The director revealed the news in an interview with a Los Angeles Times blog today from Paris, where he was publicizing Sucker Punch. Zach Snyder phoned the 36-year-old three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams with the news today. “There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder said. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”
He said the role is “a linchpin” to the project and will have contemporary appeal and spirit. ”It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him.” Adams’ recent movies include The Fighter, Enchanted, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. She is being courted by Adam Shankman to join Rock of Ages, playing the journalist who falls into a bedroom romp with Tom Cruise’s decadent rock star character. And she is attached to that long-in-the-works Janis Joplin biopic to play the 1960s singer directed by Fernando Meirelles. Both Margot Kidder and Kate Bosworth have played movie versions of Metropolis newspaper reporter Lois Lane, the primary love interest of Superman in the DC Comics created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster dating back to 1938.

Much better fit than Hathaway as Selina Kyle.
Weird comment.
who is WB gonna pick to play director?
LOL
The question on everybody’s mind!
Get over losing the role.
so happy for her!! if you put in the work and are honest, good things are bound to happen.. never had a bad or selfish encounter with her professionally
I couldn’t agree more. If this town was made up of more people like Amy Adams, it would be a much better place.
I’ve never worked with her, however I can tell she is a hard working and humble actress. There are enough evil bratty actresses out there and I’m glad that none of them got the part. They are really taking casting Lois Lane seriously!!!! Amy Adams is an Oscar Nominee and a serious actress. She practically changes personalities and sometimes looks from role to role. Lois Lane is a hard character to perfect, since the last person who played the part in Superman Returns played it one-dimensional. Kate Bosworth just came off as annoyingly b#tchy. Yeah right, if Lois Lane was simply b#tchy which she is not. Kate Bosworth was a flat chested and annoying. Amy Adams can bring in everything that she lacked. Amy Adams can bring in:
1. Subtle humor (which I have not seen in any of the Lois Lane’s on TV or movies). Teri Hatcher acting like a dumb blond dork does not count. Hell Amy Adams is at Christopher Reeve level (who was roomates with Robin Williams in college).
2. She can bring in teary drama. Which let’s face it, Terry Hatcher could NOT do on her best day. I’ve never seen that level of acting from Erica Durance either. But, at least Erica Durance tries to act unlike Terry Hatcher.
3. She can make her character’s emotions three dimensional.
4. If Amy Adams amps up the s#x appeal and makes Lois Lane as s#xy as possible than it just might be the greatest Lois Lane of all time. The hottest I’ve seen Amy Adams is in Night at the Museum 2 when she was in the skin tight pants. I hope the camera man and wardrobe person is not gay on this one since if they don’t take advantage of showing her perfect hiney than they are stupid and don’t care about this movie making money. Kate Bosworth was dressed in a nun’s outfit for Superman Returns.
Amy Adams will be great as long as she steps up the s#x appeal. Since as we all know Lois Lane can very easily be a turn off depending on how she is portrayed. She will need the support of the Director, costume designer and studio to pull off the first Lois Lane that is not simply an annoying brat. This is the best casting choice possible. So, let’s hope she is given the opportunity to create the greatest Lois Lane.
Thank you Flack. Your wall-of-text shall be remembered come bonus time.
Flat-chested?

I love Amy Adams but I just can’t see her as Lois. Then again, I can’t see Henry Cavill as Superman or Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
Kevin Costner as Pa Kent works for me though.
I agree. Some weird casting going down here.
And she and Diane look like mother and daughter. That’s going to be strange. Supes boffing his mother lookalike. Ewww.
I was getting ready to say that Diane Lane isn’t old enough to be Amy Adams mother, they aren’t even a decade apart in age, yet she’s playing superman’s mom?? weird.
Maybe if they’d cast my favorite ladies of the Whedonverse (Jewel Staite, Monea Baccarin, Summer Glau) as Lois, there wouldn’t be such an ‘eww’ factor from most people.
Lane isn’t supposed to be “that” sexy. Beautiful, yes, but she was never described in the comics as being drop-dead, crotch-tighteningly, mouth-wide-open gorgeous.
She was never described as looking like Superman’s mother either. Ewww is right.
Isn’t she a little old for this?
Yeah, I agree. Everybody should be teenagers!
Ha! Lois is robbing the cradle… isn’t Henry Cavil 30? Ah well, in all seriousness, she looks younger than her age. I would have guessed 28 actually if it weren’t mentioned here.
I think she is a perfect age for Lois Lane. I think Kate Bosworth, as a Puliter Prize winning Lois Lane at age 22, was a poor choice.
I love the fact that Amy Adams is getting the role. Kate Bosworth was BAD BAD BAD!
Amy Adams is 36 (will be 37 during filming), but she can easily pass for AT LEAST 5 years younger (see: Enchanted, Doubt). I think the real question remains what the hell were they thinking in hiring 22-year-old Kate Bosworth???
Adams is sharp, fiesty, tenacious, and has the maturity to hold presence on screen. She will make an awesome Lois.
re: what the hell were they thinking in hiring 22-year-old Kate Bosworth???
They thought she’d be able to grow into the role. It didn’t work with her in the role, but I understand the thinking at the time. And maybe if there had been other Superman films with Routh/Bosworth, the gambit would have paid off.
I think Amy Adams is a great actress, very talented and obviously beautiful. I like this casting choice; good to have a mature, real woman playing Lois rather than a young woman in her early 20′s, late teens. I wouldn’t even mind if they let Lois be a red-head in the film.
Then everyone would be calling her Lana Lang and pointing out what a huge miscast she was. You best be believing Snyder will get her hair dyed and fried pronto.
I never though any of the actors in Superman Returns were to blame. I totally blamed the writing. The directing and acting was good for the script they had. Routh and Bosworth should be given another shot. Especially Routh. I think he nailed the innocent naive part of Clark perfectly. Cavil seems to suave to play bumbling Clark. It’s going to seem forced.
36 is too old? Whenever a male lead is cast along side an actress 15 to 20 years their junior, rarely a grumble is made.
Agreed, commenting on her age is ridiculous. Men come into there own as leading men in there 30′s and 40′s and never a mention of age. It’s a sad reflection on the Entertainment world and the world in general to try and decrease the value of women as they age.
But she is too old for the role. She’ll be close to 38 when they wrap the film, 39 when it comes out. If they actually get a hit out of this thing she’ll be a mid-40′s Lois by the time they finish a third film. It’s insane.
They were pushing it when they cast a mid-20′s Toby McGuire as Spiderman but this is ridiculous. And only casting people would claim she looks like she’s in her 20′s. It’s one thing to play an arc from mid-20′s to early 30′s like she did in The Fighter. It’s completely different to play Lois Lane in a possible series that could span 6-8 years.
Mid-40s? That’s impossible! You must be a child.
Eh, she won’t be playing Lois beyond this movie anyway. As much as I hope producer Nolan will reign in Snyder’s flashy but somewhat shallow film making style, I don’t think this will succeed and spawn future sequels.
Exactly! Fanboys are stupid. They whine and complain about anything…they are just trolls.
Did Snyder announce this today to divert attention from Sucker Punch’s poor performance?
Yes
HAHAHAHAHA
Snyder was punched in the nads by DIARY OF A WIMPY KID 2!
*** DIARY OF A WIMPY KID 2!!!! ***
HAHAHAHA
“Did Snyder announce this today to divert attention from Sucker Punch’s poor performance?”
Yes
Look at all the ageism!
She is too old. At 36, we want 3 Superman movies made like Spiderman did. Thus putting her in mid-forties when the third movie is made. Bad choice. LOVE HER, but bad choice for the franchise. She may need to be replaced at some point after the first movie.
Too old? How do you figure? Name me ONE actress on the strength of her name along that can open a picture? Angelina Jolie did, with SALT and she’s 35. Katherine Heigl does pretty well w/ rom coms and she’s what? 33? In case you didn’t notice, the 20-something set isn’t really getting it done. Red Riding Hood flopped, Sucker Punch flopped. Kristen Stewart, 20, outside of Twilight, has yet to be tested in a wide releasing film, her indies don’t count. So until you youngun’s can bring the box office in, who the fck are you to be calling people ‘too old?’ The only thing 20-somethings seem to be good for, are reality tv shows like The Bachelor and Jersey Shore, leave the WOMEN to the big screen.
Agreed, I don’t see any actresses in there 20′s carrying anything or bringing the depth needed to complex characters that will stand the test of time and draw audiences in. I like Kristen Stewart and Amanda Seyfried, but we’ll see where they are in there 30′s.
Amy Adams has major box office appeal at the young age of 36.
Adams has the same box office appeal as Seyfried. Which is marginal. Just a decade older. Unfortunately, she also has a red-head’s skin, which often wrinkles early. She already sports significant crow’s feet. She looks lovely, but close ups show every bit of her age. She is at a point in her life where she has to make a decision. She can age naturally, and perhaps have a long career as an older woman, in the Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren mode. Or Amy can fight for her youth and end up as weird looking as Nicole Kidman, and harder to cast, as successive procedures always make actresses look weirder and weirder.
Whatareyou? Her agent?
Lois Land is not an old woman!
I thought the same thing. She’s about 30-something; right? And Lois lane is supposed to be 20ish.
Anyway, if they add anymore big-name $$$tars, the movie is going to bust the budget wide open.
They still need to cast a big star for the villain. The movie still doesn’t have that star capable of putting asses in seats and moving ticket sales. Plenty of celebs in the movie. Plenty of names people might know. But they are all meager draws. There has to be at least one real ticket-selling star in this movie.
You don’t need a big name for a movie like this. Ppl will go see it if its done well. In recent years we’ve seen plenty of big movies that did well without big name actors/actresses. IF YOU MAKE IT (RIGHT), THEY WILL COME.
Just like they flocked to SUCKER PUNCH. Plenty of celebs there. Names people might know. Too bad it didn’t have one star capable of selling tickets.
I think this is PERFECT casting. Amy Adams is wonderful, wonderful! Can’t wait for this movie!
Smart choice. She’s great.
Seems a peculiar choice. She’s talented but seems so light and fluffy for Lois Lane.
She certainly wasn’t light and fluffy in The Fighter.
Agreed. Amy is nice enough, but she is no Lois Lane. Miscast.
To be honest, I’m not even sure why she’d want to be associated with this mess.
Lots of money for little work. Her terrible acting in the movie will be blamed on Snyder, and won’t stick to her. Everybody knows about Snyder’s ham-handedness with actors. The acting in SUCKER PUNCH was so awful that they had to cut out all of the dialogue from the trailers. It will be interesting if they have to use the same tactic in the Superman trailers.
if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
I’m not blaming her for selling out. I’m sure it’s a lot of money. It also keeps her in the public eye. Snyder’s failures are not going to stick to her.
I was hoping for Lizzy Caplan.
Amy Adams is a fantastic actress, but not sure she’s got that sarcastic tough girl thing.
Lizzy Caplan would’ve been my choice, too. Cest la vie.
Yes, Amy Adams feels all wrong. But I guess she was the biggest name they could land on short notice and they desperately needed to swamp the story today.
I like Adams, but I also question her for this role. I guess we will see.
Amy Adams is perfect for Lois Lane. Olivia Wilde would have been a perfect choice to play Lois too. But, she probably isn’t crying about losing out to Amy considering Oliver Stone wants her as a hostage in newest movie Savage. By the way, Anne Hathaway is perfect for Catwoman. She’s played tough female chicks before. Remember Havoc?
Excellent choice. Amy is perfect for this. Couldn’t be happier.
Did you not see The Fighter?!? “Sarcastic, tough girl thing”?! Wow.
Needed something to take the attention off the train wreck that is Sucker Punch.
Amy is over exposed, she needs to take a break for awhile, kind of sick of her.
MILFtastic! I love it.
Is Zack Snyder going to make Superman a more character driven drama than his other movies? I certainly hope so.
While I love Amy Adams, she just doesn’t fit the part of Lois Lane no matter how one looks at it. While her age is not the problem, her looks are, and she simply doesn’t fit the Margot Kidder/Teri Hatcher model. Ever Erica Durance is a better fit than Amy, and I don’t suggest casting her in the film no matter how much I like her in Smallville.
This was simply a move to draw attention away from the disaster known as SUCKER PUNCH, nothing more, and portends a SUPERMAN movie fast going off the rails.
You say that she doesn’t fit the “Margot Kidder/Terri Hatcher model” as if that’s a bad thing.
Not sure about Hatcher, but I think Margot Kidder was the key to the success of the Richard Donner “Superman.” The casting of Lois Lane is more important than the casting of Superman himself. Because it’s Lane who has to have a strong personality, whereas Superman/Clark Kent is pretty cold and rigid. Bryan Singer’s “Superman” failed because they put very little thought into the writing/casting of Lane. She’s not just a romantic subplot. She IS the story. We have to care about Lois before we can care about Superman.
Teri Hatcher! Now that was a Lois I could get behind!
I like Amy Adams, but I can’t see her in this role. I’d have gone with Zooey Deschanel.
Warner Bros and Snyder just checked into the same rehab center as Charlie Sheen, right?! Who da thunk that a worse Lois Lane than Kate Bosworth could’ve been cast.
Actaully it’s great out of the box casting compared to the cookie cutter twenty something actress’ that were considered who aren’t good actress’.
Amy Adams blows them all away. The only other actress that would have maaaaaybe done better than Adams would have been Wilde or McAdams and that is a BIG MAYBE!
Snyder will do fine….since he is not writing the story or screenplay. That’s the Nolans and Goyers job.
I like Amy. She’ll probably be OK for Lois Lane.
No way for Janis Joplin.
Please!!
why not , she is an actress.
Joe,
You ask, “Why not, she is an actress”?
For the same reason Shia Labeouf is not playing Superman. Nor Matthew Perry. Nor Danny McBride. And I mean no disrespect to those actors.
Just because someone is an actor or actress doesn’t mean she or he is right for any/every role.
Why can some actors do comedy well and some not? Using your thinking all actors should be able to do comedy equally well. After all, they’re actors.
To be more specific: as much as I enjoy Amy Adams’ work she does not have the grit, the gravitas, no matter how deep she digs to play Janis Joplin. She was good in “The Fighter” but that’s nothing like playing Janis.
If you’ve never seen it, take a look at the movie “The Rose”, where Bette Midler played a fictionalized version of Janis. Amy is good but she’s no Bette (in this instance) and she’s surely no Janis.
I admire Amy for wanting to take on the challenge of the role but this would be the wrong choice by the people making the movie.
Lois Lane in underwear and slo-mo. Interesting.
She’s almost 10 years older than Henry Cavill! She’s gonna be a MILF-ey, cradle snatching Lois. Also, if there’s gonna be sequels, do we really want a Lois in her 40s? This is a crazy decision and it’s going to bury this film.
She can rob my cradle any time.
Margot Kidder looked a few years older than Christopher Reeve (not sure if she was in reality, or not). A slightly older, more experienced Lois will work fine, particularly with Amy Adams’s level of talent.
Cavill was good as “The Tudors” progressed. He played a wiseass rogue in the beginning, but took on more gravity well in his performance, as the character aged. His Supes will be fine. Hopefully he can play a dorky Clark too.
Margot Kidder was four years older than Christopher Reeve. Older woman/younger man works well for these characters. I don’t know why, it just does. Casting Bosworth (at 22?!) was a complete disaster, I still don’t know what they were thinking.
Amy is a great choice. Snyder makes me nervous, but at least we know there is a great cast!
Agreed – that was the very worst part of Superman Returns (a 22 year old chain smoking, pulitzer prize winning mom??!!!?!?!?!?!). It singlehandedly ruined the movie.
It seems the filmmakers aren’t thinking of the franchise…by the time a sequel rolls around, Amy will be 40 and that really is too old. (Unless they’re going to be having Lois’ character crankier than ever, due to perimenopause.)
Amy Adams was on Smallville very early on in her career. She played a freak of the week in a fat suit who slimmed down thanks to a meteor rock diet.
Not brunette enough.
The drapes doesn’t necessarily have to match the carpet. Unless they go for an R rating like Watchmen!
Oh don’t worry, I am sure they can take care of that with CGI! Special effects can do wonders! I mean there couldn’t possibly be an easier way to change someone’s hair color…right?
