The Sony Pictures Animation 3D toon had been set for wide release on Wednesday, Aug. 3, but the studio today shifted it up in the calendar to the Friday before. The moves comes after Fox on Tuesday moved its prequel Rise of the Apes to Aug. 5, where it would have competed directly with the little blue dudes at multiplexes.

curious… does anyone out there really wanna see a smurfs film? not hating, just looking for opinions
I do, papa smurf is a pimp!
Smurfz N The Hood? I’m game.
It’s a KIDS movie. Are you a kid? Consider also that Sony might be looking more towards Euro BO than US. I bet you didn’t even see Asterix at the Olympic Games.
True, the Smurfs are a very widely known and much loved European property, perhaps a bit less so in the UK however. But I seriously doubt Europe will take to what looks like a very Americanized, read unnecessarily pimped-up, improved-in-Hollywood version that lacks all the charm of the original. My prediction: flop. Asterix is also a huge European property but the films haven’t caught the spirit of the books. Asterix at the Olympic Games is a big budget, woefully unfunny embarrassment. Maybe the upcoming Asterix film will be better but I don’t hold out much hope.
Didn’t James Cameron already do that last year? Avatar seemed more like “Dancing with Smurfs”.
Oh man! Hahahaha… that joke is pure gold! I’ve never heard anything even remotely like it before! You must have an entire team of writers at your disposal.
So THE SMURFS would rather compete with RISE OF THE APES than COWBOYS & ALIENS?! It will get crushed by COWBOYS!!
You mean would rather compete with COWBOYS AND ALIENS than compete with RISE OF THE APES . . . COWBOYS is looking four quadrant so you’re right it will not do well.
Wasn’t it going to come out in July before?
smurfs is the next mars needs moms. Nobody wants to see this. not kids. not parents. It’s creepy, not funny and frankly, dumb. flop.
We will eat smurfs for breakfast.
And apes is going down, too. Bring it on.
screw marketing and “pre-sold” brands. i hope this bombs big time.
