Sony Pictures-based producer Matt Tolmach has appointed Robert Kessel to be SVP of production. At Matt Tolmach Productions, Kessel will oversee the development and production of the company’s slate of films. Tolmach exited his co-president of production job at Sony to join the producing roster of the Marc Webb-directed Amazing Spider-Man, and he has since made several recent project acquisitions, including Frankenstein, The Slackfi Project and The Kitchen Sink.
Said Tolmach: “Though I only met Robert earlier this year, I’d known of him for a long time. He is well respected for his great taste, extensive skills, and relationships with filmmakers. He is going to be a tremendous asset to our company and I’m thrilled to have him on my team.”
Kessel most recently served as EVP Production & Acquisitions for Overture Films, overseeing such films as Let Me In and acquiring The Visitor and Sunshine Cleaning. Before that, Kessel was a partner and production head for seven years at Hart Sharp Entertainment, and before that an acquisitions exec at Miramax.

worked with robert on a project he inherited while he was at overture. great exec and a pleasure to deal with. they are lucky to have him.
Damn fine hire! Amazing taste and talent. (But is that photo from a high school yearbook?)
He is the nicest guy in Hollywood. So glad he ended up with such a great gig. He does look really young in that photo. Oh wait, he does in real life too. Must be all the 5am workouts
He is one of the best and nicest people in the business. Great taste and loved working with him on various things while he was at Overture. Tolmach’s shop is shaping up nicely.
I had the great honor of working with Robert from the beginning of Overture until it’s closing and he is the real deal – genuine, hard-working, passionate and the nicest guy in town. Tolmach is lucky to have such a great guy on his team!
Good for Tolmach. I worked with Kessel for many years and he is a great executive and a really nice guy. Smart and unassuming…rare traits in Hollywood. Best of luck Robert!
