certainly after the premiere of Kenneth Lonnergan’s “Margaret”.
I was at that screening. I can’t say anything about the film however, just that I liked it.
Sucks for biel, I’ve heard she’s tremendous in this and this would open the door for her play more then girl with great tits roles.
did you ever see the illusionist? biel was brilliant
My understanding is that the most pivotal scene wasn’t even shot–the one where Biel gets the nail in her head. Am I incorrect?
With this A cast and what reads like a great story, it’s a shame that another studio couldn’t pick this up and release it, especially since they have the money for redo after Sandler/Aniston flops. Isn’t this the one that James Caan got all White Goddessy about and walked off?
Saw it. It’s unsalvagable, even with Russell. Tracey Morgan has some funny bits and Jake Gyllenhaal is surprisingly funny as a geek, but Jessica Biel is terrible.
He wrote it, it’s incredibly stupid, and when they shut it down they did his career a HUGE favor. It’s weird to see this apologia/spin after the fact. I’ve seen pieces of it, and it freakin blows. HUCKABEES redux, tho a different kind of awful.
He did not write it, Kristen Gore did.
He co-wrote it with Kristen. And people should stop blaming production shut downs and editing for the film–it was terrible to start with and no amount of reshooting and editing will fix it. David O. Russell knows this and that’s why he bailed.
I heard exactly the same….look at his history
In his illustrious 25 year career, this guy has directed a total of only 7 full length films (including one documentary), and one of the films (Nailed) was so bad that it was never finished or released despite being 95% completed (had it been half way decent another financier would have paid to have it finished, so don’t blame the lack of financing for its failure). He is very far from a box office sensation. And ask anyone involved in the first of his two commercial successes, and they will tell you it was the stellar cast of Three Kings that made it was it was, despite “O’Russell’s” temper tantrums and fighting on the set. As with Three Kings, the fact that The Fighter turned out pretty good is the result of an amazing cast (one of whom lived this film for a decade), not “O’Russell’s” efforts.
He is a B- talent and an F- human being. He should crawl back into the cesspool from whence he came.
“O’Russell” is a complete low life, physically fighting with one actor (Clooney) on set; having a complete melt down and screaming at Lily Tomlim over and over again, who was 65 years old at the time for God’s sake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMVILMo1Cq0); having actors quit in the middle of films he was directing; and the list goes on and on. And that is just on set. The stories of his off set behavior make his on set activities look like those of a choir boy. To the extent people know him, he is one of the most disliked people in Hollywood, and rightfully so. Only in Hollywood can such bad behavior be tolerated.
I was on the set of “Nailed.” I totally agree with every word of this post.
the real truth comes out. Everything that went wrong in hollywood has been David Bergsteins fault for the last three years. His fund went bankrupt. Blame the friggen economy. But everybody has joined that bandwagon of blaming him for everything.
Absolutely true. The guy got lucky with Fighter and is trying to bury this picture for good reason. He was high during most of the shoot and wants it to never be seen. He may be talented, but he’s a dirtbag.
Of course it was financing , he was screwing 3 films at the same time , didn’t pay crew or anyone below the line and he was doing his famous “bridge financing ” . This had nothing to do with Russel who by most accounts was not a problem and just kept going despite 5 forced shutdowns .
Huckabees redux? Count me in.
the pivotal, TITular scene was never filmed. The seventh union shut down was on one of the last two to three days of filming. IATSE, SAG, and other unions told their crews to pack it up and walk. The only ones left in the office after that day were teamsters, Travel people helping get it cleared out, and PA’s.
they needed at most a half day of filming. One good take, and it would have been done.
Instead, the local film industry was horribly damaged by the production’s poor fiscal management and inability to pay its bills.
There are almost no incentives left to film in SC, so no new projects go there. Nailed was the last nail in the coffin.
I watched the final weeks of this film being shot in Columbia, much of it from my bedroom window looking down from a high rise. Too bad they can’t get it together.
They actually did shoot the Nail in Head scene. It was in the movie… but it was really bad and needed to be reshot. The movie was pretty good.. it was refreshing.. just my opinion
I was wondering what happened with this movie. I live in Columbia Sc and worked at the hotel where the actors and production crew stayed while filming the movie. I found an orginal script to the movie in the garbage. I have kept it all these years and still have it. Interesting read….
Faith and begorrah!
My husband and daughter were extras in Nailed! I really wish they would finish the movie.
I was one of the many extras held hostage in the holding room on one of the final days of shooting; while everyone was packing up until money was wired to the set. I hope they finish the movie, and at least send it straight to DVD so we can get a copy of our performances.
People can say what they want. My husband was in the film. It really was a litany of shutdowns. Criticizing O’Russel will do you no good. He was fine as a director; pickier than most. The problem was the money would not come in, and the union of cameramen and actors were ordered home. They only had one more scene, in a restaurant, a significant scene to glue the whole thing together, that was never done. Rough cuts will tell you nothing about a film. Editing is everything. Throw out the bad, leave the good, add sounds, music, emotion, etc. There is no way a film is going to come across as it should, unfinished.
My daughter was an extra and I want to see it!!
If catherine keener is in the movie well it will suck for sure and good luck to find distribution
I was an extra in the movie and was in a good many scenes. I enjoyed being around the actors and other extras. The hours were long with one over-nighter. I wish it had been completed.
