EXCLUSIVE: Syfy has renewed promising freshman drama series Being Human for a second season. In its January 17 debut, Being Human, an adaptation of the British series, averaged 2 million viewers to become Syfy’s most watched new scripted series winter premiere since Battlestar Galactica in 2005. The series, produced by Zodiak USA and Muse Entertainment, has solidified its status as Syfy’s most successful winter scripted series launch in 6 years with a season-to-date average of 1.8 million viewers. It is also the channel’s most female-skewing series ever, with women comprising 53% of its audience. “Being Human has proven to be a winner for Syfy on all fronts,” said Syfy’s president of original content Mark Stern. “Using the original format as inspiration, showrunners/writers Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke – along with a superlative team of writers, cast, and production – have created an amazing, compelling series in its own right,” said We can’t wait to watch Aidan, Josh and Sally continue their struggle to be human in the second season!”
Being Human stars Sam Witwer, Meaghan Rath, Sam Huntington and Mark
Pellegrino as three supernatural roommates – vampire Aidan (Witwer), ghost Sally (Rath) and werewolf Josh (Huntington) – who share their secrets and a Boston brownstone. It is based on the praised British series, Being Human, created by Toby Whithouse and produced by Touchpaper Television, part of Zodiak Media Group. Carver, Fricke and Whithouse are executive producing with Michael Prupas and Rob Pursey. Being Human marks the first scripted hit for Zodiak USA, which is also behind ABC’s new unscripted series Secret Millionaire.

A fan and promoter of BOTH shows but got let down with UK recent ending.
Yeah, the UK-BH was constantly promised to bring the trio back together to be tight and support each other against the outside world, human or supernatural for the finish of S3. Instead Series 3 ended with Mitchell’s assisted suicide by George with Annie’s barely heartbroken approval, Nina could careless. Mitchell was Ole Yeller put down for having rabies.
That isn’t the direction (Blackhole) I’d like to see the the US version waste it’s way into, saying the mentally ill and addicted should just give in or give up, kill themself. The UK version is going to limp along for a bit as Two Werewolfs, Baby Wolf and a Nanny Ghost taking on the Apocalypse of evol Vamps. Havin’ a Laugh with that one.
Super pumped about this being renewed. Can’t wait to see where they take this one because it will have to deviate from the BBC version eventually.
I also believe that the BBC “Being Human” series outperforms the US/Canada series. The actors give the characters more “gritty” realism in a fantasy world of vampires, werewolves and ghosts. That being said, I do hope that both series continue. The third season in the BBC series has certainly been the best . . . stretching the writer’s imaginations and giving the viewers much to see and think about. However, of all the BBC and SyFy series . . . the ultimate best is “Doctor Who.” None have surpassed the writing and creativity in thought.
That’s why Toby Whithouse is a brilliant writer, for both Doctor Who and Being Human. The original will be better than a remake as always, and Series Three of Being Human proves that (hence why it was recommissioned).
I was really sad to see so much at the beginning of the series was just a weak imitation of the UK series, but with sexier actors and flashier effects. Just typical Hollywood style glamor before substance, I thought. But in the last couple of episodes they seem to be going off in their own direction, and I’m really starting to appreciate the US version on it’s own merits.
At this point, I’d say I’m a fan of both and am happy to see both will have another season.
I never watched the BBC series – only American Series. When I look up the old BBB episodes and watch them – they look like crap compared to the American version. 1) I don’t like curly haired idiots. 2) I don’t like annoying British accents. And 3) I don’t like poor quality/crap compared to newer HD with enhanced effects.
The British version is dump. The newer-improved American version is here to claim its place in the annals of TV series history!
I think that the being human US version is great because even though you can watch the BBC version season 3, the US version gives newer viewers a chance to watch it from the beginning.
Personnaly, i prefer the US remake because of the new cast. Sally is okay, Aidan is less charismatic than Mitchell but he’s still okay. The big difference is Josh, seriously i couldnt hear anymore of George, the guy is so lame, skinny shy..annoying voice. Hes the one who made me stop to watch the UK version. Except that both of the series are doing good.
I actually only became aware of the original UK version after seeing the North American version, I think both are fine shows in their own right (actually wouldn’t mind sitting in one weekend and marathoning the UK one)
I find the NA one to just have more quality acting, and that’s my opinion, for whatever that’s worth. (it’s also, admittedly, a tad easier to digest American idonyms/referances (SP??) than it is British)….
Honestly, this whole back and forth about which is the better/worse is yet another example of two great nations separated by a common language and culture.
It’s pretty funny, really… I started to watch the show one Tuesday night when they were showing previews and commercials On Demand. I recognized Sally’s actor (Meaghan Rath) from another show I liked so I checked it out.
Lemme say this… excellent plot, awesome casting and acting, and the effects are surreal. Look, I’ve never seen the original (Though I hope to) so I won’t trash it but this remake is amazing. I admit, several episodes in, it started to lagg a little bit and it didn’t hook me in like it did initially, but then several more episodes dropped and I got right back on. Thanks SyFy for renewing this awesome show, it’s a real winner. [Hope to see the BBC original soon, but I don't think I have BBC America on my listing]
Never watched the original BBS series but really like this North American one. I felt that it was a little slow at first but after a couple of episodes, I was hooked.
Really love the character Josh and the actor playing it.
Very glad the series got renewed.
Show is great. I def. haven’t watched Syfy in forever and this show brought me back to the network. Glad to see it get another season!
I have never heard of the BBC. And seeing I do live in the US and tend to watch shows made here. I love this show regardless whether it is a remake or not. I have watched many remakes and sometimes they are better than the originals. I am sticking with the American version and can’t wait for season two. And to people hating on the remake, don’t want watch it ,no one is making you. As mom has always said if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
Although I prefer the BBC original, I have been following the U.S. version and slowly taken up to it. I would not base any comparisons on “special effects”, as in both shows, the trickery is thankfully kept to a minimum, not letting the supernatural visual aspects take the place of the writing, which, in my opinion is excellent in the BBC and quite decent on Syfy.
I prefer the British series because it has more of the “how would these “people” deal with the world if their situation could happen in real life?” approach, just as it was in the original “Life on Mars” vs. the American remake. Besides, all three BBC characters have more background and individuality than their Syfy counterparts so far. Still, after three seasons of George, Annie and Mitchell, it is disappointing to say good-bye to the vampire, (Peter Jackson hired actor Aidan Quinn for The Hobbit, requiring a three-year commitment in New Zealand) although I admit he was given a very compelling sendoff, in one of the series’ best episodes.
I wonder how Series 4 will make up for the loss…
I get sooo tired of the “oh the original was so much better” crap. Stick it in your stodgy backwards pants and take it somewhere else! Its an awesome show, fantastic given all the crap that is out there… the actors are TOP notch. Effects are brilliant! SO glad it has been given a go-ahead for season 2!!!
I love this show. I so got hooked on this show.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE NEW SEASON OF BEING HUMAN (SYFY) STARTS?!?!
For those wondering why they decided to remake an existing and ongoing series…
Despite the fact that we may only be an ocean apart the audiences are very much different. I’m an American, married to a Brit so I’ve seen and enjoyed my fair share of series from both sides of the pond. I am very aware on how these differences can translate when put into a television program. Take the IT Crowd for instance. There was to be a American series as well and it never made it past the pilot. They even had Ayoade recurring his role as Moss but the problem was none of the writing had changed. They took the first episode, replaced the actors and acted it out verbatim. It fell flat. Oftentimes changes have to be made to adapt to your target audience.
The fans of either shouldn’t really be complaining in the first place because just by simply being a fan of the show encourages people to introduce themselves to the other. Both sides of the coin should be happy both series are successful.
Awesome news, I’m looking forward to the new season! Although, I have to say something now: Please stop ragging on both ends, please. Yes, the new version is a remake, but it’s very well done. The actors are doing a fantastic job, as are/were the original BBC actors. In my opinion, both versions are wonderfully made, so I see no reason to bash one over the other.
I LOVE THIS SHOW AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED BEING HUMAN IS NO1 CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE ILOVE YOU AIDEN
cant wait for the second season. going to be better than the second.
i love the show and cant wait for the next season
when does it come back
your joking right the US version is way better period I just couldnt get into the Uk version it wasn’t believable for me it was just so fake but thats wat makes the US version better its believable and way better actors so wat its the same plot the US made it better
Man, all of this bashing on which version is better is really starting to grate. Both are equally good in their own ways.
I mean really, if you hate the US version so much, don’t watch it.
Why are you even commenting on this page? It doesn’t concern you in the least. What, does your Google only direct you to the US show’s publicity? Goodness.
You almost seem surprised that the US remade something.
Stop bashing on the US show just because you’re worried about the seemingly unlikely possibility of losing some viewers of your precious British show to the American version. And those in favor of the US show, stop retaliating against the UK. Didn’t you ever hear of the phrase: two wrongs don’t make a right? Just because a few UK Being Human lovers can’t grow up and act maturely doesn’t mean you need to stoop to their level.
Hate this post if you want, my dear little children. But here’s something you ought to know. I won’t be back to view this. After I click ‘Submit’ and go to work for the day, this post will be so far from my mind you couldn’t find it with the world’s most advanced telescope. The main purpose for posting it at all was just to send out my opinion into the void, welcome or not. On some levels it makes me a hypocrite, because I just finished telling you to keep your opinions to yourself while not using those exact words and here I am about to put my opinion out there.
The difference though, is that I’m fully aware of it.
Good afternoon to you all.
Unfortunatley your all wrong! Both series are incredible and if any of you are true syfy fans, you can love both of them with no favorites. Both Josh and George are amazingly cowardly and awkward, Aiden and Mitchell are both reluctant bloodsukers, and both Annie and Sally are still here. If you wanna complain go ahead, but your just proving my point that your all immature if you continue to bicker about which one is better!
i dont know why people even compare the two shows they are two different shows with different people it would be beyond boring if they kept the same script and also the brittish version looks so cheaply done they couldnt find anyone better looking than those people???? uuhhgg i wouldnt wach the brittish version if i was payed, id rather take a long long nap!i dont want to be dissmised as just one of the many female veiwers because besides the glaring obviouse good looks of everyone in the us / canada version the acting , emotions , effects and sets were really awesome to.clearly this show is soooo much better its warmer.
