2ND UPDATE: 20th Century Fox production VP John Fox is going to head production at Davis Entertainment, which last year extended its producing deal at Fox to 2014. Here’s the release:
LOS ANGELES (April 11, 2011) — Fox Filmed Entertainment today announced that John Fox will transition from his current position as vice president of production for Twentieth Century Fox to president of production at Davis Entertainment, where he will be responsible for all aspects of motion picture development and production.
The union will further the relationship between Davis Entertainment and Fox, who has overseen production on several of Davis’ films, including the upcoming Mr. Popper’s Penguins, based on the award-winning children’s book and starring Jim Carrey.
Fox joined Twentieth Century Fox in 2008 and since then has supervised production for several feature films, including hit comedies such as Date Night and The Tooth Fairy, as well as the upcoming films The Sitter, starring Johan Hill; Mr. Popper’s Penguins; and Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. Prior to Twentieth Century Fox, Fox held the position of vice president at Dreamworks Studios, overseeing such hits as Anchorman, Transformers, and Norbit.

John Fox is a great guy and strong exec. He will kill it.
Yes, there’s a whole population of incredibly talented execs at studios and prod companies who fly under the radar but keep the wheels turning. You should get to know some of them — they see a side of this business that even you don’t.
Exactly. It’s people like John Fox who keep this industry afloat while others are more concerned about tooting their horn, remodeling their offices and kissing the right asses. There are some people in this business who care deeply about the work that they do and not just making a name for themselves or golden parachutes.
John Fox is an excellent executive and he will be an incredible producer. John Davis is lucky to have him. He’ll be missed in the halls of Building 88…
In this town, the people with the low profile are usually the ones who make things happen.
the guy has the Jim Carrey movie coming out and the Cameron Crowe movie and he leaves for John Davis? This doesn’t smell right. Sounds like he was let go.
John did develop fantastic scripts for Tooth Fairy and Date Night.
You can like the guy, you can think he’s a good exec… but please don’t call The Tooth Fairy a “fantastic script”.
your post is a bummer. noone at any stage of those projects including greenlight ever said great script.
TF’s script was publicly slammed by its producers ciardi and gray, and even then barely bailed out on the last pass by Randi Singer (who Fox abandoned and sold out in arbitration) and that movie was a straight turd..concept/star driven ONLY.
date night…formula and tired. one of the least inspired scripts i read that year.
Who doesn’t know John Fox? He’s great.
oh boy he gets to work on Doctor Dolittle 3 and a remake of Grumpy Old Men with Kirk Douglas and Ernest Borgnine how exciting!!!!
John is an incredibly driven smart exec who has always been one of the hardest working people I’ve ever worked with. And he’s great with development (at a studio that isn’t) and constantly had his ideas watered down by the upper ranks. I wish him well at Davis.
With all the “strong” & “talented” execs..you’d think there would be better movies coming out…but alas it’s all about giving “good phone” and “good lunches” and good Meetings…which is the best way to pay for the mortgage and westside private schools for the kids.
John was at Dreamworks before Fox where he was the exec on huge hits like Tranformers. He got a lot done in a very short time at Fox and is a guy with integrity and a great work ethic.
John cares about his notes and has genuine passion. We were lucky to work with him and wish him well.
thats a douche-bag brush off if i ever heard one…say something that doesn’t sound like you have a publicist and that you separate business from pleasure when you go home.
also, could you change your name please…spell it with a y or something.
Fox was the most effective ex at Fox,who they going to replace him with?
Jon Fox was the Dreamworks exec behind Transformers? So what did Spielberg and Bay do? I heard Norbit was his “baby”
Dear George,
Studio movies have executives oversee development, production and post. That’s how this business works. Bay directed the film. Spielberg was the studio boss and an EP.
Love, Everyone
P.S. The film had a producer too! I know, crazy right?? Don’t even get me started on the studio CEs and Lorenzo’s development execs. Baby steps buddy.
What happened to Derek Dauchy??
I’m wondering the same thing… What’s happening to Derek Dauchy?
that’s exactly what I want to know. Dauchy and Ira Napolello are two of the best in the business. Not sure why john needs another hand on deck. But maybe it’ll bode well, maybe Davis is headed back to his old mega-producer days and will be releasing more movies.
Many Fox feature executives lose their creative identity in that machine for reasons that are rather obvious. I would argue that there are executives who were or have been there longer who have accomplished less. I applaud John for accomplishing as much as he did and getting out while the getting is good.
Second that RE: Dauchy – he’s a great exec, loved working with him. Hope he’s not getting the short end of the stick…
John’s a good guy, but let’s get the facts right. He was canned. You don’t make a downward move like that on purpose.
Great, now there is no one that does feature comedy at Fox.
you mean the genius being the epic comedies Marmaduke, Tooth Fairy and Norbit? Gosh, how will they ever survive? Sounds like addition by subtraction at the studio.
Disagree. Crevello or Puri could easily take those reins.
Puri has the red dot on his forehead already. Wouldn’t place my money on that one surviving much longer.
Heard this applies to basically everyone at the VP level except Drew.
John sold his condo in Brentwood a couple of months ago. Could this be a sign of distress with his job placement?
