EXCLUSIVE: The cast of the Adam Shankman-directed Rock of Ages continues to look better and better. Paul Giamatti is signing on to play the manager of the rock band headed by Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) in New Line’s adaptation of the Broadway stage musical. Giamatti just opened in Fox Searchlight’s Win Win, and won a Golden Globe for Barney’s Version. He’ll star in the HBO film playing Ben Bernanke in HBO’s Too Big To Fail. He just wrapped the George Clooney-directed The Ides of March. Giamatti’s not a singing virgin. He starred in the Bruce Paltrow-directed karaoke film Duets with Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. He’s repped by UTA and Kipperman Management.
Aside from Cruise and Giamatti, Rock of Ages has Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Julianne Hough. Shankman is courting Amy Adams for a key role.

Paul Giamatti is about as good as it gets when it comes to acting. He can only make this project even better…and, it will be further enhanced if Amy Adams signs on, too.
I wanted Anne Hathaway to star opposite Tom Cruise , because of the awkwardness of Anne having done that wickedly funny and brilliant impression of Katie Holmes on SNL . Plus, Hathaway has better singing chops than Amy Adams.
Giamatti was robbed of an Oscar nom this year for Barney’s Version. This guy continues to make interesting and entertaining career choices. This should be no exception. Strangely I find myself looking forward to a Tom Cruise movie…
I agree! This cast sounds outstanding. Even better if Amy comes on board. How fun!
Some are asking if Cruise is even relevant anymore, but unlike others I love the guy and he has nothing to prove. It’s very brave and fun seeing a huge star not being a slave to their image.
And no, I don’t work for him.
The casting for this film keeps getting better and better. I think it’s going to be a hoot.
Paul’s in it for the money. I don’t blame him.
Problem is, it’s a Tom Cruise musical movie.
Paul, years from now, you’ll still be cleaning shit off your shoes for walking on the Cruise movie set.
You couldn’t have picked a stinkier career move if you tried.
Tom Cruise is not even the lead.
Wow ! Why the strong hate for Tom Cruise ? Is Cruise that overwhelmingly difficult to work for or to work with ?
Cruise is the frontman of a rock band?
Do they know he’s 50?
Just told my grandmother and now she’s even more excited about this film!
Giamatti is better than this! I don’t know about this one.
Has Gwyneth sign on this film? I hope she joins.
Paul Giamatti was really good at the Rally to Restore Sanity. It was fun in DC! He’s a very tallented man! He’s on MythBusters doing his, “magic”. Doing a tv show and moves are alot of work. His nick-name is “Savage Adam”. People really love him! I liked him in “Sideways” but “Upsidedown and Backwards really sucked!
Really soon, Paul “Savage Adam” will go into Poltical Talk radio…
He’s in da workz 2 do a show called “Da Savage Nation”. He supports Oh…Bama… 2000,0000,000% Just look at the pic at the top^ many people get him confused with other famous peoples…
All in all I’g be happier with Constantine.
The Cpnstantine role has not been cast.
Oh, good there’s still hope. We should have at least one one good looking young rock star type.
Is there ANYBODY out there who’d still pay to see Tom Cruise at this point? Especially Tom Cruise singing? Yikes! jt, I don’t know about Cruise being difficult to work with other than him possibly trying to convert some co-stars to Scientology, but the guy’s day has come and gone. He’s a boring, manufactured Hollywood star who somehow managed being a top box-office star for 20 years. I think some women still like him because he represents the non-threatening, platonic male friend. You know, sort of like the gay/asexual male friend who women always feel comfortable with because they know he’ll never try anything.
I was thinking the same thing. Is the story about a washed up rocker looking back at his glory days and getting busy scoring discounts with his AARP card?
If only it weren’t for Tom Cruise (who is living proof that being a movie star doesn’t mean you are a good actor), I would really be looking forward to this film.
