But the good news for Fox is that MGM is still looking to let Fox keep distributing all of MGM’s library on home video because the studio has done such a good job since 2006, especially with the James Bond franchise. On the other hand, Fox appears resigned to the near-reality that Sony’s distribution deal with MGM will include international theatrical distribution which Fox used to handle. “The deal being discussed is with worldwide theatrical,” an insider tells me. Expect a decision on all of this within the next weeks.

I was thinking that this was gonna happen. That way, Fox still reaps the benefits of franchises like Bond on DVD. No love lost.
I’m thrilled if this comes to pass. Fox has done a fine job with MGM’s Blu-Ray releases of late, while Sony has begun licensing out their back catalog to Image Entertainment. Given MGM needing cash, it makes a lot more sense to stick with the current business model and remain with Fox, who will crank out Blu Ray titles whereas Sony seems to have little interest in them.
Not such good news for those outside the US – Fox is infamous for regularly dropping extras for European territories or releasing watered down versions of boxed sets (the Omen, Magnificent Seven and Planet of the Apes series most notably). Their international releases of the older Bond films on Blu Ray drop the original mono soundtracks, which means in Britain where the films were made you can’t hear them as they originally sounded, and since they region lock the US Blu Ray releases you can’t import either. Fox are so completely disinterested in pushing most of the films in MGM’s catalog internationally they’ve just sublicensed them to local distributors instead, resulting in poor no-frills transfers.
