BURBANK, CA, March 2, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.
Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She most recently starred in the family hit “Secretariat.” She next stars in the HBO feature “Cinema Verite,” opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane’s long list of film credits also includes “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Hollywoodland,” “Must Love Dogs,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Perfect Storm,” “My Dog Skip,” “Chaplin,” “The Cotton Club” and “A Little Romance,” to name only a portion.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Yeah! I’m a huge fan, she’s a very talented actress (and one hot momma). This film is looking better all the time.
Agreed. They are putting together a great cast. Looking forward to seeing this one on the big screen (vs dvd).
I was all set to complain about the age casting – but she’s 46 and he’s 27, so for once, nice work.
Diane Lane + Kevin Costner = Great Casting.
Fabulous! LOVE her. She’s great in anything she does.
Oh Zack, it is so obvious what look you are cribbing from. It is surprising since it is such a departure from the comic books, and Snyder is usually thought of as a comic book guy. But I guess more teens are familiar with the show than the comic books.
It’s obvious Snyder is cribbing from Smallville, but it’s smart. Snyder is smart enough to know that nobody reads the comic books and they haven’t for a long time. The Superman comic book gets 60,000 readers. The public only really knows these characters from the old movies, Smallville, and maybe some cartoons. The last Superman film cribbed heavily from the old movies and was judged a failure. What is left for Snyder really, except to lean on and draw inspiration from Smallville? So, he’ll take the most loved parts of Smallville and fashion his reboot. This is SMART. Give Snyder some credit here. He knows what he is doing.
And Smallville is a great show! I have heard the opinions of the naysayers, but they are wrong
What do you mean he’s cribbing? How is he copying anyone’s look?
Diane Lane is certainly a great actress. That much must be said. The casting choices, rumored and official, made for this movie have been very interesting so far, although Lane still looks somewhat young, and Cavill doesn’t look like a college-age kid. I’m not sure which way the ages of the characters are supposed to skew. It’s not quite the same as Angelina Jolie playing Colin “Alexander” Farrell’s mother, but the age thing was the first, and really the only, question that came to mind. Other than that, I’m sure she’ll be a fine Ma Kent.

Alright, enough with bitching about age casting. With today’s make up and technology Hollywood can make an 8 year old look 80. Anything can be done. And anything that make up lacks magnificent Diane Lane can make up for (no pun intended).
That’s why it’s called acting.
Isn’t she a bit old to be playing mother roles? In Hollywood years at 47 she should be playing his great great grandmother
Good for her, but she seems way to young and hot (even if she really isnt) to be the kid of Martha Kent we’re accustomed to.
Does this mean Costner is Pa Kent?
Although I too love Diane Lane, she is still way too young to be Ma Kent. Tons of great actresses over fifty and sixty. They are ruining this movie by the minute.
I think more people than Nolan/Snyder may realize are major ‘SMALLVILLE’ fans, and if this movie treads on everything that show has done in the past 10 years (that’s right: 10 YEARS!) then we’re gonna be all like, “Okay, we’ve seen this already, and we liked the way it was done, so why are we watching this?”…
“we’re gonna be all like”
Mr. Green,
Like, are all of you Smallville fanboys, like, twelve, like?
Many of us interested in this movie don’t want it to be just another version of Smallville. Why would we want a big screen version of something that has already been on TV for 10 years?
Open your mind. Accept something new. Fanboys always get so fixated on the one thing they like that they can’t see the virtues of anything else. It’s a very immature quality that they have.
I do recall there being a rumor that Nolan wanted Tom Welling to do a cameo in Batman Begins, which is interesting…
lane plus costner equals great american movie star pairing.
It isn’t that Lane is too young, she’s just gorgeous (at any age). I think it’s a very unexpected but excellent choice.
WOW, I am so old. My first thought was how is it possible for her to be anyone’s mom.
Besides the fact that she looks so awesome, she will forever be in her 20s to me. I don’t know why, but I will never see her age.
For those of us who discovered Diane Lane in A LITTLE ROMANCE with Olivier when she was about 11, this is a shock to the system indeed.
It’s time for someone to get that Lane woman a TV series so I can watch her work every week.
She’s great!
It only feels right that the choice should look so much like Annette O’Toole, who made such a mark on the role. Kudos.
How does Lane look ANYTHING like O’Toole?
Great choice!
Snyder’s casting continues to mystify me. How extensive are these flashbacks? Are they going to cast a young Clark Kent too? How much time will be eaten up in all this, in a film that desperately needs a driving action focus?
Oooooh I hope there is a lot angst. A lot of dark angst. I hope there is a lot of young dark Clark Kent angsting over whether to be Superman or not. And crying and angsting with his parents. I want really long scenes of that. Dark Angsty Superman, that’s what everybody wants and will pay to see.
I think it’s safe to say that Martha Kent is now a
Super-milf.
This is exactly what I was imagining! To me, Annette O’Toole and John Schneider completely defined the roles. They were the perfect John and Martha Kent. So I am thrilled at Diane Lane and Costner, who are so reminiscent of them. Snyder continues to make great choices.
Ma Kent is 18 when she finds baby Kal-El?! Really Snyder? Really? You are so ridiculous. This is so dumb.
She was Hayden Christensen’s mom in Jumper!
