EXCLUSIVE: Showtime has bought a script for Chew, a quirky half-hour cop show based on John Layman and Rob Guillory’s bestselling comic book of the same name. Stephen Hopkins is attached to direct and executive produce the project, which hails from Circle of Confusion, the company behind AMC’s hit series adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead.
Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer (Eureka) wrote the Chew script, which will now be tweaked under Showtime’s guidance. Chew tells the darkly comic story of federal agent Tony Chu, a “cibopath” able to get psychic impression from the things he eats who is assigned to the most usual and bizarre crimes. “There are a lot of superhero comic books, but there are not many food comic books,” Layman told me back in July when the TV project was still in the nascent stages. Along with Hopkins, Burton, Milbauer, David Engel and Circle of Confusion are also executive producing Chew, with Hopkins’ producing partner Kate Garwood expected to produce in some capacity. Hopkins has a longstanding relationship with Showtime: He directed the pilot for the network’s dark comedy series Californication and recently helmed an episode of freshman drama Shameless as well as one of Showtime’s recently ordered pilots, the Don Cheadle starrer House of Lies.
In addition to The Walking Dead, which has been renewed for a second season, Circle of Confusion is executive producing Powers, a drama project based on the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Oeming that was recently picked up to pilot by FX. Charles H. Eglee adapted the comic book for Sony TV and FX Prods., with Michael Dinner directing.

wow, this sounds bad. they should stick to unfunny shows about broken women.
I always thought Chew was in part successful because of the story’s often gross subject matter (Tony eating a lot of nasty stuff) was successfully diffused by Guillory’s art aesthetic. It’ll be interesting to see how this transitions to film. Can’t wait!
How much you wanna bet that this “tweaking” involves changing Tony Chu into a Tony Hall? The ‘ole Hollywood switch-a-roo.
This will fail if they do not cast Community’s Señor Chang. Dr. Ken Jeong (aka Señor Chang) would kill in this role. Yes, he is a real MD.
I would love to see Ken Jeong in this role but I’m guessing that the creators’ vision for this role is a serious, no-nonsense dude. I’d love for them to take a risk and cast someone humorous like Jeong in this, but seriously, the role would cramp his style a la when Katie Couric killed her own perk when she left the Today show for CBS Evening News. Not saying Jeong doesn’t have the chops for a more serious role, just saying the higher-ups probably have someone more serious in mind… like this Ken Leung guy. Anyway, don’t want Jeong to ever leave Community.
Ken Jeong would be a mis-cast as Tony, but he would be perfect as Tony’s crazy older brother Chow. He was a former chef with a TV show that had a freakout after chicken was outlawed thanks to an epidemic. At one point he moves to a tropical island to open an illegal chicken restaurant.
I agree. While I would also like to see Jeong show some range beyond comedy, Chow Chu would be a great role for him. It would still allow him to be funny, but it would be more toned down in comparison to what he’s doing now. Also, I really think this show should be animated. I just can’t see something like “Chew” working in live action. Either way though, I just hope this gets made and has a successful pilot.
I think it sounds good! If it’s as good as the comic it should be great.. Thank god it’s not another reality show..
Hey, countdown until they white-wash this as well.
This sounds like a role written especially for Ken Leung!
Ron and Terri are the best!!!! They are the nicest most talented writers I have ever met!! Plus they love cheese!
hahaa … um, yah, Ron does not eat cheese! lol.
I hope they cast Ken Leung in the role of Tony Chu. He’d be PERFECT for the role!!
Here’s hoping they don’t white wash the character and cast Ken Leung for the role of Tony Chu. He was literally made for the role (the writer’s based the character off the actor) and the writers from a past interview really want him to be Tony Chu for the show. Crossing fingers.
Circle of Confusion on a roll!
KEN LEUNG FOR TONY CHU!!!!!
And Josh Holloway for his partner if I’m being greedy. That would be incredible!
So, which white guy are they going to go with to play the (formerly Asian-American) Tony Chu?
Excuse me, did I read that correctly…a “Powers” show? Walker and Deena on TV…?
If they do this right, it could be only the most incredibly awesome adaptation in any medium in the entire recorded history of humanity.
If they do this right.
Except that Brian Michael Bendis is the worst writer in mainstream comics today.
Here’s hoping that if Chew gets made it doesn’t go the same path as The Walking Dead. Even though it probably will.
Okay, Ken Leung would kill too. He certainly showed his chops on Lost.:)
Jealous much?
Hmmm… for those Lost fans out there, this would be perfect for a Ken Leung/Josh Holloway pairing!
wow. it always seemed Ken Leung would be the obvious choice for tony chu, but i guess i never got around to thinking about who would play everyone else. now that you mention it, Josh Holloway would be perfect for colby.
Some other great actors that can play the part are Jay Chou (played Kato in the last Green Hornet Movie) or better yet John Cho (played Sulu on the latest Star Trek movie). Both these guys would rock the part.
