After setting Henry Cavill for the lead role, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner for Ma and Pa Kent, Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures and director Zack Snyder are working on a villain for Superman: Man of Steel. I’m told there’s interest in Michael Shannon. Shannon is coming off a memorable first season in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and he turned in a strong performance in Take Shelter, which Sony Pictures Classics acquired at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Neither the studio nor Shannon’s reps were helpful.

Am I nuts or does this guy look like Bret Carr?
If this guy places Lex Luthor I will absolutely shit myself over how awesome that would be.
SUCKER PUNCH is not meant to be a good film! It’s meant to lose tons of money at the box office and frighten Time Warner shareholders! Why can’t you critics just respect that?
WILL SNYDER STILL BE DIRECTOR COME NEXT WEEKEND?
Seriously, if Sucker Punch bombs what are the chances Snyder will get fired from Superman. Pretty good, right? Right? I just can’t bear to watch him ruin a potentially fine cast.
This is supposed to be Lex? Um, wrong Michael.
While I’m disappointed that we will now never see Brandon Routh back as Superman, I have to admit that Henry Cavill is perfect casting as the Man of Steel.
My first thought was Non. He’s gotta be Non.
eh, I’m on the side of Cavill being a terrible miscast and I never liked Routh in the first place. Two wrongs don’t make a right. But terrible miscast aside, that is not this movie’s biggest question. Disney dropped the ax on Zemeckis immediately. They didn’t play around. Warners cares about saving face with the fanaticism of Japanese zaibatsu. Ordinarily, I’d bank on them playing “Extend and Pretend” for months, until they could quietly make him go away. However, time constraints are at play here.
I agree Cavill was a really bad choice for Superman/Clark Kent, and he doesn’t even look the part. My chances are that he’ll get hit with Superman curse just like poor Brandon Routh did. Next time cast an American actor instead of a Brit as Supes, please. And get a better director and producer, too.
Take Shelter was amazing.
Kevin Costner is Warner’s plan B. When Sucker Punch tanks, they can show Snyder the door and let an Oscar-winning director take a shot.
I’ll throw my geek two cents in and say he’d make a great Bizarro. He’s weird-looking enough to pull it off. I have a huge man-crush on this guy. Amazing actor.
“Neither the studio nor Shannon’s reps were helpful.” Ironic since his reps no doubt placed this story. Nonetheless, dude is an amazing actor and the best thing about Boardwalk Empire. Hope he gets the gig.
I’m tired of seeing Lex Luthor (a campy one no less) in every Superman movie besides Superman III. I like what Batman Begins did and introduced different villains. I would love to see Bizarro, Darkseid, Brainic, Doomsday, hell I’ll even take Mr. Mxyzptik in this new Superman movie. Please be anyone beside Lex Luthor! Maybe after they finish the first movie they can introduce Lex in the end to set him up for the sequel. BTW Mike Shannon was amazing in BUG (the conspiracy theory nut job).
I’m with you: NO MORE LEX LUTHOR! However, the best incarnation of that character was Michael Rosenbaum on the TV show.
“Bizarro, Darkseid, Brainiac, Doomsday….” Any of the ‘B’ villains’ names make me laugh, sorry.
Solomon Grundy?
I hope he doesn’t take it. He’s too good of an actor to be involved in what will probably be a soulless reboot. Snyder at this point is an insufferable superficial hack. You could just see the slo-mo fights already play out.
I’m surprised that there are so many Michael Shannon fans posting today. I think that casting him would be a bad decision.
Michael Shannon looks like what would happen if Dr.Nick tried to fix Marty Feldman’s eyes.
so brilliant
I love Michael, but I couldn’t find him in Jonah Hex. Surly he will be seen in this one.
