Adult Swim has picked up animated series Black Dynamite for a spring 2012 debut. Based on the 2009 feature, Black Dynamite further chronicles the exploits of the central character, ex-CIA agent and full-time ladies man Black Dynamite, and his crew as they avenge the death of Black Dynamite’s brother against kung-fu masters, drug-dealing pimps and The Man and his crew. Spearheaded by Carl Jones (The Boondocks), the series features the voices of Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley and Byron Minns, all of whom starred in the feature. Black Dynamite, animated by Titmouse, is produced by Ars Nova Entertainment. Jones, Jon Steingart and Jillian Apfelbaum executive produce. Brian Ash is co-executive producer. Scott Sanders, Michael Jai White and Byron Minns are producers.

This is destined to be the greatest cartoon ever made as the film is the greatest film ever made.
Black Dynamite bears a distinct resemblance to a DC Comics character from the 1970′s called Black Lightning.
Or Shaft.
Or Obama
Right because…. They all look the same, right? Shouldn’t you be defending your boy Beck on the forum about him being pushed out of his show?
…uh…hush up, little girls. Lots of cats look like that.
Or something.
This had to be one of the funniest comedies I saw in 2010 so I’m happy to see it gaining recognition. I had no idea Michael Jai White could be such a brilliant comedic actor. I only worry that the style of the film won’t translate to animation. Half of what made Black Dynamite hilarious was the intentionally terrible production values. Perhaps if the series is successful a proper sequel will get the green light.
+1 on this. What made the movie were things like the boom mike, the stand-in-stunt-double, people reading the cue cards (“The militant turns, startled”), etc. Hard to see how it could compare – but hey, at least it’s Adult Swim trying it.
I seen the pilot for this at an Meltdown Comics in LA with Sanders, White and Minns as well as Ash. It wass abso-fucking-lutely BRILLIANT! I have not laughed this hard at a cartoon in a long time…maybe since Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies. If the idea of a Kermit the Frog and Sesame Street characters gone rogue seems like a funny idea to you, definitely check it out. As for the buffoonery, I would have to say it didn’t exhibit any of that. The creators are very sure of themselves. As a matter of fact, White, Minns and Sanders are somewhat “Black nerds” when it comes to our culture. They are quite gifted at taking a message and really doing it in a just way. Though I think its different from McGruder’s satire-style from The Boondocks, you will appreciate its contribution as the Black cartoon genre grows.
I absolutely loved this movie. Everything about it down to the obvious 70’s like missteps (seeing the mic and the same car over the cliff scene) was right on point. You can push the boundaries with cartoons I’m sure it’s going to risky and fun.
WOW what a Great Movie and i have to collect all the animated series.
Saw some of this in NYC last year, its hilarious.
The film is highly overrated. A spoof without the moral message or zingers compared to similar movies in the past. No surprise by hollywood seeing another pimps, hoes and drugs movie featuring black folks.
I am usually on the lookout for coonism (for example, I’m not a fan of “The Boondocks”) but somehow didn’t see it in Black Dynamite. It had a sense of humor without being denigrating. And if you saw flicks like “Bucktown” or “Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off” those were kinda short on moral messages too. Judging from the still above the animation style looks cool. As long as they keep to the 70s vibe and don’t devolve into hip-hop minstrelsy, I’m down.
And LOL @ “Ron Mexico”
im white and i loved it. i also like 90′s rap, berry gordy’s last dragon and have jerome benton in my cell phone. i bought shaq’s first album, grew up in oakland/berkeley, watch the wire and think michael jackson was a child molester first and an artist second. i also think the only thing i support about your post is your name…Ron Mexico…that;s a funny name. but going the hollywood and pimps hoes bit seems absurd here when you look at the filmakers and the $ behind this movie…you turded out on this one mexico and gave a crappy stock answer and also used the word zingers. i disagree with you.
Congrats Jillian Apfelbaum and everyone at ARS NOVA!!
I liked the movie quite a bit, but there’s a part of me that thinks an Adult Swim cartoon could be even better. Totally echo the ‘who knew Michael Jai White was so impossibly funny’ comment.
This is going to be great.
Like the name “Titmouse”.
Everyone here should see THICK as THIEVES. sanders dir (and co wrote it) just like BD it’s got Alec baldwin as the lead and Ars Nova produced. It’s brilliant, trust me. Michael Jai white is the “bad guy” and is hilarious.
Whether they put their ankles in it or not I’m sure this’ll be good!
Looking forward to this but I’m also hesitant to believe this series will have legs.
I laughed my arse off during the movie. And adult swim is a late night, just blazed, eating munchies, choking on doritos epicness that I personally enjoy more than masturbation. I too fear that a cartoon spin off won’t capture the low budget, cheesy feel that the movie held. Guess time will only tell.
Amen to that.
when are we going to see more new episodes?
Was Adult swim smart enough to funs anohter season.
I hope so as AS and BD were made for each other
