After setting Henry Cavill for the lead role, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner for Ma and Pa Kent, Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures and director Zack Snyder are working on a villain for Superman: Man of Steel. I’m told there’s interest in Michael Shannon. Shannon is coming off a memorable first season in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and he turned in a strong performance in Take Shelter, which Sony Pictures Classics acquired at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Neither the studio nor Shannon’s reps were helpful.

I wonder how this will affect his time on Boardwalk Empire.
This would be perfect casting. Shannon is amazing.
NOTHING says villain like a David Letterman lookalike! Get ready for the Top Ten Reasons Kryptonite Is Good For The Soul.
Michael Shannon rocks. He was amazing in his Oscar-nominated role in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD – a very underrated film. Funny how the only sane person, the only one who tells the truth, is perceived crazy by society.
Not sure how I feel about him uses his talents in a reboot – but hey, take the paycheck I guess and use it to keep doing good stuff.
Henry Cavill is still a huge misfire, and Sucker Punch looks horrendously awful, but I still think Snyder can pull this off. As long as it is an action-heavy spectacle, he is golden.
The Sucker Punch billboards are so murky and unappealing. What a waste of money, can’t even tell what the images are suppose to represent. Also, not seeing a big tv advertising push so that’s probably not a good sign.
Has anyone seen Shannon and Bill Hader in the same room?
Loved him in Revolutionary Road!!! This could be interesting. Lex? Who else could he be?
Love this guy. Looks like BS. Big head too.
Was also great in Shotgun Stories and was the most interesting one in Revolutionary Road and The Runaways. Good for him.
How glad is Zack Snyder he met with Chris Nolan before Sucker Punch opened?
FANTASTIC actor.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that was the face of Braniac.
(Which would be a good thing.)
He could play a villian called “Reboot”, he makes people do things over and over and over. He’s pure evil!
Hmm… how does he look bald? I guess that’s the question.
He’s the best thing about BE – if they’re finally being smart about a Superman movie, they’ll scoop him up.
BUG will haunt me forever.
A tremendous talent. (Been a fan since Shotgun Stories & Bug.)
He’d make a really great Zod, but he’d be an absolutely incredible Bizarro.
Very cool news. Shannon is one of the best underrated actors out there. His turn in THE RUNAWAYS was spectacular.
Rina, how is Henry Cavill a misfire? I’m not a fan of people make such statements without mentioning why.
And don’t say it’s b/c Henry is 6’1 when Brandon Routh is 6’3. Barely taller and we got things called ‘lifts’.
I can see Shannon as Luthor, Braniac or Non. Can’t see him as Zod though. Hope Snyder casts him in the film!
BTW….Sucker Punch isn’t meant to be an Oscar nominated or critic friendly film. It’s about seeing chicks in skimpy outfits kicking ass while watching bad ass visuals and having fun doing it.
If you can’t get pumped watching that…than you need a pulse.
didn’t known John Mayer could act
He can’t. But this isn’t John Mayer.
Mike Shannon was AMAZING in 2009′s “The Missing Person,” one of the best noir detective thrillers in decades. Herzog’s all over him, Scorsese — he’s made the right friends.
If you can get a copy of him in a short film titled Herbert White- made last year, you won’t be disappointed. The absolute scariest, most realistic serial killer ever- all in a 15 min. short directed by James Franco. Really great little film.
If this is true, I hope we don’t lose him on Boardwalk Empire. It has been a real pleasure to watch him on the show, and it would be a great loss if he were to be replaced. Superman is said to begin filming in August; when does Boardwalk Empire film?
Excellent actor! Stole every scene in the Runaways. Super creepy great in Bug!
This guy is amazing in Boardwalk Empire.
I’m not being mean here, but do you think they he might be playing Bizarro?
“Neither the studio nor Shannon’s reps were helpful.”
hah
also: +1 for a highly talented actor.
Hopefully he gets the right part and gives a great performance.
