USA Network has given the green light to Prey, a two-hour movie starring Mark Harmon, as the cable network continues to expand its original programming portfolio beyond hourlong scripted series.
The film is based on the best-selling Prey series of novels by John Sandford. Harmon will play the central character in the books, Minneapolis Deputy Police Chief Lucas Davenport. The movie is based on the 10th of the 20 novels in the series, Certain Prey, in which Davenport goes against a lethal hit woman and a ferociously cunning killer determined to hunt him down. Chris Gerolmo (Citizen X) penned the script for the movie, which is slated to begin production in May. Jaffe-Braunstein Films is producing, with Michael Jaffe, Howard Braunstein and Harmon executive producing. “Mark Harmon could read the phone book and we’d probably want to put it on the air!” USA’s president original programming Jeff Wachtel quipped.
While Prey is being done as a one-off, with with 19 other books in the series, it could potentially turn into a movie franchise in the mold of Tom Selleck’s Jesse Stone series of films on CBS. Prey is the second original movie USA has greenlighted in the past six months after largely staying away from the genre for the past five years. The other movie, the Burn Notice prequel Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, premieres on April 17. Both Sam Axe and Prey are extension of signature USA franchises: its flagship series, Burn Notice, and its top off-network series, NCIS, which stars Harmon. But the movies are also part of USA’s new strategy of broadening its offerings with reality, half-hour comedy, movies and mini-series.
USA’s last true original movie was the 2005 Three Wise Guys. In 2008, the network ran the pilot To Love and Die as a movie as well as the outside production Bait Shop. And in 2007, USA aired its last mini-series for now, hit The Starter Wife.
Paradigm-repped Harmon recently signed a new two-year deal to continue on the hit CBS drama NCIS. John Sandford is the pseudonym of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling novelist John Roswell Camp.

I’ve read all the books, all of Sandofrd’s stuff, for the past 20 whatever years – love his work. I’ve always seen Davenport as a (younger) Scott Glenn-type – but Harmon should be ok, as long as the script is true to the books and tight – and they shoot it in the Twin Cities! None of this “Vancouver-for Mpls.” crap!
Hey, dummy, have you seen Scot Glenn lately?
FYI!! Mark Harmon is 60…the new 40!! Scott Glenn is 70. Do the math!! Not to mention Mark Harmon is much easier on the eyes!!
To Anonymous et al: Mr Haneline did say “a younger Scott Glenn”. He in no way implied that the current Mr. Glenn should portray Lucas. Maybe what you would all prefer is a younger actor altogether to play Davenport. That is both the blessing and the curse of reading the books.
By the way:I do think that these comments should be filtered for propriety. Calling people “dummy” and yelling!!! is just rude.
Love Bruce Campbell as AXE!!!
How can USA afford him? And why would he want to work during his hiatus from NCIS? He must earn a fortune on that series.
HE IS SUCH A GREAT ACTOR. HE DOESN’T GET PAID AS MUCH MONEY AS HE DESERVES. HE’S BEEN ACTING FOR SUCH A LONG TIME. HE DOES A LOT OF WORK FOR THE TELEVISION INDUSTRY AND SHOULD GET MORE MONEY.
I live in the Twin Cities, and I’d love it if this filmed here, but of course USA will film it in Vancouver or Toronto, and everyone around here can watch the movie and laugh at how inaccurate it is. Good times!
I used to work at Jaffe/Braunstein Films. Trust me, it will be shot in Vancouver …
Love Sandford’s books (read all of them) and love Mark Harmon.
@Diane M : Mark Harmon actually did some movies where he was almost earned nothing. Weather Girl comes to mind. He likes to play roles that challenge him. I’m just so happy, right now. A perfect antihero role.
Wasn’t there an adaptation of another Sandford Prey book a few years ago starring Eriq Lasalle?
Mind Prey 1999
Mark Hermon é um grande ator alem de ser um gato, vale a pena ver qualquer filme com ele.Não perco um só ncis.
I think its a great choice he is an awesome actor. I love’em.
I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING THE USA PREY MOVIE. PLEASE DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN USA WILL AIR IT?
november 6th on usa
OK I’ve seen where Mark Harmon is going to be in a USA movie PREY, but when is it going to air? Have I missed it already? I am a huge Mark fan have been following his career for years.(Since Summer School)I am soooo looking forward to seeing him in more tv shows/movies!!!!!!!!
Mark Harmon is an awesome actor, but I always see Lucas Davenport as the Jon Hamm type of imposing, well dressed “bad boy in a tuxedo” character.
I have read most of the series always thought Brian Dennehy would fit, but I like Mark Harmon, looking forward to the movie
Love the Prey books and am excited about Mark Harmon playing Lucas Davenport! He’s awesome.
I am a big Mark Harmon fan in NCIS and other movies but I have read every John Sandford book and Harmon is miscast. He is too cute, too small and not ruthless enough. Casting him as Lucas is like casting Owen Wilson as Virgil Flowers. Big mistake.
Looking forward to Mark Harmon and the Prey movie. Hope he continues the series going forward.
I think Harmon will be OK. Jim Cavesal comes to mind as well if his Person of Interest doesn’t continue. Love the prey books, like virgil flowers as well and like watching and reading Jesse Stone series.
I anticipated!
I watched!
I loved it!
A series? Most definitely!
I missed the movie last night. Will it be on again any time soon?
Was dying with anticipation waiting for Certain Prey to air. I was not happy after watching it. I LOVE Mark Harmon but he is NOT Lucas Davenport by any stretch of the imagination. I really think Lucas was MUCH younger in that book and tougher looking not to mention having the appearance of a Native American in his coloring. Harmon just wasn’t right. He is Jethro Gibbs not Lucas Davenport. I suppose I will have to settle for my books and imagination and forget about bringing Lucas to life on the screen.
I did not get to see Certain Prey. When will USA air this movie again? I hope it will be soon. I love all of his movies and NCIS
I’m with Barbara H. Please reveal when USA will air this movie again.
