On the heels of the news that Showtime will no longer make current series available for streaming on Netflix, fellow pay
cable network Starz said today that it will delay making new episodes available on its Play Starz broadband service carried by Netflix, Qwest and Verizon for 90 days after each episode’s premiere. The network said that it will also implement a similar measure for its premiere movies, though Starz subscribers will continue to have unrestricted access to both new episodes and movies on Starz’s own platform Starz Online. “Beginning with the April 1 premiere of the new original drama Camelot, new episodes of Starz originals will now be available on the Starz Play services 90 days after they debut on the network, with exclusive first-run movies later following suit,” Starz said in a statement. Past seasons of Starz series, including Spartacus, and previously aired movies will continue to be available for streaming. Authenticated Starz subscribers will still have full access to all current network programming through Starz Online. Starz’s current deal with Netflix is up at the end of the year.

This should have been in place before.
This is what killed the second season of Party Down. The first two episodes were on Netflix before the show premiered and the ratings tanked.
I doubt that the case. I watched both seasons and the second just sucked. It was cancelled because it wasn’t good.
TERRIBLE move by Starz. The number of people with AppleTV adding on Netflix increases every single day. While many will still watch 90 days later you lose all the “now viewing” buzz you had with Spartacus.
You’re right. We just got APPLE TV today (we’re not big techies) and now we’re really gonna watch stuff on Netflix streaming. Btw, I have NO IDEA what channel STARZ is — I probably would be more interested in their shows if I sampled them on Netflix.
As long as it doesn’t mess with SPARTACUS I’m good
When the second season of Spartacus premieres next year, the same rule will most likely apply, unless Starz gets really stupid and pulls their original programming altogether.
I hear ya. I’m sure there will be a delay. Boy do I love Spartacus as well.
Who cares. None of this stuff is available on Netflix Canada.

No.. One. Cares.
Question: Over/Under in years until all the media giants have their own streaming media services and by then Netflix will have it’s own share of original programming content and will still be major players in this burgeoning field of communication?
Pretty much all of the new release movies Netflix have to stream come from Starz.
Yes, Netflix will still be around. They started as a 3rd Window player (vis. Blockbuster) but are now trying to compete with the 2nd Window (vis. Cable/PPV distributors). Naturally Cable wants to push them back to the 3rd Window.
Netflix has been ahead of the game so far and there is no reason to give them any doubt of surviving IMO. That deal they just signed with Mr. Kevin Spacey proves to me they still know what is going on.
Yes, greenlighting a series with a 2-season commitment without seeing a pilot is totally proving they know what’s going on.
Just because there are respectable names involved doesn’t make this any different than going to vegas. It’s a huge, $100m gamble.
2011, Cable and broadcast networks only allow Netflix to air their
oldest episodes. 2013, Netflix ends their mail subscription service
forcing customers to stream only. 2014, Netflix increases their
subscribers rates dramatically. 2015, Netflix files for bankruptcy.
Ha, that’s a slight possibility (but a possibility nevertheless).
This sucks. Only reason I watched or even heard about Starz was cause of Spartacus airing on Netflix along with its first run advertizing all over. If it hadn’t been on Netflix right away I would have forgotten about it in 90 days. Starz is no Showtime or HBO. They are letting a good thing go here.
This makes sense… if you’re living in 2005. Now that every episode of every tv show is on a free (if illegal) streaming site 30 minutes after it airs, does Starz really think most people are going to wait 90 days to pay to see an episode they missed?
Meh. I’ve had to cut back on my Netflix viewing lately thanks to my ISP imposing a 120 gig per month cap on my data anyway, so this doesn’t affect me as much as it would have a few months ago.
Starz has their own shows?
DUMP CABLE – WHY? Because it should be Ala Carte. Your cable bill has become a welfare for dumb cable executives making reality crap.
Cable will never go a la carte, it will the lose them too much money. But that doesn’t mean you have to pay for it. I dumped mine last month.
All of these moves by the studios / networks are just delaying the inevitable. Customers don’t want to have to visit 29 different online stores to find a movie. iTunes has already trained them to get their media in one place. I understand that they don’t want to give up too much power to Netflix like the music studios did to Apple but they need to come up with an alternate solution that makes sense.
Well this explains why Starz was so cagey in talking about their Netflix’s deal. It’s reasonable that they’re protecting their series and movies more. Epix and Showtime have done similar actions.
Netflix is going the way of Napster…
Was going to get netflix just for Torchwood and Camelot…
Oddly enough, there’s no such window in place with bittorrent.
Exactly, moves like this just drive more people to pirating content instead of paying for it.
I actually find this to be highly inconvenient. I work when Camelot is on so I lookk forward to catching up on the weekend, sso now I have to wait 90 days? Your ratings should suck then forr I wont fibish
