On Thursday night, the American Idol episode that determined the show’s 13 finalists drew 25.3 million viewers and a 8.2/24 in adults 18-49, up a whopping 30% from the comparable night last year. After starting off down double digits from last season, the last one with star judge Simon Cowell, the singing competition has been consistently chipping away at last season’s ratings advantage, keeping its declines in the single digits and even slightly outperforming the corresponding 2010 episodes on a couple of occasions. “We have to pinch ourselves sometimes, I don’t think anybody expected it to go as well as it has,” Fox’s EVP program planning and research Preston Beckman said.
Indeed, the doomsday scenarios about Idol crashing and burning in the ratings without Simon did not materialize. Right now, Idol’s current tenth season is about even with Season 9 in total viewers and down moderate 7% in adults 18-49. After taking a dive in the ratings at the end of last season to the levels of its maiden summer cycle in 2002, could the veteran reality series reverse its down trend this year with a first season-to-season ratings bump since its ratings peaked in Season 5? “We feel that from this point forward we are tracking on par with where Idol was last year and maybe we could surprise ourselves and start to grow with the live shows,” Beckman said. Why is he so upbeat about the second half of Idol’s current season?
To understand that, we have to go back a year. Every season, as part its extensive Idol research, Fox conducts weekly online panels. A year ago, the ratings for the show’s early rounds were strong. But the research panels, which evaluate how interested and excited viewers are, were painting a different picture. “On every measure, the show was down dramatically,” Beckman said. Sure enough, “when we got to the completion rounds we saw the major decline of the ratings,” he added.
Things are very different this year, with the research pointing to excitement about the show coming back. Why?
First, the contestants. “We didn’t have showmen and showwomen last season,” Beckman said. “You never felt like you had a real competition.” This year, the feedback from viewers participating in the panels has been enthusiastic, with them saying that there are so many good singers going into the live shows that “we don’t know who is going to win.”
Secondly, the judges. Fox’s research last season showed that viewers hated having a four-person judging panel. The network took notice and reverted to a 3 judges. Then there was the summer judge panel overhaul prompted by the departures of Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres. “We re-imagined it a way that resonates with the audiences,” Beckman said. He said viewers polled in the fall were skeptical about new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. But the attitude has since changed. “Baseline research indicates that the skepticism has all gone away,” he said. “People feel that Steven and Jennifer are more invested in the kids, have a more nurturing attitude, and are feeling the music.”
Who gets the credit for what seems to be a successful reinvention of American Idol after 9 seasons and the departure of its signature star? Fox and the producers like to say it was a team effort and, in key aspects, it appears to be that way. For instance, I hear Tyler was a choice of Fox’s reality chief Mike Darnell who championed the Aerosmith frontman, while Lopez was suggested by American Idol creator/executive producer Simon Fuller. Fuller also is credited with bringing back Idol showrunner Nigel Lythgoe who has been overseeing a slew of rule changes this season that so far have largely worked.
The success of American Idol certainly puts more pressure on Cowell’s new singing reality series for Fox, The X Factor, which launches in the fall. At a recent appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show, Cowell was asked by host Jay Leno what he thought about Idol‘s ratings strength following his departure. “I’m thrilled,” Cowell said sarcastically. “You always want to leave show and it does better, right?,” adding, “I’m like that with my friends: do well, just don’t do that well.”

Simon Cowells X Factor is still a much better show than American Idol because you can have anyone over 12 plus bands appear. America is going to really like The X Factor.
Agree, better contestants.
X factor is the better show because of the different categories.I like the older and groups aspect. Just because your 15 doesn’t mean your the only one that can sing. But this season of idol is different , they actually have good singers. Thats a shock for Idol
I have watched the past five seasons of “Idol” and have some observations to make, informed or not.
One, Simon Cowell might have been present last season, but he often was caught on camera not listening, either to the contestants or his fellow judges. He appeared bored and aloof. I felt his on-air demeanor sometimes undermined the performers. True, when he cared enough, he gave a few of the singers some valuable advice. But when he made it clear he wasn’t coming back, I didn’t shed tears, nor did I fear for the ongoing success of the show.
As for the replacement judges, I had more trepidations about J-Lo than Steven Tyler. But they proved unfounded, because both have brought an authenticity to the judging process that has been in short supply for years. And because they demonstrate every time out that they are paying close attention to the singers, they have forced Randy Jackson to step up his game as well.
I agree that the level of talent this year far surpasses last year’s. So far, I am more invested than ever in the contest and there are a few performers who already show such promise that they will outshine previous winners, even if they fail to make it all the way to the end.
completely false. i use to be a j lo fan but not anymore. what whiny little bitch and wtf? so is tyler. what a little pussy who’s only looking to get a little pussy.
i stopped watching. especially after one of the best singers didn’t even quite make it.
i stand by what i’ve said over and over. when jennifer hudson appeared for the first time my first impression of her was, “star”. without question. no doubts. i can go on with each season that i’ve watched. i haven’t watched each season. it doesn’t take a lot to see who truly has STAR power!!!!
but the judges tend to act like complete idiots to save face
see ya AI
@George: Jennifer Hudson is a great singer and was a good performer on Idol, but at the end of the day, neither the judges nor AI executive booted her. It was the American public voting that ended her run. That’s the way it goes. At the end of the day, she got her shot at fame with Idol and I think she is probably not too upset with how it has turned out. Neither her nor Chris Daughtry won the show, but they are certainly “winners” from the experience and exposure.
Ah hah! My suspicions were right all along. Randy is the reason why everybody has been watching Idol all along. It was never Simon.
Much better contestants than in the last several years.
The only winners this show got were Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, a lot of people who came in second or lower have become stars, but only 2 actual American Idols have. The rest have pretty much been forgotten. If Kelly Clarkson hadn’t won the first year the show never would have made it past that first season. What happened to Guarini? He was supposedly just as good as Kelly. The true test is out in the real world.
Here’s my two cents:
Simon’s attitude (especially that last quote) says it all. After 10 seasons, watching people get put down gets old. This year the judges are much kinder and frankly it served the show. They are truly rooting for talent as opposed to knocking them down a peg. So they approved twice as many for Hollywood week; it led to a crackling show last Thursday. The suspense is on!
The new rhythm of Idol, format and judges (somewhat surprisingly) have improved the show.
The producers have done well reinventing the show…and, the ratings indicate this.
More importantly, the public actually chose the correct Top Ten finalists for a change, so something is going right.
I was as big a skeptic of American Idol being good this season as anyone.
I quit watching it last season because it was unwatchable. The talent was horrid. That guy who won was a lousy recording artist and the singer songwriter chick was nothing special at all. Can’t even remember anyone else on the show.
That said, I gave it a chance this season and I’m hooked again. Tyler has been excellent and J. Lo. is real. It’s refreshing to see both of them on this show.
Simon is not missed. While I enjoyed him crucifying a poor singer, he also had an obvious agenda and was pushing certain contestants over others.
The talent the show has assembled for the top 13 are very good. All of them can actually sing.
If they do away with the ridiculous theme nights and let these singers pick songs that suit them rather than shoe horn them into some stupid theme, the show will rebound in a big way this year.
Making R&B singers do country and country singers do disco is stunt garbage that should be eliminated. It’s Fear Factor TV which is putrid.
Let the contestants try to show America who they could be as artists if they got to pick their path and you’ll have a great show.
If they have a Disco night this year it will set the show back. You don’t need a whole night of Disco, Motown or Country. If someone wants to sing a song from those catalogues let it be their choice.
It’s been good TV this season. I hope they don’t blow with the theme park/cruise show cheesiness s of the past.
For the first time since Idol began, I’m a regular viewer. Here’s why:
1) the singers are amazing,
2) Jennifer, Steven and Randy behave like adults, and
3) the abusive tenor is gone. I mean the abusive baritone. Is gone.
I was VERY skeptical of this season and had predicted MAJOR doom and gloom scenarios.
I was wrong.
Thankfully.
Steven Tyler doesn’t offer a lot but isn’t TRYING to be something he’s not. He’s genuine in his feedback and is actually a nice change of pace. Jennifer Lopez is the real surprise for me. Sure she votes with her heart like Paula did but she can better articulate herself and is so caring and genuine it’s making me a fan of hers.
Overall the mistakes, and there were MANY of them, from last season have been corrected. Ellen was a gigantic mistake as was the focus on the “different” or “unique” singers especially the whole singer/songwriter angle. This is a SINGING competition not a “you’re different!” competition. The removal of DioGuardi helped refocus the selection of contestants away from that nonsense and back on the voices.
People like a competition and last season’s finalists were a vote of apathy from America which is clearly reflected in the abysmal lack of sales Lee DeWyze showed and the fact he doesn’t have a hit single.
If Idol can produce a hit maker from this season they’re back in the spotlight and with some needed credibility.
both steven and jennifer were great during the auditions, but in front of the live audience, they’ve totally shut down.
i suspect it’s because neither of them can handle the intense and loud booing when any judge says anything remotely negative about a contestant..
j-lo is on the show only to up her profile, so she doesn’t want to piss anybody off.
and i don’t think steven’s ever been booed by thousands (hundreds?) of people before, so he seems to be very afraid to talk over the jeers.
this is unfortunate, since he was funny and sometimes insightful at the auditions. hopefully, someone will point this out to him and encourage him to just ignore the crowd and give his opinion.
I gave American Idol a shot this season and so far I’m not impressed. It’s become way too commercial and focused on the contestants story rather than their talent. The talent so far is so -so. No one really stands out and I think people are mistaking that for there being a lot of talented contestants. The show is still taped and will be for the next couple of weeks. So it’s highly manipulated right now. I want to see the show live and the contestants live. I am more curious at this point for X-Factor. I understand the format is different and they allow bands.
Out of the 10 seasons of Idol I only know the names of two winners and quite a few who didn’t win. I know the ones who didn’t win are much more successful than those who did. I find that a real turn off of the show too. I actually can not think of who the winners are of any season except for the first two.
It’s really not true that more non-winners have been successful.
S1: Kelly Clarkson. Nobody from her season touched her.
S2: Ruben Studdard. Outsold by Clay Aiken and his soft pop and Christmas albums, but Studdard still gets some radio play. Aiken has apparently decided to stop making albums indefinitely.
S3: Fantasia Barrino. Hudson has an Oscar and a Grammy, but *as a recording artist* is less successful than Barrino, who has a platinum and two gold albums to her name (and a Grammy of her own).
S4: Carrie Underwood. Arguably the most successful contestant ever.
S5: Taylor Hicks. Handily outsold by Daughtry, but certainly ahead of McPhee and even Pickler.
S6: Jordin Sparks. 4 Top 40 hits; nobody else comes close.
S7: David Cook. Handily outsold David Archuleta (who still did quite well for himself) and had more hits.
S8: Kris Allen. Outsold by Adam Lambert, but had a top 10 pop hit.
S9: Lee DeWyze. Neither he nor Crystal Bowersox have done all that well for themselves yet, so it’s hard to call.
Basically only three runners-up (Aiken, Daughtry, Lambert) in the history of the show have done better in the music industry than the winners, which is only 1/3 of the time. It’s better to win.
I’m hoping that the contestants this year act like they want to win, because that was the problem last year: None of them looked like they cared about more than getting the platform and then coasting.
First credit to anyone other than Nigel Lythgoe is ludicrous. He is the one who brought huge changes and was very, very, upfront about them. Has he misfired, would we be hearing about Darnell or Fuller? Yeah, right.
The median of talent in the Top 24 was unparalleled on AI. What now becomes of the Top 13 is up to Ameriker, as it ought to be.
Nigel understood it was time for an injection of authenticity in the singing and judging talent. We now have both.
It’s been mildly entertaining rather than mind numbingly boring like last year. But so far no one really stands out. I don’t think that’s all that unusual though, the real test will be when they start competing live.
I really liked the new judged initially, but I gotta say, the last few episodes had me missing Simon a bit. Not every contestant is amazing, guys. I appreciate that warm and fuzzy is the new black, but if they don’t start some honest critiquing it’ll be hard to take week after week after week.
Stop kidding yourselves. Idol is worthless without Simon, and Tyler and J Lo, as Ellen did last season, are showing their ineptitude as judges now that the real competition is on. Simon kept it real, and gave the perspective of a music industry mogul, which is what these kids would face if they are serious about a recording career. Having their egos stroked by a rockstar and a pop princess will not prepare them for the real world of the music business. Those who prefer the show to be kind and gentle don’t get what it’s all about. This is not a community center talent search where the prize is $50 and a plastic trophy. It’s a search for the next Rhianna, the next Lady Gaga, the next Cee-Lo Green, and only a label executive like Simon, who tells it like it is and doesn’t tell you you’re “great” and “beautiful” when you’re not, can help contestants become competitive with these artists.
Amen!
Personally I hate the judges….Its like having 3 Paulas – None of them are being critical and having watched last night, not all the contestants were good. About half of them – maybe a third of them – have a realistic chance of winning – The rest can be gone now. (also look at their twitter followers to see about popularity)>>>I havent heard Steven Tyler give one good criticism- JLO is a abit better but she hasnt done it either. Randy has tried to be Simon but even his critiques are impossible to comprehend with all the dudes and dawgs…The talent is better but the judges are weak. But in the end, this seasons top contestants may have as many successes as season 5….. Im looking forward to Xfactor and its production values (some of which AI tried to steal with the backup singers etc last night – altho I HATED the producer aspect -lets see what the kids can do before you package them and auto tune them up)…..Wonder how NBC VOice will do – They have some name judges but can we sustain all these talent competitions – esp when AGT has singers too
JLO made the smartest move for her career. Shes making mutli million dollars from her Idol contract, shes gonna boost her recording career- she has a #1 song (which sucks) and is gonna do well with her new record which will get heavy promotion on Idol – probably a Jlo performance and more videos, shes gotten major endorsements that actually run during idol so sh es the big winner…and other posters are right – shes an active artist so is not gonna say negative things to get the (fake) boos from the audience…(I do hate how Nigel and producers keep manipulating everything as you can read by behind the scenes postings on ew and thr)
Having watched Uk X Factor for a long time now and found it really enertaining, I was quite fed up with it last season with Simon and Cheryl flrting all over each other (quite sickly, especially as he’s supposed to be engaged!)Simon starting every sentence with “I agree with Cheryl….” and generally being rude to Louis and Dannii if they disagreed with his precious Cheryl criminal convict Cole. Also, the fuss made by Cheryl Cole with her attacking a contestant called Wagner, live on air about matters that had nothing to do with the show and that could have been handled behind the cameras and showed many that Cheryl Cole is not professional at all. Between the two of them, pushing artists through that they favoured and not what the public wanted, even though the public were made to believe their votes counted and these votes were being paid for by the public but really appeared to have no say in who would be voted out at all. I believe it was fixed and it disgusted me that the public could be taken advanage of like that. I started watching Anmerican Idol and what a refreshing change it is compared to X Factor UK. It is about the contestants not the judges. In the UK, X Factor was more about what designer dress Cheryl Cole was wearing rather than the contestants. Ridiculous and the same ole rubbish from Simon Cowell. I was glad when it came to an end and glad that Matt Cardle won with Dannii Minogue as mentor. They gave Cheryl Cole all the best acts in order for her to win (why don’t they give her the older groups like they do to Louis and we all know he has no chance of winning with his acts). The public was so angry, they voted for any act rather than see Cheryl Cole win again. Smon also has gone down in my estimation as his brains seem to be in his pants. Let’s see how long it takes the Americans to get bored with The Simon and Cheryl Show.
