Just 5% of Britons think that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation should be allowed to wholly-own pay-TV giant BSkyB, according to a poll published this morning. Today marks the end of the public consultation period offered by UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt after he approved News Corp’s 100% takeover of Sky. But 64% of respondents to the YouGov survey said that the merger will give News Corp and Murdoch too much power over the media. And 60% of those polled said that Murdoch already has too much influence on British politics. Just over half the respondents thought the government has not been neutral over the BSkyB deal. The poll, commissioned by New York-based online activist Avaaz, surveyed a total of 2,295 British adults. Alice Jay, campaign director of Avaaz, said: “The deal gives one man the keys to the media kingdom. Rupert Murdoch’s so-called ‘safeguards’ of BSkyB’s independence are about as reliable as a British airport in a blizzard.” News Corporation declined to comment. Nearly 370,000 people worldwide have signed Avaaz’s online petition, which describes the Murdoch media empire as having “a global record of undermining democratic government and promoting division, intolerance and war”. Almost 70,000 people have signed the UK version of the petition.

The masses are so jealous of rich people’s accomplishments. Sad.
Hilarious!
Lol. It’s maybe because they know any news channel run under News Corporation has no journalistic integrity.
Perhaps the Brits just get it. Having 1 guy owning every source of news is a bad thing. Anyway, theres no need for another FOX News anywhere in the world. Your’s is despicable enough. Morally hollow. Keep it. Please.
When your only focus is money, you can’t be for free speech.
Check your Massengill products at the door, Janet.
That is such a stupid comment. This has nothing to do with wealthy people. This simply has to do with an ugly ugly man who wants to rule people’s minds and dumb down the entire political discourse.
He should be vehemently opposed!
He should be stopped.
i hope the UK will have it’s own version of FOXNEWS.
We do, its called the Daily Mail!…
Oh Janet, you utter cretin. In Britain we still have the concept of an independent, unbiased broadcaster in the form of the BBC – funded by the licence fee which everyone who owns a TV pays, it makes for high quality, even popular programming and a fantastic news operation employing journalists who don’t have to answer to a mogul. That is why so many Brits, rich and poor, from all sides of the political spectrum, oppose the Murdoch deal.
Sorry, was that all a bit complicated for you? Would you like me to send you some nice pictures instead, perhaps narrated by Glenn Beck? Moron.
For the world to survive, it must get rid of the Murdochs.
It’s nice to see that Brits have much more intelligence than that Nation of loons called America.
I’m sorry, but I wjust do not understand what has happened to people today. If people in Britain don’t like/trust/want B-Sky-B, then how about you DON’T WATCH IT! If people in the U.S. don’t like/trust/want Fox News, then DON’T WATCH IT! If no one watches, it won’t be worth anything to anyone! A media outlet has no power except the power people give it by listening. When the hell did we as a country or as a world for that matter, decide that the best way to maintain “free speech” was to quash everyone who doesn’t agree with your viewpoint. How about the old adage “I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” DAMN!
I think you are mistaken. BSkyB is public satellite broadcasting company not a network station. So your comparison to people not watching FOX News doesn’t make sense. It’s like comparing Comcast or AT&T’s U-Verse to let say NBC.
Yes, B-Sky-B is a Pay TV Satellite Service, like DirectTV. But the root issue that the British people and press are complaining about are not that Murdoch will change or affect the entertainment, sports, or kids programming on the service. What the British press and politicians are up in arms about is what Murdoch’s influence will become on the Sky News Channel on B-Sky-B. That is what this is all about. Just like everyone is up in arms about Fox News in the U.S. As you can see in the London newspaper The Guardian:
News Corp’s takeover of Sky, will draw attention to the possibility of the news operations working increasingly closely together – with the same management structure, and collaborating on multimedia news – so that “progressively News International papers and BSkyB channels, particularly Sky News, may merge into one stream of fact and opinion”.
Capice?
First off, it’s funny to see a conservative (I would guess) quoting Voltaire. Second, it’s not really in society’s best interests to have giant, pervasive media centers feeding the flames of nationalism and racism. Here’s another Voltaire quote you’re not going to like nearly as much: “Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices.”
Guess what … all Fox Channels of any kind are blocked in my house … I am a brit living in the US and I would be totally appalled if this evil scum was given any more power than he already has. You’re damn right I don’t watch any of Murdoch’s channels or read any of his unspeakable publications.
Thank goodness us Brits know a phony when we see one. Get real … can’t you see the damage this man has already done???
Hey Anonymous, Wake the hell up! If one person owns all the media outlets, you don’t have much choice on what to watch and not watch. You talk about quashing free speech, how many free voices do you think you’ll hear if one guy monopolizes all the media. Think about it. DAMN!
First, anytime someone doesn’t agree with another person’s opinions, intellectually challenged people will immediate attack and fall back on labelling someone. For your information, I voted for President Obama.
“Everyone hears only what he understands.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Second, political bias has nothing to do with what I said. No matter what side of the aisle you are on, you should want to hear everyone’s point of view. Stop trying to quash whatever version of the world you don’t want.
“Hear one side and you will be in the dark. Hear both and all will be clear.” Lord Chesterfield
Third, as to one person owning all the media outlets, well then I will remind each and everyone of you of Howard Beale’s speech in “Network”, which is becoming more and more true with each and every passing day:
You’re never going to get any truth from us. We’ll tell you anything you want to hear; we lie like hell. We’ll tell you any shit you want to hear. We deal in illusions, man! None of it is true! But you people sit there, day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds… We’re all you know. You’re beginning to believe the illusions we’re spinning here. You’re beginning to think that the tube is reality, and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you! You dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even *think* like the tube! This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God’s name, you people are the real thing! *WE* are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off!
for me it’s either defund the leftwing BBC (NPR it!), or create a competitor that will rival the propaganda machine. I hope the murdoch bskyb deal gets approved as soon as possible.
I agree with anonymous on the point that we give Murdoch’s news networks power if we watch them but Murdoch can’t be allowed to keep amassing power like this. His is an agenda if hare and intolerance and with each piece of property he buys he grows in power. I for one won’t shed a tear when the old turd finally croaks is all I’m saying.
