EXCLUSIVE: In what shapes up as his first feature project after leaving The Office, Steve Carell will star in Seeking A Friend For The End of The World. The film marks the directorial debut of its screenwriter, Lorene Scafaria. Keira Knightley is in negotiations for the female lead. Mandate Pictures and Indian Paintbrush will co-finance and production begins in May. The film takes place at a time when mankind is forced to absorb the fact that an incoming asteroid will end humanity. Carell plays a man suddenly alone when his wife leaves in a panic. His high school sweetheart writes him saying she wants to be with him when the world stops. His neighbor (Knightley) accompanies him on the road trip as love blooms at the worst possible time. Despite the doomsday climax, the film has a somewhat comic and romantic tone.
Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Joy Gorman will produce with Steven Rales and Mark Roybal from Indian Paintbrush. Mandate’s Nathan Kahane and Nicole Brown will be exec producers. It is the second collaboration between Mandate and Indian Paintbrush: they recently wrapped the Jason Reitman-directed Young Adult, which was scripted by Diablo Cody and stars Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. Paramount will release the film.
Scafaria, best known for scripting Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, drew strong interest from a number of actors and actresses who met with her about making the film. She sparked to Carell and Knightley. Several distributors are interested, but it’s unclear if the financiers will make a deal before the film is shot. The package was put together by WME, which reps Carell (with Media Four), Knightley (with United Agents) and Scafaria (with Anonymous Content).

What a great headline. At first glance I thought you meant Carell was talking about if his career was over after The Office like Knightley’s washed-up (well, at least box office wise, not critically) after leaving Pirates….
I need a gps device to get through that plot.
Knightly washed up? What are you smoking? I’m guessing her W-2′s (or English equivalent) might have slightly higher numbers than yours. Maybe you’d think her more successful if she signed on to a bunch of Transformers sequels.
I agree, Kiera was wonderful when she used to play Pikachu in those Pokemon movies
No way!! Pikachu is a far better actor than Knightly will ever be
I agree: Kiera was brilliant when she used to play Pikachu in those Pokemon movies!!
P.S. Definition of washed up= No one will hire you and you’ve run out of money. Knightly does not fall into either category.
Scafaria is incredibly talented. So excited for this one.
She’s written about 5 scripts, and they’ve all been quite weak. She gets hired because Nick and Nora’s did well at the box office. It was a pretty empty script/film. It had one good line in it, the goody bag at your pity party bit.
Diablo Cody is still getting work?
Dear Deadline, please post a picture of Lorene, she’s hot. Thanks.
Second!!
Anonymous has been killing it lately. They have good taste.

Keira Knightley washed-up ? The same Keira Knightley who has JUST received rave reviews for her West End performance (potential Lawrence Olivier Award / nomination), is the female lead in the new Cronenberg-film (potential Oscar nomination/win), just debuted a very lucrative ad campaign (Chanel) and signed on to voice an iconic character in a TV-film ??? Not to mention she will play another iconic role (Anna Karenina – another potential Oscar-nod/win) AND do a Noah Baumbach-film in the near future.
Features, stage roles, TV, endorsement deals….that’s not washed-up, that’s called “in high-demand”…
There is a huge difference between not getting blockbuster roles and opting not to do blockbuster roles.
And for the record, she is paid top dollars for everything she does, she is one of the highest-paid actresses in the industry.
Thanks for posting, Keira.
@Phantom: Yes, yes & YES! No idea what the others here are talking about. Keira is a gold mine of entertainment – beautiful, funny, hard-working, beautiful(wait, did I say that already). But she’ll always be the Pirate King to me, and that’s why I totally get why she chose to leave the Pirates franchise. She has so many offers and chooses real work. So yeah, I’m a fan.
Love blooms between Carrell and Knightley?! Yuck, no thanks.
Perfect character/story for carrell’s one note!
Carrell & Knightly smacks of the same romantic chemistry as Carrell & Tina Fey in “Date Night”-ZERO! Tina and Steve as a romantic couple was as believable as Jen Aniston and any of her latest guy-du-jour.
Carrell lucked out with The Office playing a one-note smuck. ALL of his movies to date feature Carrell playing a one-note dull smuck. I guess that’s his acting range.
Knightly’s sort of the female version of Carrell-a one-note, zero sexual chemistry, female smuck. Twins separated at birth?
By the way, as IMDB notes of Steve, “Of Italian descent. His father, Edwin Caroselli, changed his name to Carell before Steven was born.”
His father was prescient. Cause what would Steve’s career have been had he remained with his father’s name, Steve Caroselli?
As far as “A Friend For The End of The World”, just a simple question: If it’s the end of the world, and there’s only time left for one last fling, gals-would you want to spend it with Carrell?, and guys-would you want to spend it with Knightley?
I sincerely doubt it!
Mandate & Indian, guys don’t want Knightley as their last fling, and women surely don’t want Carrell as their last fling.
So, exactly who’s going to fill up the seats for this Carrell-Knightley “Last Date Night”?
Steve Carrell is one of the nicest guys ever. He just rocks. Always root for him.
screenwriters directing their own movie? i think this will become more of a trend as studios try to cut costs. the most recent example is Massy Tadjedin who directed Last Night starring Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington.
Keira Knightley would never fall for Steve Carrell. He’s icky!
Lorene’s script A MIGHTY FLYNN is still one of my favorites. Super talented. Go Lorene! Love these new female directors cropping up.
A wonderful script with beautiful dialogue and a haunting coda.
Give it a rest, Lorene.
Sorry, not Lorene.
Jack, how were you able to read the script? Is there a link anywhere for download? Thanks!
