They already had the queen of TV, Oprah, on the show, now Tina Fey & Co. have booked film royalty Tom Hanks to guest star in an upcoming episode of NBC’s 30 Rock. The Oscar winner confirmed the news via Twitter. No information yet on the role he would play, but my bet is on an oddball character, possibly in the show’s 100th episode. Hanks, whose last TV series role was 30 years ago in several episodes of Family Ties, joins other high-profile feature guest actors on 30 Rock this season such as Matt Damon and Susan Sarandon. (As himself, Hanks has appeared on a couple of shows, including Life with Bonnie and The Naked Truth.) Hanks previously worked with Fey and 30 Rock executive producer Lorne Michaels on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which Hanks has hosted eight times. He recently did two skits on Jimmy Kimmel’s post-Oscar show.

It’s about time hanks does more comedy. He was a brilliant comedic actor when he first started out. Go watch Splash, he was the best. Hope he does some comedy films in the future!
Hanks appeared on an episode of NBC’s “The Naked Truth” since the Family Ties episodes.
Yes, they mentioned that in the article. Keep reading. I only know it cause I worked on THE NAKED TRUTH. Mr Hanks was the epitome of class, arrived by himself (I met him at his front gate to show him where his dressing room was and he insisted on giving me a ride back to my office instead), no entourage, happily signed every script and photo and paper put in front of him, hung out with his fellow actors in the green room area the entire time as opposed to retreating to his dressing room and kept his humor and kindness intact throughout a very long shoot day/night. And this was one year after he won his back to back Oscars. I loved him before that day and loved him even more after.
OMG! I forgot how brilliant Tom Hanks was on “Family Ties.” That hilarious yet tragic uncle character.
Comparing Tom Hanks to Oprah is an excellent example.
I’m English, but I think of Oprah and Tom Hanks as kind of US Royalty in terms of what they have accomplished and how they exemplify the ‘American Dream’.
I’m excited to see this episode
Don’t be embarrassed! I logged on to make the same comment. Maybe we remember because the scene he was in was hysterical and the only memorable scene in the series.
Guest star after guest star and their ratings still stink. Give it up and cancel it already. Obviously no one watches.
@John, 30 Rock is obviously only for 5% of the people, if you know what I mean.
The other 95% of the people (just like you) can go watch iCarly, Hannah Montanah and Glee. Have a nice day.
I tried to watch it the other night but couldn’t bear to. It just simply isn’t funny. It’s a shame because I love Tina Fey and want her to succeed, but the desperation is almost palpable. Laugh, dammit. Laugh!
Desperation? I mainly started watching it because it used to come on right after The Office a couple of years ago. I wasn’t impressed at first, but it DEFINITELY grew on me! I do think that this season hasn’t been as funny as the first three but I still love it. They’ve got a different kind of humor for that show and once you get it its great!
I concur… I love everyone involved but this show feels like the showrunner (and the entire writing staff) are looking for other jobs.
Loved the concept of last weeks episode but it was TERRIBLE.
I loved Aaron Sorkin on Thursday’s episode. And ofcourse his famous talking-while-walking – what he does best and is so Sorkin-Signature.
’30ROCK’ is such a premium comedy.
Three years ago…
Now it feels like the writing staff is out looking for new work.
Have to stick up for Fey and Co. This has been the most consistent and hilarious year since season two. I think some of the new writers that were brought in have jump started this season. And remember that Jack Donaghy is only comparable to Hercules, the Highlander and God himself!
I won’t help, NBC has distoryed “Must see Thursday”. CBS is now the sit-com king. They once ruled Thursday night, now NBC is where comedy went to die.
NBC hasn’t been “Must see Thursday” since Friends ended SEVEN years ago. SEVEN years, get over it. I think the only argument is that they can’t launch a new comedy show. The Office is in season 7, 30 Rock is in season 5, and Parks & Recreation is in season 3. Everything else? Gone or going and never making it to a second season.
Except the comedy on NBC is actually smart. Even the worst episode of Community is better than that Big Bang Theory crap.
Oprah isn’t the Queen of my TV. Betty White – hmmmmm, 60 years +, at this point.
Baldwin & Hanks, time to send both of them off to the glue factory.
It won’t matter, NBC has ruined it’s Thursday night line up with a bunch of SNL has-beens. It’s now “Must Suck Thursday”, Hanks is no longger the draw he use to be.
Just because people call him ‘royalty’ doesn’t mean he’s any good, or funny for that matter. If crowd-pandering and middle-of-the-road BLAH roles constitute royalty then I’ve never been sold on Hanks, never. Not even Saving Private Ryan. Come on! Enough with this untalented careerist.
Don’t forget where Tom Hanks really started…the sitcom “Bosom Buddies.” He has a natural brilliant sense of comedy. He also did a guest shot in taxi in the flashback with Jim Ig. telling how he got into drugs… Great scene w him and Christopher Lloyd…

I agree Tom was good in Splash, but he was hilarious in Bosom Buddies!
