EXCLUSIVE: At the end of last week’s episode of CBS’ The Good Wife, which culminated with Peter Florrick’s victory in the District Attorney election, DCC chairman Frank Landau revealed that he’s already plotting Peter’s campaign for Senate, and that Florrick’s trusted strategist Eli Gold will be running that, too. Well, that could now become a reality because, after several weeks of negotiations, Alan Cumming, who plays Gold on the show, has signed a deal to continue as a regular for three more seasons. The Good Wife is yet to be renewed for Season 3 but, given the acclaim for the show, that is considered a done deal.
Cumming joined The Good Wife as a recurring in the first season and was upped to a regular for the current second season. Cumming’s character of cutthroat political operative Eli Gold, which some have suggested resembles former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, was an immediate standout when he was first introduced in Episode 15 last season. CAA-repped Cumming earned a guest-starring Emmy nomination last year and is a strong contender for a supporting drama actor nom this year. Going back to the most recent pivotal episode of The Good Wife, in which Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) wowed Gold with her TV interview that essentially won the election for her husband, yes, Gold will be back next season, but which Florrick he would be running a campaign for is TBD.

Why Hollywood and the production companies that create content for Television, Why they haven’t gone to England and raided the comedians for more shows here in the USA, well it’s beyond me.
Mr. Cumming is just another in a long line of talent that we finally get here in the US that drive USA produced entertainment.
Oh wait, our version of a Shakespeare festival is the many vampire shows our studios produce.
Great show and he is great on it.
It’s a great character played by a great actor on one of the best shows on TV. It’s nice to see that they appreciate his contribution.
Great role, and he’s amazing! Way to go TGW team – excellent move! Even more excited for season 3 now!
Echoing previous sentiments. He’s a standout on an already fantastic series.
Don’t watch the show but happy to hear such an interesting actor is going to be able to collect a nice big paycheck for another 3 years.
So while I’m excited because this is the absolute best show on TV right now, I’m also admittedly a little bit spooked. I went back through the site to find out more about other contract renewals. Nikki: Is the rest of this fabulous cast locked up??
He’s a great actor. He should audition for the role of President Snow in The Hunger Games. Alan is talented enough to pull off the creepy evil aspect of that character, and it would expose him to a wide audience.
That’s a great casting idea- he’d make a wonderful President Snow.
I love Alan Cumming on ‘The Good Wife.’ The cast is excellent across the board, but Eli Gold is a special treasure and I think his relationship with Alicia is heading in some really interesting places. You could just see him falling in love with her potential during the last episode…I was so excited that they’ve invented a Senate campaign to keep him on the show!
Eli is the best male character on the show. This has to be good news in re: the show being picked up. (and @JR, Great casting idea!)
Not a fan of The Good Wife but love Alan Cumming.
I do not think that he resembles Rahmbo. Fortunately.
It is great to hear the studio seems to have longterm plans for this excellent show, hopefully the renewal will happen despite the ratings…by the way, I REALLY don’t get why people don’t watch this…meanwhile Jersey Shore and co. are thriving.
One of my favorite characters on a great show. So very happy to hear this.
I have been a fan of Mr. Cumming for years. Loved his turn as “Glitch” in “Tin Man”…..
Ick. The political part of that show is boring. And what’s up with that last name?
Ick is right. He is a totally creepy. And please – the bedroom scene was totally off. There is no way I think this guy is some sexy person. Get real and get someone who is more interesting and believable in this role.
Agree with all the comments about Alan Cumming – a terrific actor in a well-written part. I especially liked what the writers did with his and America Ferrara’s characters. Two smart people of different generations attracted to each other and managing to control their feelings (so far) in appreciation of all the complications. Fine work from everybody here. Ferrara, by the way, is another gem they should figure out how to keep on the show as a recurring.
That is the best news. He really lights up the screen when he is on and his eyes are so expressive. He is just so perfect and am so happy he is recognized. I especially love his daughter when she said…I’m so going to birthright!
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! Man I love this show.
