Sounds like despite the cool trailer, Dimension must think they have a dog in Apollo 18?
Piranha at Thanksgiving? Hehe.
So much for APOLLO 18 beating DARK MOON to the screen…
Wow, they’re REALLY delusional if they think Piranha 3DD can remotely stand up to the other Thanksgiving releases.
Sounds like despite everyone saying the Weinsteins are back, they have a schlock lineup of super cheap films.
They’re also still constantly delaying movies for no reason. Also a schlock lineup of super cheap films is not really new to them at all.
I believe the Weinsteins are most definitely back. Read the Vanity Fair article and listen to the NPR interview with Harvey. Something’s changed in him. Let’s face it: no-one is doing what he does. He is one of the very few producers in this business with real vision and courage to take a risk on something he believes in. He has been responsible for some of the best movies of the last twenty years. He is not going to give up any time soon. I wish him all the very best of luck.
Apollo 18 is a steaming pile of dog doo. Jan is the garbage dump. That’s what happens when you make a crap movie out of a crap script. never want to root for anyone’s failure, but that project is insulting to first year film students.
I know, right. With the possible horror/alien aspect, wouldn’t you want to release it around Halloween? Normally you dumb your trash in January. Not a good sign, and APOLLO 18 looked promising.
They must hate Apollo 18 to dump it next January!
I know Harvey and Bob make all the decisions, but how is Bladarah, or is it Sarablad, handling the marketing department?
Only the idiots at The Weinstein Company would make a sequel to a movie that barely made any money if it made any at all(Piranha 3DD).
January, as a whole, isn’t really a dumping ground anymore.
But the first weekend still very much is.
Dave,
While you are correct that it seems to make no sense to put Piranha at Thanksgiving, the original DID make money…a good deal, actually, compared to its budget.
Against a $24m budget, it didn’t do so hot stateside, but was a small hit overseas, pulling in $81.5m worldwide, plus strong DVD sales. When you make more than 3x your budget, most studios are gonna look to see if they can get a sequel squeezed out.
Yea, January is hot these days…but not that weekend of Jan. Bad news for Apollo 18.
Nobody is going to see that SJP movie.
I think Scream 4 scared off Apollo 18. Opening the weekend before, its buzz is getting over the top. And 18 doesn’t seem to fit in at any other time of this already packed 2011. Maybe October but that already has Paranormal Activity 3 slated. Who knows. Just a thought.
Apollo 18 might have more heat if the trailer didn’t show every single twist and plot development in the entire movie.
yeah. TWC. ask them why they haven’t released BUTTER?
TWC is a fucked up company juggling god knows what to balance their books.
BTW – jeremy Henderson – you’ve been punked by a very good and jolly salesman named Harvey.
I have to say I thought the trailer for Apollo 18 made it look interesting, although I thought it would get delayed due to its short production timeframe. With the hype for it getting huge after the first trailer I’m guessing Weinstein might want to ride that hype more. That or they have a dud.
“My Idiot Brother”? Who pitched this, Harvey or Bob?
i dont know how she does it sounds like a real stinker.
GREAT SLATE GUYS!!
I saw Apollo 18 at a screening a few weeks ago. Before, I was so excited by the premise and the trailer looked awesome. The movie is awful and does not deliver on any level. You never see ANYTHING and it is only 110 minutes running time. It does not surprise me that they dumped this with a January release date and I would not be surprised if it goes right to DVD.
There was a time when the Weinsteins had intelligent , independent thinking executives making these decisions for them. They obviously lack that talent today. Bad pic , bad dates . Formula for failure
Bad movies , bad dates. There used to be excellent execs that made these decisions for the brothers. Looks like no one is left to stop them from making bad decisions
