EXCLUSIVE: Starz is developing The Brink, a supernatural crime drama project written by The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco and executive produced by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski through his Blind Wink Prods. The Brink is based on J.C. Hutchins and Jordan Weisman’ book Personal Effects: Dark Art.
The interactive supernatural thriller, which features various online extensions, is described by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker in his review as “equal parts House, CSI, and The X-Files.” It chronicles art therapist Zach Taylor’s investigation into the life and madness of Martin Grace, an accused serial killer who claims to have foreseen, but not caused, his victims’ deaths. Weisman and Blind Wink’s Jonathan Krauss is executive producing in addition to Verbinski.
Verbinski — whose latest film, the Johhny Depp-starring animated adventure Rango, is riding high at the box office — first ventured into television in the fall with another supernatural drama. Titled Magical Law, the project, written by Pirates scribe Terry Rossio, was set up at Fox and followed specialized cops and lawyers prosecuting otherworldly crimes.

The Book is awsome, and Hutchins is a great writer, he deserves this.
“Developing”… I hate that word, it means we probably won’t see it or it will come out in 5 years.
Hutchen’s “7th Son” was a wild ride. I haven’t listened to Dark Art’s yet (he makes his work available as podcasts) but the prequil he did to it was terrific. I’m looking forward to this.
You should read it! The Dark Arts book comes with documents and cards and all sorts of cool things. It is different than 7th Son but still really exciting.
I am so excited about this! J.C. Hutchins created a believable world with interesting and complex characters. The interactive components of the book: real tangible objects that came with the book, phone numbers listed in the book that lead to voice mail messages from characters, blogs and websites written by the characters, it was amazing. I have been dying for a sequel, and if the TV series takes off, maybe there will be demand for one (only if it’s written by Hutchins, though!) Hope Starz will be true to the vision of the book.
These are awesome news! The book is brilliant, the story is thrilling, and presentation is genious – you get delivered a bunch of documents, letters, ID cards and stuff with the book. And donÄt forget all the websites and fictional forums created for the story. So till now Dark Art/Personal Effects was a transmedial experience for haptic and visual senses. Not it will be even more transmedial.
YES! Wow! What great news! I wonder if the new project will be as immersive as Hutchin’s original, as detailed in Merzmensch’s comment.
Of course, that Hutchins, not Hutchin’s. I shouldn’t go on the intarwebs before I’ve had my coffee!
Way to go JC! Can’t wait to see it.
Looking at the slate of programming HBO, Showtime, AMC, and Starz are currently developing, Starz seems to be developing the most interesting series. I like that they’re open to trying out supernatural/fantasy/sci fi shows. This one definitely sounds promising.
Hutchins is a truly talented writer, a true genius for creating such believable thrillers! Bravo to JC!!!!!
What? Is Gore’s photo taken in his living room to post on some dating site or what? What the hell kind of photo is THAT?
There are so many ideas, options for episodes and storylines, in The Brink. The characters are string and well developed, and the setting itself has become another character. Great inspiration there.
Wow JC what an awesome thing for you if this does come to fruition. I do hope they will stay true to the book. I never did get a chance to read it however your other book 7th Son loved it so much. You deserve this for sure.
Ooh. This is good news. Hutch, you know how I felt about this bad boy. Well played!
Wow. I knew it was just a matter of time before JC Hutchins got the attention he deserves.
And by the way, the first time i ve ever seen a bunch of truly happy excited comments. That should tell you a lot about this guy’s talent. The anonymity of posting here all too often lets the vitriol rip.
It will never get made. “The Jockey” Albrecht has no real money to produce anything.
