It might not be the sexiest of this year’s new U.S. shows, but Blood Bloods has proved the most commercial at home and internationally combined. The Tom Selleck cop show has topped a chart of how this season’s freshman shows have performed. Blue Bloods has sold around the world, and not just to tiny channels but to big ones like Sky Atlantic in the UK, Australia’s Network Ten and Discovery Latin America. Armando Nunez, president CBS Studios International, has told TV trade Television Business International, “It’s perhaps not as sexy to talk about, but it has proven a success both on the network and in terms of global distribution.” TBI is due to publish its survey of U.S. network pick-ups Monday. Indeed, CBS’ strategy of showing procedurals might hug the shore creatively, but it has paid off globally. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, another CBS procedural, is in second place. Says Nunez, “The road is littered with pilots and broken series and high concepts that didn’t work. We are in broadcasting.”
The Event, NBC Universal’s mystery sci-fi show, would probably have been cancelled by now has it not sold so strongly around the world, TBI deputy editor Peter White tells me. NBC Universal sold The Event to more than 200 territories early on, and it has gone on to have a full U.S. season. Of course, some of this year’s new shows still haven’t aired yet, including Fox’s Terra Nova, due to air in October, and ABC’s Happy Endings. Shows graded “F” for fail in the survey because they have all been canceled include JJ Abrams’ Undercovers, Lonestar starring Jon Voight, and the Jimmy Smits legal drama Outlaw. And the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Chase and NBC’s superhero drama The Cape have both bitten the dust even in the short time since TBI compiled the survey.

Love “BB”. Old fashioned character driven family drama. I usually like my dramas a bit more intricate & forward thinking, but the actors in “BB” are fantastic, the stories are strong if maybe a little familiar & it’s great to see a show filmed in NY.
Mad love and better with You are great shows. Well written and well cast
You just named the two worst comedies currently on TV, hands down.
Seriously???? you give Detroit 187 a D- yet you give mr sunshine a c+ Hellcats a B and the Horrible Event A-? Detroit 187 is quality programming in a sea of Crap and you and your idiotic article just feeds the stupidity of the Nielson box holders and their moronic choices.
Did you even read the article??? The shows were graded on how much money they’ve made at home and internationally. It’s all about the buck…not what you think is quality tv.
Hellcats is fabulous and fun. Don’t be hating. Also, Blue Bloods deserves it’s top spot. Much credit must go to Mr. Selleck, who fought for the tone of the show. He was getting dissed as a diva last summer, but he was right.
I would have thought H50 would have been number 1. Awesome for Blue Bloods.
Tom Selleck… everything he does becomes a success. Selleck is a man of integrity anf honesty, and he is a first class actor. Here is his bio, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-kksKWW3Mc
Not surprised about Blue Bloods…but CM/SB and The Event are number 2 and 3?
I wanted to like Blue Bloods, but it is awful. The guy who plays Selleck’s father and the blonde woman who plays his assistant are two of the worst actors on TV. The storylines are total cornball: “We’re Reagans, damnit!” We get it. You’re better than us.
I don’t buy it. No way it made more than H50 or even Criminal Minds II. BB is a very old skewing show and a semi-flop in the US. It doesn’t even run in germany for example and it has no chance to become a success. H50 on the other hand is the only real drama hit from the new series (for a 10 pm show and these days at least) and it is a hit in foreign countries.
I’m only talking about the success. I don’t like either of those shows. The only comedy hit Mike & Molly is the biggest crapfest of all 2010/2011 network shows. LoneStar, Chicago Code, The Event and maybe Harry’s Law are the only network dramas I would renew based on my personal taste. On the comnedy side it would be Bob’s Burgers, Raising Hope, Outsourced and Traffic Light. Perfect Couples, Mr. Sunshine and Mad Love aren’t exactly good but they have potential.
My problem with Blue Bloods was it kicked off with a child in peril story. I usually avoid these, they seem to come during sweeps often, which also is somewhat skeevy imho. If you start with a child in peril story where do you go from there? Pregnant mother hanging off the edge of a building at gunpoint?
I get that I’m somewhat alone on this. It might also be the reason the show plays so well overseas? I dunno, but I don’t need a police officer family drama on my DVR.
Oh, and I’m outside the demo. What does that say?
Are you serious? Yes, the child in peril story was the reason it sold so well internationally. How random.
Blue Bloods is so bad. I tried to watch, for certain cast members, but it’s the same old recycled plots with awful, on-the-nose dialogue. It will run forever.
You must feel very smart to be you on your lofty perch.
Love Blue Bloods I’d watch anything with Donnie Wahlberg in it he is an amazing actor so much talent and the chemistry with the entire cast is so believable love the Sunday dinners!
Yay for Blue Bloods! Love the show. Love Tom Selleck. It’s refreshing to see a show with characters of integrity doing so well.
I HAVE NEVER MADE A COMMENT ABOUT A PROGRAM before
I LOVE BLOODS with Tom Selleck
I very rarely find a program that I just look forward to watch
every week but this one I just can not wait to see
THIS SHOW IS GREAT!
I am SO DISAPPOINTED to hear that it will not be on next season
Shocked by CMSB. Like it or not CBS sure knows what works.
Find it hard to believe that CBS won’t bring back both Blue Bloods and CMSB. They both make too much money. Curious to see what CMSB does for Season 2. Lots of potential.
OMG!!! Blue Bloods is the best show ever on Friday nights!!! Donnie Wahlberg & the whole cast is awesome!!! Hope it comes back for round 2.
H50, The Defenders, and Blue Bloods are my faves of the new season. CM/SB not so much. CBS had a good season.
The serialized, convoluted, wannabe Lost “The Event” over action-packed, no B-story, exotic locale “H50″? Really? You’d think it would have been at least #2 after Blue Bloods, if not #1.
Funny thing about Chase, if it had been on CBS it would still be on the air, IMO. It fit into the CSI/NCIS/Criminal Minds model. Unfortunately NBC’s days of strong 10 p.m. dramas are over, their brand is now “ironic”/”awkward silence” comedies like 30 Rock and The Office and their many clones including the inexplicably still on the air Outsourced (+D)
As much trashing as The Event has gotten I actually enjoy it and am hopeful it’ll get a second season after seeing how well it’s done internationally. If it does, hopefully, Leila’s character will get killed or her body will transform so she can be replaced by somebody who can act. One of the more recent episodes I watched when her and her bf had the gun on Dempsey’s dull secretary you could see she was restraining herself from bursting out laughing.
Blue Bloods is the only one of the new shows I like unreservedly. Harry’s Law would be another if it didn’t spend so much time preaching. It’s as if they went directly to “very special” episodes. Kathy Bates, however, is excellent. As for Hawaii Five-O, it’s a pale imitation the trades on the good name of a much superior original. I used to like NBC a lot (almost exclusively), CBS hardly at all. Now they’ve switched places. With the original L&O gone (don’t even mention L&O:LA), the only thing I watch on NBC is Leno. CBS gets the rest of my time (though I do confess a certain guilty pleasure in an occasional Dancing With the Stars on ABC).
Sky Atlantic a big channel?
On launch night the first episode of Blue Bloods on Sky Atlantic got 225 000 viewers. The premiere of Treme got 66 000 viewers and a 0.5% audience share.
True Blood on FX got 236 000 viewers. Repeat episodes of The Simpsons on Sky 1 that evening got over 400 000 viewers. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is consistently getting over 400 000 viewers on Sky 1.
Entourage, in an amdittedly late timeslot of 10.30pm on Sky Atlantic, got just 18 000 viewers.
I guess it depends how you want to define the size of a network but if no. of viewers is a measure then Sky Atlantic is anything but big.
Bluebloods is an amazing show! i normally dont like cop dramas… this show has heart, substance and great actors! Donnie Wahlberg is so beleivable as Danny Reagan, u forget that he isnt really from new york! the rest of the cast is awesome as well! Long live Bluebloods!
I love the show Blue Bloods it is a great show I dont miss an episode. I also love the show Hawaii 5 O. 2 of my favorite shows
Blue Bloods is the only new show that I have continued to watch. It has a great cast of strong actors and good writing; however, the sex appeal is coming from Donnie Wahlberg’s character. As good a Tom Selleck is, Donnie is more than holding his own. I was/am not a big New Kids fan (they are okay, just no big deal to me) but I can’t help but respect what Donnie has done with his career. I like the entire cast but the Danny Reagan character is particularly fascinating and very sexy. Congratulations and Well done to L. Goldberg, CBS and everyone over at BB.
Bluebloods not the sexiest show? You’ve got tobe kidding.
I am a huge fan of The Event, and this was an excellent episode.
Yes, it sucks that they killed of Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr., from “187″ [check it out if you haven't seen it]), but this may not be the last we see of Thomas!
Think about it, when this show started, they were showing scenes from occurrences that happened in earlier years, the 40′s, 50′s, etc . . .
I think that as this plays out we will start to experience a backstory, detailing the history of the aliens, and what was happening before they crash landed on earth.
This scenario is set up perfectly. Leila is on the brink of being told by her father, Michael, the story of their race and who/what she really is. It makes sense that this sequence/story line would be accompanied by footage of scenes from the past: How they got to earth, What was happening on their home planet, their previous interactions with ancient civilizations on earth as the “guardian angels” mentioned in religions.
This series is poised and ready to jump into a vast timespan, with tons of directions to go and opportunities to take advantage of.
Maybe now we will get to see first-hand what led up to all of this, and expand our overall understanding of the aliens, what they are, what they’ve done, what their motivation is, etc. . . Maybe we’ll get to see their home planet.
As far as the story goes, it makes sense that Thomas would bite the dust at that moment. All through the series the writers have been hinting that one of the two (Sophia and Thomas) was going to die in a scenario directly involving the other one. Thomas almost shot her, she said she might have to kill Thomas, etc . . . Even in this episode, there was a moment where Thomas and Sophia are standing on the balcony of the church arguing, while Thomas’s manipulating girlfriend is lurking in the doorway, and Thomas was holding a machine gun. Sophia was unarmed, and tension was rising. I was wondering if Thomas, with his girlfriend watching, would crack under the pressure and shoot his mother, taking control and simultaneously revealing to his gf that she had successfully manipulated him. Finally, Thomas realizes that his mother is the wiser of the two, and his gf watches in horror as he breaks down and Sophia embraces him. At this moment, with Sophias hand touching Thomas’s neck, I was wondering if Sophia was going to snap his neck and end his meddling once and for all.
The writers have been leading up to the demise of one of the two, and I think it is better for the future of earth that Sophia is the one that survived, and simultaneously redeeming for Thomas to make the right decision at a dire moment and sacrifice himself to preserve their true leader and prevent the horrible tyranny that would have inevitably manifested if Thomas and his manipulating girlfriend were in full control.
I bet we will see Thomas again. They can’t get rid of Clifton Collins Jr.
I can’t wait to see what happens from here.
If the aliens are the “guardian angels” from the religions of ancient civilizations, non-supernatural flesh and blood beings that are mistaken as myth in modern times, then this show’s plotline aligns with Ancient Astronaut Theory, which I believe there is strong evidence to prove is historical fact. Considering the existence of “predictive programming” in modern television and movies, I wonder if this show is the first step in the revealing of the evidence that will prove Ancient Astronaut Theory in reality.
I think Dempsey may in fact be an ancient alien. Not only that, but judging by how much he knew about the amphorae, the cave/chamber, the painting, and how his tattoo on his arm looked like it matched the symbols on what may have been the arm of the head alien depicted on the cave’s wall, I speculate that Dempsey might be the being depicted. He is running the conspiracy in modern times, he may well have been running things in ancient times.
This makes sense with my other theory, about the potential to extend the shows timeline and show the aliens interacting with ancient man, too. We know that the shows creators can use effects to make Dempsey look young again. If they plan on flashing back to 3,000 bc or earlier, it makes sense that Dempsey would look younger, and since they have shown us that they have the capacity to make him look younger, this seems to me like an intentional hint that it is in the works, and that we will see Dempsey in action, manipulating the people’s of antiquity.
Either way, THIS SHOW ROCKS. GIVE THE EVENT A SEASON 2!!!
Surprised Nikita hasn’t sold better internationally.
