OK, so he only recently became president and chief executive of Comcast’s NBCUniversal, but still, Steve Burke and his boss Brian Roberts have joined the likes of Time Warner’s Jeffrey Bewkes, Disney’s Bob Iger and Viacom’s Philippe Dauman on the list of big-media leaders who got big bumps in 2010 despite the post-recession economy. According to a regulatory filing today with the SEC, Comcast said Burke received compensation of $34.7M last year, a 5% raise compared with 2009 and a bigger total than Comcast chairman and CEO Roberts, who made $31.1M, a 14% raise. Earlier this week, Bewkes got a 34% lift.

Really? Why does ONE person need to make $34 million a YEAR while tons of people making a tiny fraction thereof are getting laid off every year because “there’s no money to pay for them”? I guess we now know where all that money goes. Makes me sick to my stomach.
oh blah blahblah blahblah blahblah….I can’t wait until the day I make $34million in a year. Quit complaining and work for it.
i’m pretty sure you are joking, but if you aren’t, FYI you are freaking fooling yourself if you think you will ever make that kind of money.
Thanks for the advice, but I’m fairly certain that someone like me who is willing to put in the time and sweat equity, has a far better chance of hitting the CEO-level of salary versus people who bitch and complain on message boards. Shut up, stop hating and do the work…..maybe you’ll surprise yourself and make $30million one year (and you can give it all away to people who “deserve” it).
Given that you felt the need to respond like this, it’s pretty safe to assume that that’ll be like waiting for the Messiah. Enjoy that.
Usually I’m all “yea! go capitalism!” But lately, things like these CEOs, CFOs, etc (of any industry/company) getting multi-million dollar salaries just has me disgusted. And not just because of the recession. Companies blowing through cash like this is one of the reasons there are so many layoffs of the “little guys”.
Over $34M last year? Have we truly forgotten how much money just ONE million dollars is? (And don’t tell me some of it is in stock options so it’s not the same thing. Yes, it’s the same thing – profit is profit.) What single person needs 35 million dollars a year? WTF? How many cars can you drive? How many new $5K suits can you wear? How many homes can you furnish and live in? How many politicians do you need in your pocket?
Thank you, Gordon Gekko. Fuck greed.
this is what’s wrong with the youth of our society. teachers, parents, etc have blown smoke up your a** all these years plus society has this idea that “i too can make it, so don’t tax the wealthy more and big deal that he makes 34.5 million, i so too will”. the wealthy implant the idea that you can too be rich if you work hard just so you leave them alone, and they’ve said this in the open. read a book
When I was a kid I also learned about defeatism. Looks like you’re simply living it. Sad.
But I’ll bet Comcast and all the other studio congloms still cry poverty when it comes to YOUR deal…
Or residuals.
Or Health and Pension contributions.
Or employment.
We live in America people, stop hating and being jealous of other people’s success. Save that energy and use it for something productive and maybe you too can be making 34 million a year. Start a company, invent something, Get your hands dirty. Not smart enough or Savy enough to run your own? Partner with someone who is! Don’t know where to start? Ask someone who does! Have zero people skills? Its ok most things are done by email now anyways, you can fake it lol. If not, send someone inn your place that has a personality. But save the whining , no one like negativity and it won’t put money in your bank account.
True. Coz it’s all in theirs.
This isn’t “success” pal, this is excess. Who wouldn’t be happy working in this industry making $2M/year? Remember, this is not something Burke invented; not something he got his own hands dirty doing; not a company he started; not anything you’re suggesting “we hating, whining” little people do.
During union contract negotiations, the studios all cry “poor” and refuse to pay creatives their due; nickel-and-dimeing them while people like this get stupid sums of money to continue failing upwards. If the studios took only $2M per film and spread it over the writers and actors (and crew, where applicable), there would be a calming in the industry unheard of since before DVDs came on the market.
How simple, progressive and productive that would be.
That’s great. The inside track on this from what I understand is when corporate learned they could spend less, save more and pad their own pocket by trimming staff and crew on productions following the writers strike and economic burn-out. Do they still get the same product? Yes.
TV is not dead. It’s just thinner in the ranks. A starving cow while these suits suck up the last drop of milk and spare nothing for the creatives. They’re nothing more than poachers, pimps and greedy little deviants who’d fuck their mother to get a bump. Ass cancer has more compassion and virtue.
Bitter? Fuck right I am. And so should you be.
No problem with people earning money, but I do have a problem with these no talent lackeys getting paid like entrepreneurs when they’re not. They fill their board with their friends, who are spineless and give out these huge payouts. Corporate governance in America is a joke.
Congrats to those gentlemen!
I’m relieved to know the money they haven’t been paying their un-unionized Hollywood writers went to good homes.
Steve Burke and Brian Roberts must be writing their thank you cards to Congress right now. Henry Waxman, yours is on the way. Thanks for letting down the people you represent. Thanks for pushing the merger through so these guys can continue to underpay workers right in your district. You really have your finger on the pulse of Steve and Brian. Hopefully, the WGA and it’s membership will sac up if Brian and Steve haven’t acquired all their balls yet.
between his time at disney and comcast, burke created or marketed ideas that made millions in profits for his companies, because consumers liked them. Same with roberts…isn’t that what it’s all about ? nobody’s holding a gun on anyone to subscribe to comcast or watch nbc. there are lots of other choices. plus, they both have reps as stand-up guys in a business with too few of them. isn’t it better they get the big dough than an athlete whose job is to throw a ball well once a week ? think they’re not worth it…watch what NBC does within 2 years.
Roberts and Burke care nothing about their employees, or fellow human beings, for that matter. They are the destroyers of all things good, and all they care about is WINNING. Trust me – they coined that word long before Charlie Sheen. In fact, I’ve heard them say it numerous times. The Comcast/NBCU merger violates every antitrust law in the book. Most people don’t realize the power that was entrusted to these two assholes. Not only are they the world’s largest cable TV and internet provider, but they now own a massive chunk of the content. They could put DirecTV and Dish out of business tomorrow, if they so choose. But for now, they’re playing nice. At least, for now
People should be absolutely livid by what’s going on with these big corporations and the politicians. They’re out’ve of control. When Brian Roberts gets a 14% raise, and the rest of the company gets a standard 3% while being told, “sorry, but we’re in a recession” … well, that’s just fucked up.
And by the way, Brian Roberts inherited Comcast from daddy. What does he know about hard work? I’m just saying …
