The Parents Television Council now is starting to criticize TV projects even before they have gotten on the air. The TV watch group, which recently waged a campaign against MTV’s racy new series Skins, today issued a blistering statement against ABC’s dramedy pilot Good Christian Bitches. “ABC’s decision is not only an affront to women, it blatantly attacks the world’s largest faith,” PTC president Tim Winter said. “The ‘b-word’ is toxic and is used to degrade, abuse, harass, bully and humiliate women. And the ‘Christian’ element only adds insult to injury. Would ABC even consider another faith to denigrate? Would they even consider a program title or a plot line based on ‘Bitches’ who were Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist? I suspect not, and I certainly hope not. So why the double standard?”
Good Christian Bitches is, of course, a working title for the pilot, which is based on Kim Gatlin’s book of the same name and will be changed if the project goes to series, as will be the moniker of another ABC pilot briefly mentioned in PTC’s statement, comedy Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23. Even as working titles, Winter finds those offensive. “Regardless of whether the title ultimately makes it to broadcast, ABC has publicly proclaimed its values and it has tarnished the Disney brand,” he said.
Described as a sexy soap, Good Christian Bitches stars Leslie Bibb as a mother of two and onetime “mean girl” in high school who returns home humbled following a scandalous divorce, hoping to get a second chance at winning over her old classmates.

The MSM is a social engineering tool and the question is, why are they doing this? Is it contempt for women? Why else would they use that word? Is it contempt for Christians? Why else would they use that word? Is it to pit people against each other, to foment more controversy and division? Is it to further desensitize the public? Are they trying to see what kind of response there will be when the words “Christian” and “b****es” are used together? All of these? I could easily type out the actual word, but just because THEY want this, I won’t. They want to see this word used and used lots.
I read an article like this and what strikes me is how many people here appear to have no problem with a title like “Good Christian B****es.” Ten, twenty years ago there would have been a real backlash on a board like this. Not any more. Is this because it is because “Christian” “b****es” are the subject of denigration?
The fact that “b***h” is now being pushed into public discourse with many people apparently having no problem with this says much about the direction of the country and how calloused the national psyche has become.

1. It is undeniable that a double standard is applied here. ABC would not have the balls to name a show “Good Muslim Bitches”, or “Good Jewish Bitches”
2. You are using a bogus argument if you are saying, it’s ok because nobody is making you watch it. This like saying it’s ok to have dealers selling crack or meth in front of your house because no one is making you buy any.
3. You are using false logic if you are saying you might as well not try to block that kind of show for your kids because they’ll just watch it at their friend’s house. That’s like saying you might as well smoke in your own house because your kids will get second hand smoke at their friends house.

Actually if you want to, you can. But so many television shows are presented in what used to be the ‘Family hours’. But as can be plainly seen, even at FOX (ie: Family Guy), that is no longer true. It’s just another case of the decline and fall of western cizilization. Without a parent looking over their shoulders every minute of the day, it is difficult to keep track of everything kids see.

The show could not possibly be more aptly-named. And please – most cable service providers have a way to completely block entire shows. While I agree with everything written in your post I think it is a mistake to assume groups like PTC are attempting to clean up television in order to avoid the inconvenience of seeking alternative entertainment.
I thought the primary issue was what we, as a society, are allowing to be pumped into millions of homes during Prime Time/Family Time. At one point do we, as a society, draw the line on what is appropriate and inappropriate because we all dependent on each other as a Nation ultimately. The collective matters, it is npot always simply an individual decision…there should be some across the board standards and values.
I mean, what’s the logical progression? When do we start televising State Penitentiary Executions at 7PM? Should we allow the mistreatment of certain ethnicities in the streets and if you disagree with that then you can simply avert your eyes? A society without high standards is one destined for implosion.
I realize there are age old philisophical arguments on “what determines high standards” and that it turns into a rabbit hole. But if you’re honest with yourself and not just looking to justify your point of view on a single topic or just trying to win an argument, then most of us can generally agree on what is right and what is wrong, what is appropriate and what is not. There’s plenty of cases for homosexuality as a personal choice for instance, which I would support personally. But most rational people would not condone teaching homosexuality as a way of life to six year old children in Kindergarten…it is inapproriate and not applicable at that age.
Ultimately it comes down to what most of us learned from our fathers; if it’s wrong you have an obligation to say or do something about it. That’s common sense and a basic human quality we all possess. The society that gives up on this basic tenet is doomed already.
I just spent a year (as of March 3rd) without TV. Best thing I ever did. My kids only watch movies we rent that I’m involved in picking out and the rest of the time we do things together. Broadcast TV just got to be too much. I still enjoy House and a few shows I can watch on Hulu etc. but the “always on” approach became too much. When I started having Internet blackouts recently they damn near killed me but now they have adjusted. You CAN live with out it.

You nailed it. If you care about your family you won’t allow any broadcast TV in your home. If you are tech savvy enough, you can screen all your sat channels but the educational ones, if you wanted to go that route.

No TV in my home for over 3 years (since the birth of my firstborn) and we haven’t even looked back.
We, too, cut the cable. You’ll save big bucks and get to choose what you want to watch. The silence without the tube on is absolutely golden – you actually talk to each other again. When I check into hotels, I still marvel at how I can surf through 50+ channels and find nothing I especially want to watch.
What’s more, TV that’s being broadcast at a set time is a dying technology from the fifties. Hence, DVRs were invented and now you can simply download shows. Like the music industry, the networks will have to adapt or face extinction. It’s still early, but remember these words.

John W: there are no educational channels, so if that ever was a reason to turn on the TV then it’s not anymore. Oh, maybe History International or NatGeo, but the original History Channel and Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel have no redeeming educational or entertainment value.
As for the Disney Channel, watch a child watching the Disney Channel. Look into his or her eyes, the window to the brain, and you can see the child becoming more and more stupid by the minute.

Every great country was doomed when decadence took over and decadence is taking over our society. Thanks to Liberal Hollywood, there are very few primetime shows before 10pm that my children can watch with me anymore. Foul language and T and A doesn’t make for good TV — it’s just lazy and sloppy writing.
I removed the antenna from our TV nearly 20 years ago. We only have content of our choice that plays on the VCR (remember what that is?) or the DVD player. We are willingly ignorant of all the filth spewed out by corrupt immoral people. I am a Christian, married for nearly 30 years to the same bride, who has raised 4 kids who are all doing extremely well out in the world. My wife and I, though not perfect, will live the rest of our lives together because we vowed, “Until death do we part.” We don’t need to be brainwashed by aimless perverse people who live to corrupt others and destroy families. The best thing thinking people can do for our country is unplug from the Main Stream Media and watch them go bankrupt for lack of advertising revenue.

Don’t get the hardcore right-wing Fox News confused with the broadcast Fox Network, which has ALWAYS aired stuff that offends conservatives( remember it’s first hit series, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN? Or even how heavily THE SIMPSONS was attacked by President Bush Sr.?)
Murdoch has always gone where the money is, and that means raunch in his entertainment programming and sanctimony in his “News” programming. Don’t insult conservatives by pretending this hypocrisy is acceptable because he’s pimping for the Republican Party.
With TiVO, and other “view later” technologies, there is no such thing as “Family Hour” any more.
Parents have to be aware that their kids will find alternate methods of viewing these shows. Either by defeating parental “locks” (often a simple 3 DIGIT “password” that a kid can defeat simply by repeated trial and error attempts) or viewing at a friend’s house or by sharing media/downloads.
In addition to blocking TV channels/times, parents need to look at their child’s computer access.
Many of these shows are also available for viewing on the family computer 24/7 via the internet at the channel’s website. There are usually either ZERO restrictions or there is a token viewing ‘lock’ like an on-screen button that says, “Click here ONLY if you are over 13″ or “To view this program click here only if you are over 13 years old”, or equivalent. Of course the child simply clicks on the “I am over 13″ button and starts watching the program.
I do want to make it clear I believe it is very much a PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to successfully manage this issue.
They need to educate their children, listen to their children, instill the appropriate values, and most importantly, parents need to get with the program and EDUCATE THEMSELVES regarding current cable/satellite TV and computer technology to understand the exposures, vulnerabilities, content/viewing control options (if any, and/or limitations of what access control options can and can’t do).
Yeah, my clicker works. We have a name for the clicker in our house. It’s called “name your poison”. It seems like no matter where you click to, it’s all crap and it’s all on a downward slope to the bottom of the barrel. So I’m not surprised at this ridiculously named program. If it is smutty, or sounds smutty, it sells. Well, not in this house. We watch movies of our choosing and are careful not to let the clicker take us where we don’t want to go. But I wish they didn’t have this kind of crap on tv. It’s just one more sign of the way society is heading. Right down the drain.
Yeah, if I could remove ABC from my cable line up that would happen. Unless and until we have ale’ cart channel selection of the channels we want (look out MTV, BET, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC) and I don’t have to “proxy-fund” these crummy channels to get the stuff I do want (ESPN), we have no recourse but to scream “bloody murder” in the loudest voice, in the smallest of halls! BOYCOTT ABC!

Thank you, Bob Weaver!!! I’ve never seen so many people so outraged over a word that has become as common in our speech these days as “yeah”. It’s on every television program that airs, just about, and I can assure you, more than half of the people complaining either use the word regularly or have used it before. The book does not attack Christians. It shines an unfavorable light on hypocrites and once people actually READ the book or SEE an episode, they get it. It’s not mocking God- it’s mocking those of us who LOVE GOD, but don’t always make the best choices to honor Him. When we fail to be good ambassadors for Christ, HE gets the blame, unfortunately, and that’s why the book was a good idea and has been so relatable to so many- we all either know one or have maybe even been one at one time or another. It’s NOT about the title of some silly book. Who gives a damn about the title of one out of the millions of books out there?
It’s about Hollywood’s double standards, and the fact that a major US TV network finds it perfectly acceptable to adapt this silly book’s title, “Good Christian Bitches”, as a working pilot name.
Look at my List. ABC would NEVER in a millions years allow as a working pilot name ANY one listed but “Christian”. Why so?
And to “MG”, when you adapt a book as the basis of a TV show, the network can name the TV pilot anything they want. Buying the property rights to a book does not in any way contractually obligate the network to use the book’s title as the name of the TV show that it’s based on.
So, ABC was free to dream up any name it wanted.
It went with the book’s title. Perhaps they wanted PR controversy. If so, it’s working. So even of they greenlight the show with a different name, say “Good Christian B%#*@!es”, they’ll get an initial ratings spike.
The main point remains: Why do TV networks feel free to link “Bitch” and “Christian”, while they’d NEVER do so for ANY other religion or ethnic group?

Yeah, I remember there being SO many shows with JAP in the title. And yes, if there were, I would object to that as well.
Why are Christians and fat people the only acceptable groups to mock? If you cannot put another enthnic or religious group’s name in the same place without offending, how can it be acceptable?
Is it really too much to ask that we not use ugly, denigrating terminology in the title of shows, especially on network television. Yes, we can pretty much prevent our kids from watching this garbage, but even litle kids pull up the programming guide on the televisions and are quite capable of reading titles. Why must we subject them to this type of language? My kids would get in trouble at school if they used that word.
Where does this pushing of the envelope stop? What will the show titles be in 5 more years? Who’s to say what’s too much? We could have shows like “Sh*t Happens” and “What the F**k”! Giving doesn’t make us Christian. Believing in Him is what makes us Christian. Giving is something we do because the Spirit propels us to out of our love for Him but it is all for Him as it was all His before we ever were anyway. I believe , through Jesus the Lord’s grace, that by giving we feel closer to Him as He gave His life so to should we give of ourselves for others but these are works and works are but filthy rags to God. It is a way to show to God that one does not covet the things of this earth for what good is it to store up cares and treasures of this world when this life is but a blink of an eye in our true existence so giving shows that one has that wisdom, through Jesus our savior for the glory belongs to Him, not Christians.

I read this pilot and it’s really good. The PTC needs to calm down. Yes, maybe change the “Bitches” part but the script is in no way degrading to women or Christians. It’s simply just a fun show about women who years out of the “mean girl-ness” of high school are still acting catty, holding on to old grudges. It also looks at faith and the absurdity of even the most Christ-like can sin with their actions. And like everyone is saying it’s the title of the darn book… sheesh.

I’m glad it’s just a working title, which I didn’t know before reading this article, because if it went to series with that name they’d lose so many viewers in the south it wouldn’t even be worth airing the pilot.
So the irony of the title is completely lost on everyone? The implicit ‘purity’ of the Christian faith juxtaposed with the implicit ‘uncleanliness’ of a ‘bitch’? It’s a broader conceit with a poetic title than merely an ‘attack’ on a religion or sex.
And am I the only person who here’s the implicit anti-Semitism in the argument that naming another religion in this context would ‘never’ happen? I believe the next (unwritten) line in that argument is: ‘…because the Jews run Hollywood.’
As if a goddamn television show is going to alter ANYONE’s opinion of women or religion.
But no, this is America, and we need to become more and more puritannical by the second. Let’s regress – it will disprove evolution!
Apparently, and most ironically, the PTC is too fat and lazy to talk to their children and make them understand anything. Easier to censor someone else, because GOD FORBID, someone else do something that makes you the least bit uncomfortable.

Don’t know whether you have noticed that this country is morally bankrupt. Puritanism could be used to clean up a lot of sleazy Pop Culture which sends the wrong message to kids. Parents keep your money,
because when you spend money on promoted products linked to Pop Culture icons, you are feeding a beast. That beast is consuming your children.
Amazing how you get it wrong. The words ” Jewish Bitches” or “Muslim Bitches” or any other ethno-religious bitches, would never be used in this context or any other context, because there is a notion about that everyone has the right to take offence to such things except Christians. And when Christians do take offence they are called intolerant or reactionary. If can’t see the double standard here I don’t know where you will see it.
But I’m not sure if this is a deliberate denigration of a faith or the result a deep seated sense of invulnerability ( also known as cocksure errogance) that comes from dealing with a faith that preaches forgiveness and long sufferage. It’s bizzare watching poeple gleefuly saw the branch they sit on.
I guess this effectively kills my shot of getting “Stinky Ghetto Hoes” picked up.

The real question is NOT whether ABC would substitute anotehr religion for Christian. Rather, would the the PTC stand up and demand that “Good Jewish/Muslim/Hindu/ Bitches” be taken off the air immediately?
Nope.
That’s not really the point. If the PTC is largely comprised of a Christian membership base, why not voice your complaints or concerns as one? To raise an issue for a race or religion doesn’t mean that you have to solve world peace in the process.

Actually, I think they would. It MIGHT have taken them longer to become aware of the situation, but once aware the actions likely would be similar.
This is terrible if they keep that shows name, Christians are the most put upon persecuted group in America. Won’t someone please think of the christians?
I guess this is what it felt like all those years Christians were persecuting everyone else.
