EXCLUSIVE: Angelina Jolie has just signed with United Talent Agency, which will represent her as a writer and director. She doesn’t have an agent for her acting work. The signing comes after she made her writing/directorial debut on a Bosnia-set feature that is in postproduction. That untitled film was financed and produced by GK Films. She clearly wants to do more in that area, and UTA becomes Jolie’s first agency representation as a filmmaker. She continues to be represented in all areas by longtime manager Geyer Kosinski and attorney Robert Offer.
“Angelina has a distinct and powerful creative voice, and having read her work and seen parts of the film she’s directing, we’re very certain that she’s entering a new and fruitful phase of her extraordinary career,” said UTA partner Rich Klubeck, who’s leading the team of agents representing Jolie’s filmmaking pursuits.

Smart sign. Hope the movie works. We can always use another talented female director.
i adore her and i know that whatever path she takes will be a hit.talent so far above the norm and im tired of the naysayers .go find someone else to trash. Angelibna is a great actor mother and partner she will show us all what she can do.
I am fingers crossed she continues to direct great films, and touches on topics that are her passion, and will make viewers of her films “think” She is a lovely woman!
Work it, Rich! This is awesome for UTA! So impressive that she didn’t take the CAA route.
she already tried that
Well, sort of. She signed with them in mid-2005 and then proceeded to spend the next year pregnant and dumped CAA shortly after giving birth to her and Pitt’s daughter Shiloh. CAA never really did any work for her, but after a certain amount of fuckery Pitt put up with from his then agent Kevin Huvane due to the Huvane’s close relationship with Jennifer Aniston poor Bryan Lourd had to tap-dance through hell to keep Pitt from walking, too. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall the day Lourd and the rest found out that Pitt was half way out the door with his baby mama. Jolie obviously felt no such allegiance to Lourd and figured why give CAA 10% when she could spend that money on the charities she funds.
I thought transitioning from actor to director was to save face when you couldn’t get acting roles anymore…
Good for her though. I am actually curiously excited to see her film debut.
maybe she’s just ahead of the curve and has decided to age gracefully. although she’s still quite young. relatively speaking.
Why say “save face” when one changes direction? Obviously she is diversifying her options and progressing unlike others who hang-on to their dwindling star.
And they signed Marlee Matlin for sound design and Stevie wonder for cinematography.
Okay, that was cruel, but I’m still giggling. I feel such shame…and yet I can’t stop reading these deep, smart & insightful comments…is there not some support group I might join?
Nicely played, Mr. Klubeck, nicely played!
Great sign UTA, what did Geyer request? get?
Great to see her trying new things and branching out from in front of the camera. We see it so often with men..
Angie is amazing.. can’t wait for her first film.. I hope it does well.
She has two credits as a director (A Place in Time, Untitled Bosnia Movie) and two credits as a writer so far (Notes from my travel, Untitled Bosnia Movie). It’s good to take risks and be more creative
With this sign, UTA cements their place among the Big Three, behind CAA and WME. Who does ICM even represent anymore?
It’s for directing and writing, take a chill pill, unless she’s going to BE in her own films, this ain’t that big a deal and will most likely clog UTA’s MP LIT and Indie finance depts with the headaches of trying to finance films SHE IS NOT IN — have fun at AFM, Cannes, Berlin, etc…
Now if she’s going to be in them…then this is a big f-in’ deal.
A comment on having trouble financing Jolie directed films that she isn’t in – Mike only got part of the story correct on the financing for the Bosnian war film that Jolie recently directed. Unlike a lot of people Jolie isn’t afraid to put her own money where her mouth is. She stated in an interview in Budapest just as the film was wrapping that Graham King put up HALF of the money and she and Pitt put up the other half of the money. Also, the budget was $15 million, so it’s not like they made the movie for peanuts. If more actors who claim they want to direct did the same, then maybe they wouldn’t be claiming for 5 consecutive years that they’re going to make a certain movie – and it never gets made because they can’t find anyone to finance it, yet their sitting on a load of cash in their multiple personal bank accounts. Insert your own names…

How did you raise the budget?
I gave the script to Graham King whom I did The Tourist with, and he said he`d support the project, and Brad and I also put our money in. We had a big talk about doing it with local people and no names. It had to be that way. And it got to a point where I almost couldn`t not do it! I didn`t want to be a director, it somehow just fell so into place. I had one day when I realized it all fell into place and I had that panic moment of oh my god… what am I doing? I don`t know how to do this. I`ve never done this. I don`t know what I`m getting into and getting myself into. And it`s not a simple story and it`s a sensitive story, and it`s the people`s history and the cast is from this area, and I want to make sure I do right by them. I had trouble sleeping for a little while. But it`s been the greatest film experience.
There is no information anywhere what the film cost so I don’t know where you got your figures from, and the interview did not say she put up HALF of the money, she did put her own money is all we know but not how much.
I have always thought for a long time this will be the next logical step for her. She is clearly very intelligent and talented and so far has refused to be pigeon holed as an actress who can only talk about fashion and fitness regime.
Kudos to her, hopefully this will open more doors for young women who are interested in more than being in fornt of the camera.
Go Angelina, I will be rooting for you. You are one of a kind in a town with so many cookie cutter types.
The movie is an Independent film.. therefore the budget has to cap in order for that to be the case. And regarding the budget there was an article about that 15 million quote; just don’t have the time to search. The actors are not known actors in the US. And she used local people and a lot of unknowns.
I like that she said in a recent interview that she liked the thought of providing opportunities for new talents. So yes I see her doing more Independent films. But we see that from the Oscars this year that those films are now becoming what people are wanting; instead of the usual over the top blockbusters or 3, 4 or whatever sequels.
and yes she is one of a kind and I celebrate that because you don’t get the ORIGINALs that often anymore.
Gee I wonder who Stacey is talking about here when she specifically mentions 5 years? If more actors who claim they want to direct did the same, then maybe they wouldn’t be claiming for 5 consecutive years that they’re going to make a certain movie – and it never gets made because they can’t find anyone to finance it, yet their sitting on a load of cash in their multiple personal bank accounts.
If she’s willing to keep putting her own $ in, then UTA bagged a big elephant. But I doubt she and Brad are going to keep doing that. Easy way to blow your fortune. And they ain’t dumb.
More likely she’s going to want them to find the scratch and if the films are political, best of luck.
There seems to be this general misconception about Angie and Brad being political. What they are in fact are two politically attuned humanitarians. I expect her movie will reflect that.
UTA has always been the solid number 3 behind the big two. See: Judd Apatow.
OMG!
Cool. I’m looking forward to seeing what she does behind the camera.
Anyway, if Barbara Streisand could figure out how to direct a full-length film, I don’t see why she can’t.
this is one of those things that’s easy to announce and hard to succeed at. give it 12 months
Bravo. Time for more women to write and direct. Will support her projects. Maybe the doors will now open wider for others.
She seems to broaden the boundary of the female-actor in HW. And she has not chosen CAA – that’s enough to show this woman’s coolness and braveness. At least one-mega-super star is not a member of CAA castle.
Got to work in her first film here in Hungary – I was a bit skeptic before, but she was a real pro and she made the set have a great vibe (despite the tough topic of the movie). We filmed the whole film in just 40days – not many directors can pull that off. I think she clearly has a future in writing/directing aswell.
Testament to how efficient and organize she is.
strings and puppets
Cruel ANONYMOUS…cruel. Couldn’t help but laugh at it. All in good fun. Just a joke. So Angie’s gonna be directing and writing, huh? Gotta luv it. Why give an unknown a chance even if they’re more talented in that area ? Guess it’s good to be on the inside.
Oh piss off. I am so sick of this complaint. “Why give this role to so and so she is taking it from more talented actors, directors, etc etc”. So what. Angelina has proven herself as a talented actress and apparently a competent writer/director and with everyone she’s worked with in Hollywood- a true pro. This complaint is only getting lodged because she’s Angelina Jolie. I’m sure you would not be saying that if it was James Franco getting signed. And for REPRESENTATION no less. Oh, let us shed tears for the hundreds that will now not get work because UTA signed Jolie as a directing talent.
Somebody call Penn and Teller cause this is some bull___
Seems to be one of the few actresses that does her own thing and takes some risks. Even more impressive that she is completely independent of the hollywood bigwigs…CAA, publicists, agent etc.
That’s what she wants you to believe. But she has a whole circle of industry people who feed her scripts and get her roles from other actresses once she sniffs up something that looks appealing to her. It’s such crap for her to act like she doesn’t have any hollywood industry people contributing to her career. And she does have representatives who speak for her, stylists, and people she said gets her scripts and basically do everything that’s done for any star.
Angie still doesn’t have an agent (and never did despite signing with CAA and being assigned to Matt del Piano for a couple of months). She has NEVER had a publicist. She didn’t even have an industry manager until she was 19 years old and had filmed 5 flics. Every script for practically any type of female role in an age range from 30-45 is sent to Geyer. Anyone who doesn’t believe that AJ has an absolute lock on any role she wants just by waving slightly in its direction isn’t breathing air.
She wants to have more credibility and it feeds her ego more. She probably saw Kathryn Bigelow win her Oscar for the Hurt Locker and wanted to be that.
Or, she sees her as one of many women carrying through with their visions from beginning to end and takes inspiration from what living in the modern age allows women of ability and resource to do if they care to challenge themselves. I hope you are a guy and not a woman making such ungenerous comments.
I think Jolie’s reasons for doing it is for her ego. She’s basically exploiting a very sensitive and complicated story for awards and acclaim, so everyone can say “Angelina Jolie is such an inspiration. She is so great because she directed a film”. Lots of actors have directed.
But watch people will talk like she’s invented the wheel, like they did last year when Salt was out and she was going around saying her Salt character was the first female action role that wasn’t in a fantasy film. Which is not true.
Too bad I never once heard her claim her character was the first female action star.
And do you look at all directors so cynically? Ego is involved for any director/actor. They wouldn’t be in the biz if they didn’t have a high opinion of themselves. But that doesn’t mean they’re not also inspired and motivated by the projects they choose to dedicate years of their life to. Get over you irrational Jolie hate and try to judge her films as you would any other actor/director. You sound like a moron talking like she’s choosing to work only for attention. Frankly, if that was all she wanted, a $15 million directing effort that will likely be seen by few but torn apart by many, isn’t really the way to go.
She said no such thing. She said SALT was the first action role that SHE has ever done that was not based in fantasy. And come to think of it now, it probably has the highest box office of any original (read- not part of a franchise) female-driven action movie. It is actually quite the friggin feat if you ask me.
No she didn’t. She said it was the first time she’d seen a woman in an action role that wasn’t fantasy. She said it several times during the press tour. Look it up. She never once gave props to other female action stars who paved the way like Sigourney Weaver, because she wants to be queen bee. She’s not supportive of women. No wonder she has no women friends. I feel like everything she does is for her ego. And that’s the only reason why she’s doing this Oscar baity movie, so she can have another credit as a director and be seen as some great artist and she wants to be queen bee. If it weren’t for the frenzy she creates about her personal life, she would be nothing. But she sells magazines for the industry. Salt was the only film she’s carried entirely on her own to success and people act like she invented the wheel. Go figure.
anonymous, take Amy, and go back and fester at Desperate Females First where you belong. The average reader of Deadline comments might not notice it but you’re not fooling me, I know every time an article about Jolie gets posted here the five of you losers that post at FF form a coalition to plant negative comments and make it seem like Jolie is hated by the general public- when really, when you take away the psycho “Female First” “ladies” you have basically 90% positive comments about Angelina. She’s incredible and people are simply stunned by her drive and success.
And even if she did say that a reality-based female action movie hasn’t been done before, is she wrong? What is she taking away from Sigourney? She did ALIENS. Linda Hamilton- TERMINATOR. Both big fantasy/sci fi films. But as I recall she was talking about her past action roles- Wanted, Smith, Tomb Raider which were all cartoonish compared to Salt.
I think she has enough credibility. she doesn’t have an agent, publicist or any of the other bull most celebs (celeb males) at her level have. even her baby daddy has a publicist/agent and the works working on his career. If this works out I think her ego will be rightfully gigantic.
Pitt doesn’t have a publicist anymore. He fired Cindy Gaugenti nearly 3 years ago. He finally tumbled to what Jolie has known for years – why pay someone to deny gossip about you. Let people say what they want and play by your own rules. His long-time manager acts as his PR person for his films and charity work just as Kosinki does for Jolie.
Well, as long as someone can do the jobs you can’t do on a film, anyone can be a director. Even Orson Wells said so.
Angie is amazing. love her more. She is not only super beautiful but also super talented.
Aniston has always been talking in most of her interviews about wanting to be a director, and she hasnt done a thing yet except that 10 min film. On the other hand Angie doesnt talk about it at all and boom she has already directed a full length film. Angie is less talk more action but Jennifer is always talk but no action.
Im sure Brad knows that by now. lol!
Whenever Angie is the topic of convo, invariably somebody brings up Aniston. It’s like Pavlov’s dog for God’s sakes. ANGIE. DIRECTING. FOCUS.
Any time there is a story about Jolie, the Brangelunatics show up.
Linking these two will never end. Twenty years from now Angie will have a grandchild and the tabloids will be saying Jen is “ready ” to have a grandchild.
Good on her i hope the movie does well, we need more women directors.
So many comments by people who don’t have a clue what they’re talking about… wow.
Good luck to her. At least Jolie’s doing something heartfelt, meaningful and a bit more challenging plus she’s putting up the coin. You can’t argue with that.
