A week ago, Terriers co-star Laura Allen got good news when she was cast in a supporting role on NBC’s drama pilot REM. Today, which happens to be her birthday, she got even better news – in a pilot rarity, she was bumped up to female lead of the project opposite Jason Isaacs. Meanwhile, Law & Order: SVU alumna Michaela McManus, who tested opposite Allen for the supporting role of Tara, has now been cast in that role.
REM, from creator/executive producer Kyle Killen and 20th TV, is described as an Inception-style thriller and centers on Detective Michael Britten (Isaacs), who wakes up after an accident to find he is living in two different realities, one in which he has killed his son Rex (Dylan Minnette) and one in which he has killed his wife Hannah (Allen) in a car accident. McManus will play Rex’s tennis coach, who has become his confidante in the wake of the recent loss of his mother.
Trying out Allen for the Hannah role was an idea of former 24 showrunner Howard Gordon, who serves as exec producer/showrunner on the REM pilot. After what was described as a “terrific read” with Isaacs this afternoon, Allen landed the part. The cast of the pilot, directed/exec produced by David Slade, is now complete. It includes Isaacs, Allen, Cherry Jones, Steve Harris, Wilmer Valderrama, Minnette and McManus. REM reunites Allen, repped by Gersh and Impression Entertainment, with 20th TV whose cable division produced Terriers. McManus, repped by UTA and Principal Entertainment, currently recurs on CW’s The Vampire Diaries.

Oh Christ, who cares? It’s freakin’ NBC. NOBODY CARES. Even the critically lauded shows like Community are rendered niche programs with small audiences because they’re on NBC. NBC is no longer a major network. Lots of viewers avoid it because Jay Leno is still there. Lots of people avoid it simply because of many of the shows suck.
Nellie, why do we have to keep reading NBC news on this site? None of these shows are going to amount to much of anything.
Yeah, but there’s a new sheriff in town named Bob Greenblatt who supports the creative people.
Laura Allen is a great choice for the lead. Michela McManus is not good though.
Very strong cast, the series is shaping up very nicely and I would be shocked if NBC didn’t pick it up.
What an amazing birthday present for Laura!! Happy Birthday girl!!
Laura Allen was fantastic on Terriers, an excellent series that ended way before its time. I say smart move on the part of REM’s execs. She’s fiercely talented.
Love Laura Allen. Fantastic actress.
If you don’t care, then why bother reading? Seriously do you have that little to do in life than complain about something you chose to do??
Okay, I give up. IS IT PRONOUNCED “Ar-ee-em” OR “rehm?!”
IF IT’S R.E.M., AS IN “RAPID EYE MOVEMENT” AND THE BAND, THEN WHY ARE THERE NO PERIODS?!!
WHERE ARE THE FRICKIN’ PERIODS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Except people often pronounce Raped Eye Movement as just “rehm”.
You could always ask Kyle killen, he’s on twitter killen8 i think is his username.
I love this! Kudos to the casting director and producers for thinking outside the box. Laura was so great on TERRIERS so I’m sure she’ll be great in this role, too!
Um tell that to poor Chad Hodge on Playboy.
Congratulations to one of the most talented
actresses!!! And congratulations to Howard Gordon and David Slade for recognizing Laura’s
talent. Good luck!!! I’ll be watching along with all the friends.
Laura Allen is a fantastic actress who deserves to be seen by more audiences. I’ll be so happy if she’s picked up for this role!!
Michaela has been killing it on Vampire Diaries and was incredible as a guest star on Castle. Good for her!
I have seen Dylan Minette in several TV shows and movies. He is a great young actor. Can’t wait to see the pilot!
I have been a Laura Allen fan for a long time – I am so thrilled that she got this break. I was sad when Terries was cancelled, so I will watch this new show, if for no other reason, just to see her. Hopefully it will be great!
