NBC has picked up Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, a new hidden-camera comedy show hosted and executive produced by Betty White. The series of 12 half-hour episodes will be produced by Chris Coelen’s Kinetic Content.
Known throughout Europe as Benidorm Bastards, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers follows a band of seven senior citizens who make it their mission to play pranks on unsuspecting younger people. “Betty White is a comedic genius who escalates hilarity in any situation,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s EVP Alternative Programming. “Viewers will thoroughly enjoy watching her pull one over on the unsuspecting youth of America.”
Said White, “People have been telling me that I’m ‘Off My Rocker’ for years — now I can prove it.”
The deal reunites White with NBC, where The Golden Girls ran successfully for seven seasons. More recently, White’s hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live earned her an Emmy. White remains one of the busiest actresses in Hollywood. Having just turned 89, she continues to star on TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland, which has been picked up for a third season. In addition, her new book If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t) will be released May 3. The original series by Shelter in Belgium, Benidorm, swept the 2010 Rose d’Or Awards, winning the Best Comedy Award as well as the Golden Rose for Best Program of the entire competition. In addition, the show won Best Comedy Format at the 2010 FRAPA Format Awards. The NBC version, packed by APA, will be executive produced by White, Coelen, Kinetic’s Matilda Zoltowski and Shelter’s Tim Van Aelst.

I’m so sick of the Betty White crazy. She’s cute, she’s funny, she seems really nice. But if the SNL episode taught us anything it’s that she’s a one-note joke. And now they want her to hose PUNK’D? She’s a great supporting character but you can’t built a show around her.
I think you can build a show around her…but do we need to see more Betty White? Kinda in Betty White overdrive right now.
Maybe if the person who wrote this could spell, we would be able to understand their ranting about Betty White.

Alright Betty and NBC, you just took it too far. Although, I guess, since Betty White doesn’t have to worry about career longevity, she’s free to over-saturate the market.
I think the fact that she is 89 and still ever as popular is proof that she can carry a show. If I’m correct, she has won Emmies for “carrying a show” before. In all honesty, I don’t see how your comment makes sense. You can dislike her humour, but you can’t then outrule her altogether.
Gotta give her credit that she can keep her career in high gear. The number crunchers at nbc must know something that is lost on the rest of us.
I too am over the Betty White-mania. You know it’s a sad day for the culture when the hottest entertainer in America is an 80+ year old woman. That pretty much says all new stuff sucks. And that NBC is desperate if they’re greenlighting this thing.
No, it doesn’t say the new stuff sucks, it says that sometimes the culture actually has enough sense to keep appreciating a classic.
It also says a remarkable thing about aging–all of my grandparents were dead before age 80–Betty gives everyone hope! God Bless her, and I look forward to the Betty White 100th Birthday Special!

I think this is a brilliant idea. The 4 big networks are too afraid to put people over 41 on television. Betty White represents a generation even older than the baby boomers. We’re lucky to have such a talented, funny woman in our presence. There needs to be a break in the same, dull faces on television and she’s the perfect shot to get “new” energy going. She’s paid enough dues and continues to prove she’s funnier than some of our younger talent.
There is no such thing as too much Betty White. I hope while they were cutting this deal, they were planning an SNL return.

They should cast and crew every reality show with senior citizens. They don’t need health insurance because they’re on Medicare. Win win!
Can’t build a show around her? Is it going to compete with the hundreds of other shows anchored by a senior citizen? I know young is always better but most the top ten shows are heavily watched by older Americans who are desperately looking for shows that don’t depict them as two dimensional characters. And I definitely cannot see older Americans enjoying watching older Americans punking young adults. No, not at all. Because we all know that older Americans never ever complain about young people.
Yeah a one trick pony who has been in the industry for almost 60 years. Some people just can’t be happy for others.

If Betty White is a one trick pony then Martin Scorsese is a one good movie director.
White can not only carry a show on her shoulders, whenever she guest stars in an already good show she makes that one episode much better and makes the ratings skyrocket for that show.
It’s a sadder state for culture when Jersey Shore gets renewed for another season.
