It is a sad day in Hollywood. Elizabeth Taylor’s publicist is telling news organizations that she has passed away at 79 from congestive heart failure. The British-born child star who grew up to become one of the world’s most famous actresses and great beauties and dedicated AIDS activists, whose complex personal life often overwhelmed her Oscar-winning professional career, was admitted last month to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for treatment of congestive heart failure.
Taylor missed a scheduled appearance at an amfAR benefit gala last month in New York, where she was to receive an award alongside President Bill Clinton and designer Diane von Furstenberg, celebrating their dedication to AIDS research. Elton john accepted the honor on her behalf and read a message from her: “I am there in spirit and I join you in saluting my fellow honorees and all these extraordinary leaders. I am inspired by their example, exhilarated by their vision, and encouraged by their compassion and love. And I love them in return.” Taylor appeared in more than 50 films and won Academy Awards for her performances in Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) as well as an Honorary Oscar in 1993 for her AIDS activism. She had eight marriages, most famously to the love of her life Hollywood producer Mike Todd and two times to actor Richard Burton.

RIP Miss Taylor. You’ll be missed. Actresses today don’t have your beauty or your acting abilities. when you were on , you were on.
Well said Joe. She will be sorely missed. I feel like I grew up with her and she has been a part of my forever.
She was truly one of Americas most beautiful women and it is very sad she is gone…God Bless Liz
May she rest in peace.
May she rest in peace, what a woman, and fantastic actress when given the right role, but most of all, a true movie star!
Liz rest in peace.
A few nights ago I watched one of her classic 50s movies:Giant with Rock Hudson and James Dean. I really like it and enjoyed this film. Liz from Giant,Cleopatra etc, to us film buffs your films enriched our lives.
Liz I’m going to miss u. Everyone is going to miss you.
truly truly sad
( wonderful actress and probably one of the most intriguing artist of the 20th century.
She was a complex, witty, passionate, and very classy lady. We’ll miss her.
so sad. the last great movie star. and a great great friend to those with HIV/AIDS. She will be missed. But boy, what a life!
For me, it was all about the headlines she attracted in her life. But her best movies, IMO were suddenly last summer with Monty Cliff, who I had a big crush on (too bad he was gay!), and National Velvet. She also made a TV movie, Hedda and Louella (Malice in Wonderland) that was quite enjoyable. But she was a tabloid favorite and I followed her many trials with Burton. What a couple!
how sad
the last great movie star
and a great humanitarian and friend to those with HIV/AIDS
But boy, what a life she had
Very sad news, but there is no need to crap on other current great movie stars here. I’d list them, but this is not the place.
One last word: She is our last “movie” star.
A true Goddess that will be captivating hearts of any age for centuries. An aggregate of beauty, talent and compassion who’s impact on the industry will safely ensure her transcendence into Hollywood legend.
R.I.P. Ms. Taylor.
Oh no! I gasped and felt a crushing pain in my heart when I saw this. I’d just finished Furious Love, the story of Elizabeth and Richard Burton’s romance and her life, a fabulous one well lived, was fresh in my thoughts.
Rest in peace.
The actress Katherine Hepburn was once asked, during an interview, who in Hollywood had a career on par with hers. She stunned the interviewer by replying without pause: Elizabeth Taylor. It was a a wise and telling reply because they’d both done Shakespeare, Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams? How many young to middle-career actresses in Hollywood today can lay claim to that?
Ms. Taylor was talented, beautiful (in her day) and iconic. Her fame was earned, unlike so many of the young people who grace our silver screens (or the boob tube) today. What a talent. What a life.
May she Rest In Peace.
Sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.

“How many young to middle-career actresses in Hollywood today can lay claim to that?”
But that is not the fault of current actresses, so much as it is an indictment of how much Hollywood has changed. And yet another reason Elizabeth Taylor was the last of her kind.
RIP, beautiful lady. Thank you and God bless you for your AIDs work.
Hey Bobby the Saint,
You and your friends were beautiful (in your day). What an asinine thing to say. You ain’t no saint, dweeb.
You’re the one calling other people names!
R.I.P. a true Hollywood legend. I was always taken by her beauty but didn’t rate her acting until I saw “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”. One of the finest performances ever
She was beautiful, sexy, funny, intelligent and a damn great actress. And worked so much since she was a little girl.
May she rest in peace.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for me. Dear Lord, I think she may have starting global warming she looked so stunningly hot in that film. And that sass and intelligence behind those eyes. Wowza.
No kidding and the very young me who saw the movie kept wondering – why isn’t Paul Newman jumping her? I was frustrated just watching her.
I worked with the great Paul Newman, and I once asked him about Elizabeth Taylor. He said, “what a great broad”..Great praise from Mr.Newman.
I second that, Perplexed.
As a precocious child, I remember being banished to my bedroom by my parents when ‘Cat’ had a late night run on television back in the ’70′s. True to form I hid out behind the couch, mesmerized by an intriguing story — Thank you, Mr. Williams — anchored by the talents of the dazzling Ms. Taylor, the dashing Paul Newman and the wonderfully bellicose Burl Ives as ‘Big Daddy’.
What a great film, a fantastic cast and an amazingly talented leading lady who also happened to be stunningly beautiful. I agree with the person above who mentioned that Elizabeth Taylor’s fame was earned. Here, here.
R.I.P., Ms. Taylor
A place in the sun is one of my all-time favorite movie.
“If someone’s dumb enough to offer me a million dollars to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.”
Oh Elizabeth, we will miss you! May you rest in Peace.
I worked with Elizabeth many years ago. It was a highlight of my career. She was a unique, balzy, generous intreaging woman with great stories. And men fell at her feet. Condolences to her family.
Hollywood has lost one of their last film icons.
She survived many a tabloid slam and proved herself the total sum of her many parts — both as an actress and later, as an AIDS activist.
Rest peacefully, Miss Elizabeth.
I won’t mourn her death as much as celebrate her life; she lived a long, full, rewarding life – what more can we ever ask. She leaves behind a legacy of advocacy and work that few try to live up to. Rest in Peace, Liz, you’ll be remembered.
The arguments our whole family used to have about her over the sunday papers with her wonderful performances and her sometimes not so wonderful movies, and those eyes, that voice, her jewels and her big life. She was part of the family and oh how very sad it is to lose her.
Last of the Mohicans.
having Angelina Jolie play her in cleopatra was the last straw, poor lady. A Place In The Sun was my favorite movie of hers. Finally she is with her love Mike Todd.
Angelina Jolie isn’t playing Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. She’s playing Cleopatra in Cleopatra.
You’re a moron.
Why don’t you quit the name calling and get back to class?
You only post to tell other people not to insult. Who are you, the hall monitor?
i thought the love of her life was richard burton
They don’t make them like that anymore “true movie star”. Simply a Legend. Rest In Peace, Ms Taylor and thanks for the memories.
You will always be in our hearts.
