EXCLUSIVE: Robert De Niro is set to star in the Jessy Terrero-directed Freelancers, and Forest Whitaker is in talks to join him and Curtis Jackson in the cop drama. The film begins production April 18 in New Orleans. Jackson plays the son of a slain NYPD officer who, with his two best friends, joins the Police Academy. After graduating, he’s taken under the wing of his father’s former partner Captain Vic Sarcone (De Niro) in the ranks of Sarcone’s Street Vice Crime Task Force and he becomes part of Scarcone’s rogue task force. Philippe Casseus wrote the script.
The film’s produced by Randall Emmett, Jackson, and George Furla. Rick Jackson, Jeff Rice, Fred Malmberg and Daniel Wagner are exec producers. De Niro has been starring in Another Bullshit Night in Suck City alongside Julianne Moore and Paul Dano for director Paul Weitz. He’s repped by CAA.

Another cop movie? Wasn’t Deniro just in the horrible looking Son of no one. Not too exciting.
That was Al Pacino.
Projects like this (and SON OF NO ONE, STONE) reinforce the mentality of don’t bother wasting hard earned money at the box office. They can rent it from Red Box for $1 a few months after it’s release and say “what a load of crap” after saving $15. This isn’t entertainment, it’s a pay day via foreign sales.
That was Pacino dumbass.
Funny thing is, Pacino replaced De Niro in Son of No One.
Uhh — that was Pacino in Son of No One
let me guess the script was so good De Niro couldn’t say no. Or wait, maybe its the 5m for 8 days work. Randall Emmett trained in the Avi Lerner school of casting.
You sir are correct!
The man takes crap, Limitless, for money. His choice. But true.
No, it’s the chance to work with Jesse Terrero… because SOUL PLANE was so great.
Sounds pretty much in line with all the rest of De Niro’s recent films. Prediction: over the next few years, you’re going to see his movies all start heading direct to video. No good directors want to work with him anymore because he’s given up. What a waste.
Why does 50 cent keep getting movie roles? His music career has been irrelevant for 5yrs now.
That’s simple, he became a producer.
Wow, he really doesn’t care anymore. I guess he has his oscars so now it’s time to feather his nest. Can’t say I blame him for that but who would have guessed that De Niro would emulate Marlon Brando so thoroughly?
I love how there isn’t any mention that this is Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson starring in this film.
Paul Weitz directing? WME getting this commission?
De Niro does only 2 things now on screen:
1-Look menacing and/or sadistic (Even in the Fockers & SNL shit!)
2-Shoot, bludgeon, murder people
Way to go, Bobby!
And yet some call him a Hollywood great because of that boxing movie, Goodfellas, and Taxi Driver, where he displayed his acting range-#1 & #2 above.
I guess everbody loves a sociopath on screen.
Sad, it’s 2011, and they still let Bobby kill people for 5 million.
worst script ever
It was terrible. Tried so hard to be a gritty The Departed meets Training Day but failed miserably.
Worse than LIMITLESS?
And so would anyone on this board not work for 5 mil for 8 days work? His earning power has dropped significantly. Outside of Fockers, u can get him for cheap. His paychecks now come from Millenium type movies for very few days work.
Because hollywood sells us how great he is, it’s just the sell – to keep him relevant. I don’t know one great script in hollywood, outside of some Scorsese stuff that is good that has him in mind.
Unbelievable that a DeNiro, who once was a good actor, would sink so low as to share a screen with 50 Cent. Absolutely disgusting.
The apocalypse is upon us!
Deniro is still relevant after all these years and that isn’t easy in this business. So happy for 50, Jessy, Deniro, Casseus, Randall and hsff. These guys are bringing fresh energy to the screen and can’t wait to see how this pans out. Don’t under estimate Curtis by the way, very talented and smart business man.
Clearly, you’re drinking the cool-aid. Projects like this reinforce the mentality of don’t bother wasting hard earned money at the box office. They can get this crap from Red Box for $1 a few months after it’s release and say “what a load of crap” after saving $15. This isn’t entertainment, it’s a pay day via foreign sales.
you’re a funny guy. who’s agent do you work for?
Oh believe me, we won’t sell Fiddy short.
I mean, we are talking about the same Curtis Jackson who starred in those other two Hollywood blockbusters, “White Chicks” & “Boiler Room”, right??
C.J. wasn’t in any of those two movies.
“The apocalypse is upon us”
Do people like you who makes such ridiculous statements ever get outside? I think a bigger sign of the apocalypse is the stupidity of people like yourself who continuously used any fad, celebrity event, or in this case, movie casting as a precursor to some seismic event. The apocalypse cliche is over, please find a new phrase/word you and people like yourself can use to the point of nausea.
This is called Karma. He should have gotten rid of Rosenthal years ago.
I don’t know why you all are hating on DeNiro. Has he been in a lot of shit movies?YES…but he is still working and making MILLIONS! Every now and then he gets a great part….not so many of those for older actors.
Just horrible, but I guess someone’s got to bring home the bacon for Tribeca. His income is all that props up that company, including the Tribeca Film Festival.
Hey does anyone know anything about Forest Whitaker and the movie called Little Treasure? IMDB says its In Production, but the last update I can find anywhere online is from the Fall of 2010.
The very first movie my daughter is in it as an extra. Very excited to watch this!
It was excellent for what it was. I just saw it last night. I go to the theater to see movies like Thor & Pandora, not for this. I did see “About a boy” in the theater and Wietz directed that so I was hopping for a similarly harsh yet inspirational piece. It felt like one of those movies where you see a trailer that totally misleads you. “Rain on Me” comes to mind. The trailer was composed of quick cuts of funny, quirky moments but in the film Sandler turns out to be devastatingly mentally ill. I knew nothing of this book and when I was invited to preview this all I knew was the talent and director and I admire and respect them all. However, in short, this is not what i go to theater for. For anyone whose lived or worked at a homeless shelter (I’ve done both) this movie is unpleasant. I don’t need or want to be reminded of those times. I don’t want to see a homeless man murdered as a form of entertainment(the death blow was left to your imagination). I’ve seen too many hopeless drunks buy the farm. There’s rampant drug use of the white powdery kind (I can’t stand watching people smoke & snort, for real or on celluloid)and again, I don’t go to the theater for this.
They all did a go job. There’s the foundation for a great movie there. If they don’t do a good bit of post production to punch up a few of the key scenes I predict it will do less than 20 domestic. I’m sure they’ll make up for it in Europe. They love overly depressing melodramatic crap like this.
This could be very interesting. I`m a big fan of Robert De Niro. BTW, Great article. Thank you. Evan
