Kevin Costner Set For ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’
Kevin Costner Up, Up And Away For ‘Superman’ Role?
BURBANK, CA, March 17, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, the father who raised Clark Kent as his own son, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.
Snyder stated, “Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”
Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film’s star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Costner most recently starred in 2010’s “The Company Men,” and is currently in development on the comedy “The One.” He has won two Academy Awards®, for producing and directing the epic “Dances with Wolves,” also garnering a nomination for Best Actor. He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including “The Untouchables,” “No Way Out,” “Bull Durham,” “Field of Dreams,” “JFK,” “The Bodyguard,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Tin Cup” and “Swing Vote,” to name a few.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
The new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Now all they need to do is cast Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane. She’s a great actress.
deja vu?
Tell me they’re not doing an origin story AGAIN on Superman? What moviegoer doesn’t know the story by now? Perhaps Costner and Lane will just appear in flashbacks. Same deal with the Spider-Man reboot. Feel free to chime in if someone has read the script/s.
WE ARE LIVING IN GROUNDHOG DAY! Every day we wake up to the same casting announcement again. Speaking of which, I’m amazed somebody hasn’t done a sequel to Groundhog Day. It could be a yearly franchise. Different characters every year get stuck in their own repeating Groundhog Day, until they learn their valuable lesson, and finally break the loop.
Diane Lane will make a crazy hot Martha Kent. and she has the right last name for a Superman flick.
Snyder stated, “Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman…”
Why does it make me cringe with embarrassment when a director talks earnestly about the emotions and identity issues of an effing comic book character?
Hey Zack, bullets bounce off his chest.
They could cast Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks and I still wouldn’t buy a ticket. What moron decided the movie-going audience needs another origin story? “Superman” has to be one of the all-time most repetitious and overwrought franchises in film history. And it doesn’t help that the origin story has been on television now for–what? FOREVER!
Costner is pretty notorious for falling out with directors if he feels he can do a better job than they can. He’s going to chew up and spit out Hack Snyder in no time. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Nolan ends up ghost directing this thing.
In this case Costner needs them more than they need him.
If he starts causing problems Snyder will just dump him and pick anyone else for what will be a relatively minor role. In any case Snyder is a good guy and get on well with his actors so shouldn’t see a problem
glenn ford was a by far cooler choice.
@rick
That “moron” would be Christopher Nolan — take it up with him and his 2 billion in box office.
Excellent casting choice. Still unsure of whether this movie will actually succeed…commercially or critically.
