At Syfy’s upfront presentation in New York today, president Dave Howe introduced what he said is the largest original programming slate in the channel’s 18-year history, featuring 14 new original series and movies comprising more than 100 hours.
The event was a hot ticket as it was held at the Foxwoods Theatre, where Syfy hosted a live performance for ad buyers of the much-talked about musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Syfy is the official media partner of the Broadway show, a decision that no doubt sounded great when it was made before the musical was hit by a series of setbacks, including actor injuries, safety violations and abysmal reviews leading to a creative overhaul.
Syfy is coming off a year marked by disappointing ratings for Caprica and Stargate: Universe, both canceled after short runs. But with new series Being Human and Face Off both renewed and doing solid business this year, Q1-to-date Syfy is up 13% among total viewers and 7% in adults 18-49 vs. last year.
In July, Syfy will launch four scripted series in the same month — for the first time ever — new drama Alphas and returning series Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven.
Also announced today was the launch of a new Syfy publishing business of genre games under the Syfy Games banner. Here is detailed information on all upcoming Syfy series and original movies as well as scripted and unscripted series in development:
NEW SCRIPTED SERIES

Taking the law into their own hands, the unlikely team, led by Dr. Leigh Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Oscar nominee David Strathairn) investigates cases that suggest other Alpha activity to uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able, or willing, to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.
Alphas also stars Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada, and is a production of Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television. Executive Producers are Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein for BermanBraun, Zak Penn and Ira Steven Behr.

NBC has poisoned what once was a network where you could definitely count on something both different and good. Now, unfortunately, it’s just different (and not so different at that). BBC to the rescue.
Syfy is no longer science just fiction, stargage sgu is the best show on cable but it is poorly executed. As for warehouse 13 and eureka the are great shows but i never know when they’re on they leave for months at a time then come back on diffrent nights . Im very upset with this and find my self streaming almost all my tv shows and as for ratings did you ever think that most geeks get there media from other places rather than a crappy network that has done nothing but disappoint
SGU was awesome! So stupid to have cancled that one. Maybe if you guys didn’t make us wait 6 months to a year for 4 new episodes the ratings would look better. I’ve been a long time Eureka fan but wth we got 4 episodes last July and you have finally put it on the schedule for next July. No idea what the story line is anymore, i need more than 4 episodes a year.
I would much rather have Stargate Universe than more shows that are just like Ghost Hunters or Fact or Faked; I don’t even like those paranormal reality shows anyway. I love SGU and liked Caprica. I will not be watching most of these new shows. If I want cooking, I watch Food Network. If I want paranormal investigation, Ghost Hunters will suffice, though that’s getting old. Stargate Universe just keeps getting better and the actors have been great from the start. It will be greatly missed.
TIMBER! Show after show.. chopped down, ripped apart, or torn out by the roots. The SyFy landscape is looking scarred and barren. The executives are making the right call by planting seeds in the filthy, stained bed of “reality tv”. It suits them… I hope they enjoy the antibiotics.
No SG, no Merlin it appears… well you finally did it! You’re fired!! (that reality show lingo.. did you catch it? Of course you did!)… I will no longer allow your worthless, selfish programming in my living room.. you are band from my MCE channel map.
Syfy has definitely slipped in quality shows that most people that watch this channel want to see. Eureka, Haven, Wharehouse 13 and Sanctuary are good, but I am so very tired of ghost hunter, wrestling and anything remotely similar to such shows. Bring back programs that are classics like Farscape and the original Stargate. Honestly most of SyFy’s programming now is crap.
I agree, wresting sucks. What on Earth does wrestling have to do with science fiction? Fiction, yes but science fiction? I don’t think so. I think some of the reality shows like Destination Truth does fall under the category.
We should have a “million
man” march on SyFy network to show our displeasure!
Say what you will … I’m just thrilled that Eureka and Warehouse 13 are back! They are without a doubt the most fun programming on television today!
Now that Stargate Universe is canceled, can you bring back Stargate Atlantis? Please?
I still like Syfy. I still love to watch Ghost Hunters (even if it is fake). I love Being Human, though will check out the BBC version that I didn’t even know exists. Dr Who is greatly missed. Yes Syfy is getting a little over the top with the reality series lately. But it is still better than a lot of the other networks with Idol and shows like that. Maybe they need to have a Sci Fi Classic channel with all of the old series so many seem to want.
We get all of our shows by setting up the DVR to record them. It will pick up anything scheduled by title. Then we watch at our convenience, worth spending the $5 a month.
The only reason I fought “tooth and nail” with my cable company to get the Syfy (Sci-Fi before 2010) Channel is because of my love of entertaining, challenging and thought-provoking programming. Where is the science fiction? Maybe someone should explain to the programming execs that horror, paranormal, cooking, wrestling, reality-TV is not science fiction. Most of the current programming on Syfy is science fantasy or just plain fantasy (there is a difference). The Syfy channel is on its way to a curtain close if it does not return to its beginnings.
As long as Warehouse 13 and Ghost Hunters are renewed, I’m happy!
Was Three Inches always a possible for SyFy? Seems like they’ve talked about it for a long time. Was it originally going to NBC?
I’m really happy Eureka, and warehouse 13 are coming back, finally. But I am a little bummed out they canceled Caprica and SG-U. Apparently no one every learns from the past, does no one remember when FOX canceled “Firefly.” Idiots.
I love the syfy channel but I was surprised they started showing wrestling what has that to do with syfy? But other than that I do like the ideas on some of the new shows/films and seems they might be trying to redeem
I love the syfy channel and yes I was surprised when I saw wrestling on the channel. I remember way back when they used to sow lexx that was probably the best thing they ever had and in those times was the only chanel that showed japanese animation. Nowadays I get wrestling? Although having said that it does look like they are getting back on track I like the ideas behind some of the new shows/films and others have already been done by other networks. Wasn’t too disappointed behind sgu or caprica as they often were the only things that put me to sleep in the evenings.looking forward to seeing something new and original just don’t balls it up. Only things I’m really looking forward to is warehouse 13, V and Eureka.
Quite excited to hear about another season of Warehouse 13 and also happy about Destination Truth starting its season recently as well. Hope many more to come for both. A few things about the shows above…
3 inches sounds like it could be really funny. Imagine have a super power that only “kinda works”. Imagine the guys face as he tries to make it go further….too funny (at least in my head).
Legend Quest sounds really good. Symbology is definitely a fascinating subject and I’m excited to watch.
Roswell and Gretl both have very popular subjects and if done correctly should be awesome.
THis has been going on for over a decade with many of the cable stations that started out in the late 80′s – early 90′s. Yes, this is a station that is supposed to bring science fiction to the masses, and are failing to do so because it’s not the shows that matter, but the corporate wallets that get their cash from their shows.
Some shows fail that are/were good whilethe crap gets pushedthrough for whatever reason. Much like the music industry with Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, WIllow Smith, and other non-talents. They aren’t looking for quality, they are looking for quantity because, in their enfeebled and cash-addled minds, more means better.
THey will never realise that there is a virtualy playground of new material for them to go into that IS thought-provoking, emotion-raising, adventure-filled, or just plain science fiction fun. It’s now become, “What can we make as cheaply as possible but tag something to make people take notice.” Case in point “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.” This was a film that was born in crap, conceived in crap, looks like crap, and should bever have been made. They tagged it, however, with 80′s pop heart throbs “Deborah Gibson and TIffany” as the stars. It’s at this point someone should have stopped and said, “Wait. What the hell are we doing? Are we THAT desperate to keep throwing video feces on our station?”
Alas, nothing like common sense will prevail in the media any longer. It’s become the rich flipping the rest of the world the bird saying, “F*** you. HERE’s your entertanment. Buy stuff and make me more wealthy, you pigs!”
Am looking forward to the return of my favorite shows, and glad to see that Haven is coming back, but I’ll probably not check out any of the new stuff SyFy is coming out with. This used to be my most-watched channel, but not so much these days.
a cooking show on syfy have you lost your mind
